(CNS): A prison officer has been suspended from his job in the early stages of an investigation into the discovery of a covert camera and audio equipment in a senior manager’s office at the  prison. In a short release, prison officials said that the camera was discovered last Thursday in the office at the men’s prison, HMP Northward, and the police have opened an investigation. Prison Director Neil Lavis confirmed that the camera was not authorized by his office.

“It is regrettable that someone has seen fit to invade another person’s privacy in such a manner.  I am committed to uncovering the parties involved,” Lavis said. Prison officials said that while the investigation was underway, further details were being withheld but alongside the police probe, an internal enquiry has also been opened.

CNS has learned that the covert camera may have been installed at the request of another senior member of staff. Lavis stated that it had not been authorized by him and that all allegations regarding the involvement of other staff were being investigated.

The prison boss also confirmed that there had been no formal internal investigation underway at the prison into allegations of possible misconduct by a member of the prison management team in relation to improper relationships with inmates. However, the prison officer who has been suspended is understood to have claimed that the CCTV was installed on the orders of a member of the prison management team as a result of an internal probe relating to those allegations.

There is too much drama and 4 play for me in this lickle Place bwoy.

interesting story! my first instinct is why would someone go through all that trouble? it sounds like clearly some sections of management does not have the boss’ support why they seemingly had to resort to this??? my question for the top man is,… in addition to getting to the bottom of the “illegal” camera , what about allegations of the managers’ alleged behaviour? May have been an unconventional way of getting things done, but our forefathers did not achieve much by being passive.

No surprise! There exists a certain vile underbelly within the public sevice where unauthorized surveillence has been going on for years and still does. It is facilitated by certain persons who have the technical capabilities & equipment and who operate with impunity because (A) persons do not generally expect to be “spied upon”, (B) there are no measures to oversee these cowboys, and (C) they are connected to a certain “brotherhood” which has high-reaching connections and are thus “untouchable” (or think they are).

Mr. Lavis himself better check his own office and especially his phone. These cowboys have been known to enable “open-mic” desk phones – not to mention cell phone surveillence.

How many times must serious issues arise at HMP Northward and elsewhere within the responsibility of the Ministry of Home Affairs without the Chief Officer of that Ministry being held accountable??!!

This is a blatant case of the foolishness that goes on in that place, I am hearing an officer actuall hid the camera in the air duct of a senior manager and he watched her from his office????? I’m told he was told to do it by his manager???????????
Yes it’s a prison but there are such things as things as privacy laws yes,

Both of the staff involved need to be severely deal with, I hope mr Lavis does the right thing as he is doing a great job in there I know,

I hope the police prosecute them both,

Camera is a good idea if someone on the inside is allowing contraband to enter the system. There shouldn’t be any reasonable assumption of privacy in a secure facility – if that’s what we’re really going for. Put cameras everywhere!
