(CNS): A raccoon that was apparently trapped in a shipping container from the United States and delivered to Foster’s Republix Friday morning is on the run in the district and people are warned to stay clear of the animal as government officials try to catch it. The wild animal was one of two racoons that appear to have stowed away in the container but escaped when it was opened at the supermarket earlier today. One was caught immediately but the second remains on the loose, and officials warn that the animal could be dangerous to both people and pets.

“It may be tempting to try and pet a wild animal but we are warning the public not to do so as the raccoon could be carrying diseases such as rabies, and are known to be aggressive,” a representative from the Department of Agriculture stated. “Raccoons are nocturnal are attracted to food waste and garbage. Residents in the area are asked to report any sightings… to the Department of Agriculture Veterinary Services.”

Because the animals were eating food in the container during the journey from the US, the rest has all been thrown away.

The DoA is working in conjunction with Department of Environment and Department of Environmental Health to capture the animal.

Anyone who sees the racoon can call the DoA Veterinary Services at

Ricky for premier (he already has a mask, and less likely to be swayed by special interests).

Vaccinate them and send them to the parrot sanctuary!
Half the animals in there were caught out the bush anyway… 🤣

  5. Anonymous says:

Warning!!! These are foreigners and expats raccoons and as such they need to be quarantined and vaccinated otherwise incarcerated and deported, just saying.

  6. Anonymous says:

Unfortunately the raccoon will probably die of dehydration before it’s caught. Poor little chap.

  7. Anonymous says:

Did they catch the raccoon yet?

  8. Anonymous says:

I do hope that neither will be euthanised.

  9. HeyRickyYou'reSoFine says:

People calm down. It is unlikely that Ricky Raccoon has rabies and he isn’t going to attack dogs, cats or kids. Right about now I’m guessing Ricky Raccoon is wishing he had never left the USA. Hey Ricky you’re so fine…

He’s free, just like the monkey back in the day living in East end, let him/her/it chill and enjoy Cayman kind!
Surely all unna should be worried about C19 not some racoon chilling catching a tan! 😂🤣😂🤣

I want the little guy to truly experience Caymanian culture. I’ll start by leaving out the national dish on the porch tonight for him…KFC!

Send it to Little to deal with the cats.

They aren’t predators and won’t be harmful to anything but the trash that litters the island. They love garbage.

Raccoons do eat other animals such as birds, reptiles, crustaceans, amphibians and fish. They also eat eggs. And they will love your food garden.

Fear monger. Millions of people coexist with raccoons with no issues, just like we coexist with sharks

          • Anonymous says:

Of course people can coexist with racoons – in places where racoons are native. I’m in Belgium and in the last few years we have been invaded by racoons that spread westward across Europe after escaping zoos in Eastern Germany. They are causing significant problems for local wildlife

The DOE helping catch it. Oh please don’t make me laugh, that would mean dropping their private work to accommodate government.

3:38 Ohhhh someones is a bit bitter… what happened, buddy!? Did you get caught poaching or something!?

No just need to stand and watch the doe truck come into ALT’s one especially almost on a daily basis. I met our ‘local’ officer once, meant to be responsible for my area, but hey, when he was needed he was unavailable. An hour later I saw him the other side of the island unloading supplies from his gov truck into a private home that I know is not his own.
Two days later in uniform he was at the same property appearing to fix a private boat.
So no bitterness, just concern that certain people are taking govt money and not doing their job and lazy managers don’t stop them.
        Why, are you a customer?

Not a problem , plenty off guns in west bay!!!

Let’s hope it’s not got rabies

  21. Meeko says:

    Was it vaccinated?

  22. Anonymous says:

Hopefully it eats a few hundred chickens before its caught

    • Anonymous says:

Unlikely. While it’s not unheard of for raccoons to kill and eat cats and chickens, it isn’t common for them. They’re usually far more fond of dumpster diving when around human populations.

Just more bandits coming toCayman. Already masked up.

    • Anonymous says:

A cuddlier villain that poses much less risk than the wealthy developing every damn piece of land they can

    • Anonymous says:

There are already plenty of masked up bandits born everyday in Cayman. This little guy is a kitten compared to what they will become.

  24. Anonymous says:

    Bring in the regiment!

  25. Anonymous says:

People are stupid. These things carry rabies and they’re very destructive. We have been a rabies free country. Can you imagine a rabid pack of wild dogs? This can get out of hand very quickly.

  26. Anonymous says:

Dispatch the Iguana Cullers to kill it

I love how when anything a little unexpected happens in Cayman Chicken Little comes out to play. “The sky is falling, the sky is falling!”
It’s a raccoon folks, not a boat load of dutty foreigners, everything will be fine.

  28. Mg says:

I hope they caught the female.

  29. Anonymous says:

They are going to love it here!

  30. Elf says:

“Does someone need a hug….. I just wanted a hug”.

  31. Anonymous says:

Please report sightings! God forbid this is a pregnant female and we have to deal with another disease-bearing pest on top of the iguanas! A raccoon with rabies may attack your pet or child .. we have to trap it ASAP!

    • Anonymous says:

Don’t follow this panicked advice. Plenty of people worldwide coexist with raccoons with no issues. Worry more about the maniacal drivers than an innocent animal

    • Anonymous says:

Well one week alone in a shipping container … if the container is a rockin don’t come a knockin

    • Anonymous says:

      Panic mode, again!

      • Anonymous says:

Raccoons running free.. I gotta go buy up all the toilet paper Fosters has.

        • Anonymous says:

But not WB Fosters. You might run into the raccoon. Go to the grocery stores further away. Quickly, before the panic spreads to those districts. 🙂

  32. Anonymous says:

Oh good Lord, now we’re importing more pests from America!!

Our luck, the single one which escaped was a pregnant female!!
