Traveller tests positive for COVID-19

(CNS): One traveller, who remains in isolation, has tested positive for COVID-19 in the latest batch of screening results. Following several days of negative results in those entering and leaving quarantine, there was just one case on Thursday among 334 results, with the rest being negative. Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee confirmed that this latest patient is asymptomatic.

There are now 18 active cases of the virus in Cayman from a running tally of 240 people who have contracted the virus since March. Government has not yet confirmed the number of symptomatic cases at present, though one person who has been ill for several weeks is understood to still be in hospital in critical care.

Testing continues for those going into home isolation and those at the end of their 14-day quarantine period. Front-line workers are also still being tested, as well as members of the public who request a test.

Speaking in Finance Committee on Thursday, Health Services Authority CEO Lizzette Yearwood confirmed that the HSA still has 99,000 PCR tests, which are good until April next year. But with a growing number of travellers coming into the country, she said officials continue to monitor the country’s wider testing needs and to look at sourcing more rapid testing kits to complement the existing stockpile.

At present there are 708 people in isolation, which includes 63 more returning travellers since yesterday.

Just keep your vitamin D levels of 55 ng/ml or higher.

Can Dr Lee explain what happens to a traveller who tests positive at the end of his quarantine. How often is he re-tested and can he be released after one negative test?.

If the person test positive, they will remain in quarantine for an additional 10 day’s and will be tested accordingly.

This topic is so boring, can we talk about William McKeeva Bush ?

Speaking of quarantine hassles: when will the area residents of Dragon Bay, regular and re-routed Crystal Harbour, frequent visitors/provisioners/security to Holiday Inn quarantine facility, and golfers of North Sound Club, and other public user victims, finally reach their boiling point, and band together to force DART to pay for the suspension damage to their vehicles/bus fleets from their neglecting to maintain a safe public easement access through their Dragon Bay property on their private road, per their legal obligations? We’ve had weeks of dangerous destructive standing ponds concealing 9″ deep car-suspension-totaling pot holes. Years of treacherous uneven sewer grates and shaded unmarked heaving mounts. There’s little, or sporadic effort to maintain sidewalks, drains, shrubs, and encroaching boulevard vegetation. It’s time for a class action lawsuit to legally correct the years of belligerent high-handedness by this organization, and reformat their culture of operation in the Cayman Islands, holding them to account.

those road issues have nothing to do with dart.
more likely cheap original developers or crystal harbour…

DART acquired the 220 acre “Safehaven” property in late 2011, along with the standing administration obligations and duties that continue for the next 70 years. This was a 140 year headlease administration agreement, with very clear easement obligations that were restated in the 2016 NRA Agreement, and signed-off by them. The roads have never been CIG responsibility or Gazetted public roads, these are DART’s private cost and burden, which they continue to ignore. DART really seem to enjoy flexing all of the rights of ownership without any of the neighbourly burden of administration and right of safe public passage. It’s time for that attitude to change. Via the courts if necessary.

So, what is wrong with this headline?

“US reports single-day record of 88,500 coronavirus cases with states like Illinois and North Dakota reporting all-time highs – but one NYC hospital says death rate for severely ill has fallen by 70%”

    Anybody?

    • Anonymous says:

Nothing is wrong with it. Cases are up but the death rate per infection is down because of improvements in in-hospital mortality. This is brought about by a greater understanding of disease management (delaying using invasive ventilation, use of steroids to reduce inflammation of severely ill, use of anti-coagulants as blot clots are a major cause of death).

      Still a very fearsome pathogen.

It was only one hospital out of very many reporting that decrease. The explanation could be as simple as the instructions given to ambulance crews taking people to individual hospitals. When hospitals/ICUs are filling up ambulances are typically instructed to take the sickest people to other hospitals.Hospitals receiving the least sick people probably have the lowest death rate.

The same time it reduces the isolation period to 7 days!

    • Anonymous says:

The incubation period of the virus is 2-14 days. Testing on the day of travel will be a valuable addition but it does not magically change the incubation period of the virus.

The only safe practice is to isolate/quarantine travelers for 14 days after arrival and then require them to test negative to get out of isolation.

Departure airport testing using the new LAMP technology reduces the risk for travelers, our front line people dealing with travelers, and everyone else in Cayman. We should definitely require it for all incoming travelers.

I agree!! All this effort **and people willing to self-isolate for 14 days and we are not requiring a test BEFORE they board the plane?

It is a PLANE!! And yes with masks the risk is lowered to other passengers, but still a risk and tests are available so WHY are we skipping this part of the process?

Just because you feel okay and no symptoms doesn’t mean you are not going to infect my returning family member scheduled for travel time in November.

Please Dr. John Lee, ask people to test before flying/arriving!!!!

Okay, so our neighbours did their 14 days isolation/quarantine and we thought with all these new staff employed just for this new approach, they would have been tested at their home. NOPE. They were required to take a taxi into town and wait in a room full of dozens of other quarantiners also there TO BE tested.

How is this not the exact same exposure environment as a plane? What if theyve now just been exposed in that room? They may as well start their 14 day incubation/quarantine period again. I really thought our Government has this better thought out. This quarantine process is an absolute waste of time, stress and finances for everyone if this is how they are doing it. False sense of security, at best.

They should be able to drive themselves if they can

        • Anonymous says:

You think they shouldve rented a car for 2 weeks while they were not allowed to leave their house? Or that it was wrong for them to “expose” themselves to a single taxi driver only to be later exposed to dozens of possibly covid positive travellers by our government? I think you kind of missed the point!!!

        • Anonymous says:

They should not be going anywhere until after they have tested clear.

          • Anonymous says:

I dont have the time or crayons to explain this to you. Read the post again and look at your response. SHEESH

What you describe may amount to criminal negligence.

When is government going to insist on the new LAMP Covid testing at departure airports so that we do not have infectious people traveling into Cayman? That would make things safer for everybody.
