Fire in the Bay Islands (from social media)

(CNS) Around 2,000 people on the cay of Bonacca in the Bay Islands, Honduras, have been affected by a devastating fire that tore through the area on Saturday morning destroying over 200 homes and buildings. The Cayman Islands has close historical ties to the area and Premier Wayne Panton has offered support as the community attempts to rebuild. A Cayman Airways cargo flight to the area is being organised to transport supplies and donations that people began collecting over the weekend.

“Caymanians maintain close kinship and strong cultural links with the Bay Islands as many Bay Islanders and Caymanians share a common heritage and multiple family ties. Many of our friends and relatives in Bonacca have watched as fire destroyed their homes and earthly possessions,” the premier said.

Offering his heartfelt sympathies to all those impacted, he said that the Cayman Islands was ready to offer assistance.

“As the Cayman Islands community is known to do, it has sprung into action via churches, service clubs, businesses and individuals to collect aid for those affected,” Panton said. “On behalf of the government, I pledge to assist the people of Bonacca and one of our first steps will be to organise a cargo flight by Cayman Airways to transport supplies and donations collected for the people of Bonacca to Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport in Roatan.”

Further details are expected in connection with the flight.

The Premiere needs to offer assistance to Grand Cayman by opening this economy.

8:26 pm, can’t you think what will happen if the borders are opened without any quartanine. Just think about whats happening now with the c-virus and what will happen if its full open . If another lock down is necessary, that impact would be a lot of business folding up with lots of more people out of jobs. Think man think, thank you and God Bless.

The Saab 340 Regional cannot land safely into the only airport on the Main Island of Bonnacca/Guanaja. Most European manufactured regional turboprops besides the ATR family were not designed for short field and landing operations (STOL), especially at MTOW/MLW. The thinking was most countries in the EU are very close and passengers pack lightly or travel for business between cities. Much different from the average traveler in the western world. Think about why Cayman Airways cannot use the Saab 340 on the Little Cayman Route. They lack leading edge slats, rudder modifications, or any other equipment to aid in STOL operations. They can however get into Roatan International (MHRO.)

The DH-6 Twin otter would be able to safely land and take off in Utila, Roatan, and Guanaja. Albeit carrying less payload than the Saab 340 or the Boeing 737 Max would be able to. But in this circumstance, some relief is better than none.

05/10 @ 10:38pm – Your tech info from Jane’s is refreshing to a retired aviation professional and serves to clarify anyone’s curiousity as to why CAL cant send the Saab 340 to Guanaja.

But it also explains why the Government of the day made a horrible mistake (per ex-Minister of Aviation Kirkconnell) and a waste of taxpayers money to buy the Saabs in the fist place instead of the most suitable aircraft – the ATR 42 / 72 family!

The Saabs were bought just to placate Brackers desire for a restroom on board – nevermind that they were totally a waste for our inter-island routes because of exactly what you described! Yet, Cayman taxpayers continue to pay for these unsuitable aircraft and NEVER question careless, wasteful and stupid Government spending!!

We Brackers dont like the Saab planes and know they are not the right ones for the run, But Policiations rules, they made the decision.

Everyone in Cayman can get a job and work if they really want to work, not saying that they can get a job that they want,BUT THEY CAN GET A JOB, any job is better than none, better than going to NAU/social services and becoming a begger. Have pride and take any job until the right one is available, grab it and work hard with good work ethics and move up the ladder.

Yes the Government give the people a lot, it seems to a point of encouraging laziness that some don’t want to work again.

I wonder if the C A L Saab plane could fly into Guanaja Airport. As everyone know from there thats only a few minutes boat ride out to Bonacca .

  11. Bonacca Pirate Booty says:

Oh for crying out loud..this government has and continues to give to those in need…and in fact to some “not” so in need.

      Get past your negativity please!

Judging by the queue at KFC every night, there’s not much starving going on. Malnutrition yes, starvation no.

    • Anonymous says:

No one here should be starving. If you are legal here & Caymanian go to NAU. Otherwise contact ARK.
