(CNS): A 63-year-old man has been killed in the sixth fatal collision in the Cayman Islands so far this year. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital this morning after he was freed from the minivan he was driving by fire crews following a collision with a dump truck in Bodden Town. The crash happened at around 11:20am today, Tuesday 20 July, on Bodden Town Road, close to Governor Russell Beach. The man was driving a silver Toyota Noah heading east when he collided with the dump truck, which was travelling west. Police said the truck driver was uninjured and they are now appealing for witnesses to the collision.

The matter is currently under investigation by the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the TRPU at 649-6254.

The only vehicles that need to be fitted with tacho’s are all these POS Honda Accords.

  2. Anonymous says:

I think it’s a bit premature to be blaming the dump truck, especially as it appears to be in the correct lane and the car not. Most of the world complains about trucks holding them up, only in Cayman we complain they are too fast!

    • SSM345 says:

A fully loaded dump truck would stay in the “right lane” regardless after a collision with a mini-van.

      That truck nah going nowhere.

      • Anonymous says:

Obviously! The truck is in the correct lane after the collision, it most likely was in it before, which means the van likely wasn’t in the correct lane. That’s the point.

    • Anonymous says:

He wasn’t in the wrong. The man driving the bus was not supposed to be driving as he suffers from seizures. Sad all around

Time to install Tachographs in these trucks.
Also I have never seen the police or DVDL with a scale as one of these packed to the hilt with marl is bound to be overweight.

    • Law Abiding Citizen. says:

oh no, I see another police operation coming…. how are they going to manage?

    • GT East says:

Time to have the name of the haulage company on the trucks with telephone number etc just so we know who is operating these Trucks .these are imported here because they are not road worthy in the USA and can be bought at auction for nothing ..also most have greedy boards so they can be over loaded ..this may well have been a tragic no fault of the Truck driver but daily there are so many near misses .surely we must be close to full cctv set up at major intersections

  4. Caymanian says:

Not saying this is the truck drivers fault here but trucking needs more traffic regulations. I see trucks with full loads doing 40-45mph going traffic like they in a sports car. That a lot of inertia in those trucks and they simply cannot stop fast.

Personally the best option is a truck lane but outside of that make then travel a max of 5 mph under speed limits.

I also believe there should be some “stalking” of truckers going on to find problem drivers.

    • SSM345 says:

Check the videos of the game they play going around roundabout on 3 wheels purposely.

Yes its unbelievable, but is a thing for TikTok or Trucker’s FB Group or whatever the F they call themselves.

Condolences to the family of the deceased.

  6. BT Resident says:

Maybe we should wait and hear the full facts of what occurred.
Instead it seems that a lot of commenters are on a bloody rant about dump truck drivers, insinuating it was his fault.

From other reports, it is being said the man who died, suffered a seizure and ran into the dump truck.

    • Anonymous says:

Notably, the dump truck is in the correct lane.

    • Anonymous says:

9:28an, I fully agree with you! As much as I’ve had to row about dump trucks doing dangerous things, this specific accident seems to have been caused by the driver of the minivan….. based on the pictures of accident scene.

Also, rumor has it that the driver was known to suffer seizures and was not even supposed to drive. I feel sad for his family and wish them peace and comfort.

    • Anonymous says:

Thank you and you have the story straight. The dump truck driver wasn’t in fault and this man had a history of seuzures and far too often it is seen people aren’t doing anything to address seizures and prescribed medicine is available and if taken for a while corrects seizures. I’m not a doctor but a living testimony that after taking medication for seizures regularly before I haven’t had seizures for 18+ years now. The deceased mab shouldn’t had been behind the wheel of that vehicle knowing his medical condition. People need to stop being ignorant and address their issues if help is available

  7. Bring back the 30 MPH signs on the mud flaps! says:

Those that have lived here for a while will remember the days when all of the dump trucks on the island had 30 MPH signs on their rear mud flaps. Everyone thought that it meant that the dump trucks were only allowed to travel at 30 MPH. Even the dump truck drivers thought this was the rule! Then one day someone spilled the beans that dump trucks were not restricted from driving over 30 MPH, and all hell broke loose. The dump truck drivers have been driving with their gas pedal foot to the floorboard ever since. #facts.

  8. Anonymous says:

Its pretty clear the truck was in the correct lane..

  9. Anonymous says:

They should all be driven into the sea.

Jake braking, bald tyres, speeding, driving slow in the right lane or fast in the left lane, all while spewing crap out their exhausts.

The amount you see on the side of the road with destroyed tyre treads, broken axles etc speaks volumes to the road worthiness.

That being said, in this instance, looking at the oil slick where the collision appears to have taken place, this probably ain’t the truck’s fault.

    • Anonymous says:

Or they are broken down blocking the road… Again, don’t think in this case was the truck driver’s fault but these trucks do cause all of the headaches you mention and more.

    • Anon says:

I’m a truck owner and i can say personally say

      “Jake braking & bald tyres”
That is true, most of these are owners driving their own truck or have drivers who do that BS, for the cash they get from working can get tires but no to be cheap they go and get used ones, go on the road with load and tires get hot and buss and with weight it makes matters worst and cause of those it gives all truckers a bad name especially with the jakes.

  10. Get them off the roads! says:

Every day, and I mean every single day, I stop at the corner of Mary Street and North Church Street just opposite Casanova’s restaurant. I indicate to turn right and head towards West Bay Road on North Church Street. I look left before pulling out, and every time, here comes a huge dump truck with a full load, flying up the narrow ass road along the harbour front. Pedestrians everywhere. Taxis sometimes parked in front of Casanova’s blocking half the road. Dump truck guys don’t care. ZOOM!! Thundering by as fast as they can go. These guys should be banned from the roads. Where the hell unna going so fast???

    • Anonymous says:

@10:15 Without doubt the most ridiculous and badly designed junction on the island. 3 pedestrian crossings all next to each other. What clown thought that one up? Put up metal bollards to stop taxi drivers, buses, cars and people using the fish market from parking there and get rid of at least one of the crossings.

      • Anonymous says:

civli service/NRA and pwd…at their finest.
plus the dangerous non-compliant railing in front fish market and waterfront too….
        welcome to wonderland.

    • Anon says:

I can understand your pov but for me as a driver who usually move sand from the dock, we do have a mix of good and the stupid drivers in the trucks but most time people pull out and expect us truckers to slow down, it is very hard especially doing it with a heavy heavy load all of a sudden and many people dont know what’s it like for trucks to slow down with a heavy load

      • Get them off the roads! says:

I understand what you mean sir. And obviously you’re one of the good ones. Just please try to get your fellow truckers to understand a few things. This is a small island. There is absolutely no reason that they should not try to be more careful. They are driving a huge machine already. Add a heavy, shifting load to that. Then add speed. Then add pedestrians. And other cars. And narrow roads. Everyone wants you guys to be able to earn a living. Just please drive more carefully.

  11. Beaumont Zodecloun says:

Sorrowful. While I don’t know any of the details of the crash, I feel for the family of the victim. He had no idea today would be his last. A sobering heads up for us all. Rest in Peace dear Sir. 63 is far too young for a working man.

  12. Anonymous says:

6 more people have now died on our roads than have from Covid.

  13. Anonymous says:

These dump trucks should be banned from driving through Bodden Town. They should go down on the bypass road as the road in town is too narrow for speeding trucks.

    • Hafoo says:

They need to bypass Bodden town completely. The road is too narrow, and the people have thier house in the road.especially near gun square.

    • Anonymous says:

Looks like he hit the dump truck not vice versa.

    • Anonymous says:

And they drive like idiots, speeding, pulling out into traffic, basically not giving a ….

      • Anonymous says:

Exactly! A speeding dump truck passed me on double yellow lines in this area not that long ago just because I was doing the speed limit. Turned off the road about a quarter of a mile after passing me.

    • Anonymous says:

Exactly. Wasn’t that bypass road built for that purpose?

    • JTB says:

They should certainly be fitted with speed limiters, and an effort to make sure their drivers are at least reasonably competent

    • Anonymous says:

I can’t speak to the specifics of this case, but it was only a matter of time before one of these very aggressively driven heavy vehicles ended up killing someone on our roads,

My heart goes out to the victims family, but this will not be the last incident like this if there is not a crackdown coming on what is a very serious, and island wide problem.

Aggressive drivers are a problem everywhere on the world.

Aggressive dump truck drivers are not.

Most people, in most places, who drive behemoths like that while sharing the road with pedestrians and smaller vehicles have the brains to do so safely.

Not in Cayman though, where the race to make one more trip today hauling garbage or gravel from here to there, easily trumps the value of life for some.

And until it is no longer tolerated, it’ll keep happening.

    • Anonymous says:

We’ve all seen them speeding and driving like morons, even for Cayman

    • Anonymous says:

Wonder if the 2 gas stations in central BT will support that idea.

    • Another BT Resident says:

Aside from this incident (as we know nothing about how it happened) I think people are righteously fed up with dump trucks generally. I used to have a lovely quiet place near the main road but recently moved because of constant noise and dust from the trucks thundering up and down, and honking horns all day and night. It just got too much to bear in the end – having to turn TV or radio up, barely able to sleep, sit in the yard or have a phone call for the noise. Thick layers of dust on all my surfaces if opened windows. And its scary when they are up your bumper or overtaking when you are already doing the speed limit. I really think they should have tougher regulations, inspections and emissions testing. And I agree. Most of our older roads are too bumpy, small and just not built to take all this heavy traffic.
