Red Bay latest school to catch COVID
(CNS): Another eight students tested positive for COVID-19 Wednesday, including the first from Red Bay Primary. The rest of the cases were students at John Gray and Clifton Hunter high schools. Another adult in the community also tested positive but public health officials did not say what connection, if any, this adult had to the current cases. Just one traveller due to leave quarantine was also positive among the batch of 772 results revealed today.
The total number of active cases remains steady at 128, with 60 people showing symptoms of COVID-19. With the exception of the patient who tested positive for the virus almost a month ago when she was admitted to hospital for other health reasons, there are no COVID patients in the hospital.
The total number of cases to date in the Cayman Islands since March 2020 is 930.
Government has still not released the number of people in isolation, and while the quarantine period for close contacts who are fully vaccinated is being cut to ten days with a negative test on exit, there are still dozens of households in isolation in connection with the cases across at least ten schools, as well as and those who had been on board a pleasure boat where one man tested positive after a screen test ahead of travel.
But the impending arrival of rapid test kits may reduce the need for close contacts, especially class mates of positive children and their families, to isolate if they are able to test regularly and remain negative.
Meanwhile, just 57 people got their first shot over the last day, as the surge to get vaccinated has waned recently. Since the beginning of October only 233 people have come forward for their first shot, even though the number of active cases jumped from 68 to 128 over the same period.
According to the latest vaccination numbers, 55,433 people, or 78% of the population, has had had at least one dose while 52,632, or 74%, have had two. So far 166 vulnerable people have had a booster shot.

My kids are all out of school. But…if they were still school aged there is zero chance I would send them for in person learning. Our Government is crazy overreacting, and actively trying to destroy this country’s economy as well as hurt our youth. What are they thinking?! This is truly dystopian.

a) people realise that getting vaccinated will make no difference to whether you get quarantined by the government or not
b) people realise that no one is dying, and think that there is no risk to them with the border still shut

We are luckier than other places so far because of our high vax rate but this is not to say if Delta met up on a unvax with respiratory and/or other issues that they cannot die.

We have gone from open the borders to open the schools. Next stop, reopen the workplaces that have ground to a halt because you have quarantined parents, or decide to extend the 14 day quarantine to all office colleagues of a positive case. At this rate the entire population will be in quarantine, rendering quarantine of travellers pointless!

Quarantine of travelers has been pointless the moment community spread occurred. Travelers arriving with negative tests within 48-72 hours prior must be considered equally as safe to be around then the untested community.

Yes – a year ago when there were not vaccines or therapeutic, so when covid made far more people seriously ill.
Oh, and 30% of the people who did not in fact have covid reported the same symptoms. “Feeling tired” is reported for most GP appointments. And the fat and old experience breathlessness, mainly because they are fat and old.
Long covid, properly identified, seems to account for a low single figure percentage of cases long term and that percentage will fall dramatically in the post-vaccine period.

In the news this morning:

But we are tied to the UK, so we have to wait for UK approval and production and shipment.
These arent the same vials as the does is 1/3 the adult dose, so cant simply use the current vials (even though the actual vaccine is the same, there is a safety limit to how many injections can safely be extracted from a vial. Too many extractions risks contamination of the vial).
We started 12-18 years old waaaay before the U.K. decided to do that age group. Seems this government cherry picking advice (from a hat?).
Actually we ignored the UK on the 12-15 year old approval so fully expect to ignore them again…

If you read the news from Bermuda you will note that, sadly, the majority of people in hospital and the majority of people who die from COVID-19 are unvaccinated. You may also note that while children under 18 have been diagnosed with COVID-19, to date (the date of the article) no children had been admitted to hospital or had died. This is why we have to continue our vaccination drive.
Kim Wilson, Bermuda Minister of Health, said this week that over 90% of the hospitalization from COVID since January (when the vaccine was first available) were in people who were unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated.
For those following Bermuda, remember that they have a large anti-vax community, and held multiple large protests over the summer.
Fortunately the vax rate is starting to surge again in the recent month in Bermuda, at it looks like cases have peaked and are coming down.

I am vaxxed and so is everyone in my extended family. It is much better to be vaxxed but sadly, and our government cannot lose sight of this, 19% of those dying of Covid in Bermuda were fully vaxxed according to their Minister of Health’s statement at this link.

Somebody needs to identify and explain the link between all the schools being the centers of spread. Where are all the kids mixing with each other to catch it and how many parents have it who are not coming forward ?
Interesting how The Governor was pushing not to close the schools despite the break-out…. Bad move with hindsight.
But school children ( and irresponsible parents) always likely to be the big centre of spread- as has been the case in many countries.
I am guessing, and VERY strongly suspect, adults who might have mild symptoms are not coming forward for testing, as this would require an immediate 14-day lockdown at home for the adult and any co-inhabitants and family members.
Why would I agree to be tested by someone who is not required to be vaccinated?
Lots of children are now acquiring natural immunity….and doing fine. This just isnt a fearsome pathogen for children (other pathogens are, malaria for example, but not SARs-COV-2. It just isnt).
And they are being infected with the latest variant, whereas the existing vaccine was formulated for the initial wild Wuhan strain. So ironically, natural infection will confer them with greater protection going forward in the next few years.
The explanation is easy. A large group of people in a small enclosed area. This is why cities in the UK and the US have had problems since the pandemic began. You see what happens in a small little island- think of how it can multiply on a subway/metro system where thousands of people are packed in every day. That is why it is so important to wear masks when you can not social distance.Get vaccinated to protect you and those around you who are most vulnerable.

Ask the more reason to start administering the boosters to those who got the vaccine in January and February (7-8 months ago by now, antibodies have fallen a lot since then).

This is very easy to understand – unless you’re dumb.
It would be interesting to know on-going statistics on infections. Vaxxed vs Unvaxxed. Symptomatic vaxxed vs symptomatic unvaxxed.
Infections will be more in the vaccinated population as most of the population is vaccinated. The majority of hospitalizations and deaths (which is the real issue) will be among the unvaccinated even though they are the minority. This is how it is in any country with high vaccine rates like Cayman.
A simple rate calculation will clarify.

The children are not vaccinated so how can we move forward?
My children are vaccinated. According to Government’s own statistics, so are pretty much every high school student in Cayman. So we closed the schools why again?
I doubt that every high school student in Cayman is vaccinated when the parents won’t even vaccinate.
Easy. Adults get vaccinated. Wear masks when you can’t social distance.
We need boosters. The science is increasingly clear. When will they be freely available?
