Eight travellers COVID-positive
(CNS): Dr John Lee, the chief medical officer, said that eight travellers at both the beginning and end of their stay in quarantine have tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus. The eight cases were among a batch of 345 samples processed between Thursday and Friday, the rest of which were negative. There has been no indication if any of these individuals are suffering symptoms.
The group increases the number of active cases in Cayman to 20, at least four of which are suffering symptoms, including one patient who remains on a ventilator in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
The tally of positive people in Cayman since testing began in March is 233 out of the 43,506 tests that have now been carried out.
Officials have still not revealed the exact number of people in both home isolation and quarantine at this time, despite requests from CNS for the current figures.

I am in quarantine at the moment nearing the end and no complaints from me whatsoever – this is absolutely necessary based on the fact that there were people on my flight with COVID 19. Everyone knows what they signed up for and remember we are not doing this for ourselves it’s for the vulnerable persons in the community that would not survive this terrible virus should it be brought into these Islands. So everyone relax and abide by the rules look at the results and no need to critique someone in quarantine it sounds like they are having a tough time so layoff and consider how lucky you are to be in the Cayman Islands during this terrible period. Cannot fault the CI Government approach at all. Yes Travel Time / Cayman Travel did their job well – thank you. Frontline staff at the airport as well thank you. Be safe.
So some are testing positive after 14-15 days of quarantine (which is it?). Now what, when will they be tested again, and at what intervals, until they show up negative (twice?)?
I believe it’s every 48 hours after their last test.
Thank you.
There is a very economical coronavirus gurgle test available which works within a 95% accuracy and the results are available under 15 minutes. Already heavily implemented in many public places as schools, hospital etc. all over Europe. Easily could be implemented at airport gates.
Seems to be working well for Europe…
Nobody talks about the visitors coming in on BA who are FCO members and intelligence personal and have a quarantine exception! Just check on your BA flight there are always persons who either leave the plane first or disappear during the process. Maybe somebody can shoot a photo at which door they escape.
Ask the Governor? I noticed this from some of the very first flights and no one seemed to care or ask questions. Someone said they were UK military and another said they were coming to work on the airport. Apparently, that is why the Governor’s office held tight control of the BA flights but let the civil service run the Miami flights.
Alden should know too but he is too damn afraid of the Governor to say anything. I’m surprised the Marl Road hasn’t made a stink about it yet. CNS maybe you can find out from the Governor exactly why these people are coming and going and just why they don’t have to go to quarantine with the rest of the passengers from the flight. Do we have a special place we are housing them? Exactly what are they here for?
And the redbay test may not have been positive either. Shock of shocks…
At least UK people can abide by rules so will probably not break quarantine. On the other hand why are JA flights allowing return passengers when we already have at least 20,000 of them here breaking rules daily.
British Airways is sitting everyone together in business class while economy is empty.
This is just increasing the risk of Covid passing between passengers all because business class is $5000 a seat from the U.K.
Do you have a source for this total BS? Makes no sense. Where are you getting your erroneous made up gossip?
Anyone who has flown BA will be able to tell you that they are discounting Business and Premium seats, and economy is empty. I guess they were told they could fly at 30% capacity, and they chose to seat everyone in the front. Having said that recent studies put the risk of catching anything on a flight as very very low due to the Hepa filtration and constant air changes. I flew on BA last month and premium was completely full.
On last Thursday’s incoming BA flight all the business class seats and almost all in premium economy seats were full. There were about 30 passengers in the two economy cabins, only two in the rear cabin with 180 seats.
actually they have to place people near the front for weight distribution to ensure the plane maintains a safe angle of attack at all stages of flight. If the plane was 80% full it wouldnt matter, but if only 1/3rd or so of seats are allowed be sold, they have to place them mostly upfront, certainly not all at the back or else its unsafe to fly.
This makes no sense at all. If all the weight has to be up front “for weight dustribution” how can it ever safely fly full?
What if “just” one of these positive travelers will go to home quarentine and have “just” 1 visitor to his home during the 2 weeks quarentine..
We are all going back to lockdown very soon at this rate
what if you slip on a banana peel and break your hip bone or hit your head? If your mind is preoccupied with COVID you might not be very attentive to where you put your feet and overlook a banana peel. There are coconut also.
#outlawbananas
And coconuts
Fact: the same number of persons have died in the Cayman Islands this year as a result of falling coconuts as have from Covid-19.
Someone died from a falling coconut?
Nope, covid neither…
No one tell this poster about how unsafe our roads are!
Haha
Time to put a halt to these infected people coming here No more passengers from the UK!
Skatta Brain, On what basis do you claim the infected passengers come in from the UK. More passengers arrive each month from Miami and Jamaica.
It’s a Jamaican. They’ve already taken over the Cayman Islands. They just want the British out now so they can continue their corruption. That’s why the politicians are being so anti-UK. Check where those politicians were born. They were either born in jamaica or have very close ties. They trying to get the purse strings back so they can spend out the money again like McKeever did. Everyone seem to have forgotten that if it wasn’t for the UK, we wouldn’t be able to be in our bubble now. We would be open and full of Covid like Jamaica or worse.
You would be Jamaica
Covid is a made-up Donald Trump invention. Biden 2019.
Biden 2020, but Covid is not made up.
Is anyo e really shocked by this?
It has to happen
What do we not require a pre test 48 or 72 hours before….This is crazy!
Bermuda knows the way!
Because people can and have faked their tests to get approval to come here. If they test them at the airport when they get here there is no cheating.
You do realize dishonesty can work both ways.
Think you’re a bit too paranoid
So do both like other places! Wow thats hard!
Do both.
People have faked the tests they don’t even need to come “here”. Run along tedious troll.
I think Government is right not to release that information. These people are quarantining and are therefore, unless there is evidence to the contrary, no harm to the general public. This could happen to anyone. I can’t see how knowing their numbers is in any way in the public interest.
Beware prurience. Releasing any information about these unfortunates only encourages the uneducated pitchfork mob represented by CMR – not, I hope, CNS.
You mean like Skatta Brain above?.
We got this under control….right?
If we continue to open please start mask wearing within enclosed public spaces, practice social distancing and lower the crowd number limits.
Accidents happen, but it is too late when we are back in lockdown again.
They are reactive thinkers.
so let’s get this straight covid positive I dividuals are boarding a plane with at least 100 or so people on it. where masks do help sitting in a closed plane for two hours or more is asking for trouble. uk cases worse than us.
This proves testing at the airport works! Testing prior to arrival and 7 days after would work even better!
Only when combined with a mandatory 14 day quarantine and testing at the end of that period
beautiful
Thank goodness for the vigilance of CIG. These travellers are importing the virus while complaining that they had to wait too long on approval to enter. How Ungrateful!!!
Sherri you have to be idigenous to make a comment like that.
Anon you have to be a foreigner to make a comment like that.
Caymanian you need to Caymanian to make a comment like that…
Caymanian at 12.48pm Leaving people agonising whether they will be able to fly home until late the night before their flight is unconscionable but very Caymanian – 99.9% do not have the virus.
Hope they all get well soon.
It shows that the procedures we currently have in place are necessary.
Cayman is so much more fortunate than most places in the world.
How many travelers restarted positive so far and what is the number of travelers that have arrived since quarantining?
I think that’s 20 new cases of the c-virus in 1 week here. That’s way too many, so Government need to tight up who they let in. Folks remember how bad it was during lock down . We need to be very, very careful.
And people still want to open to tourists?
Rest of the Caribbean is open basically from November 1st
So? They have Covid. We do not. Spot the difference?
They have money, we do not, spot the difference.
There will never be a time in which covid will not be present. Zero is not possible when the entire world is dealing with the same disease. Even One(1) positive case is not zero. If the Cayman Islands are expecting zero Covid, then it is going to be a long wait. And when the borders open, covid will spread just like it had everywhere else. There is no herd immunity without exposure. That’s the truth.
Let in too many people without being tested before boarding the flight, need to have them tested 24 hours before the flight with negative results, otherwise Cayman going in to another lock down. Then every thing will come to a grinding halt and Everyone here going to suffer badly.
But the test result takes up to 72hrs to come back because of the slow biochemical reaction. By which time you’ve missed the plane and lost $5000 on your non-cancellable hotel.
Airport based pre-boarding tests for Covcid are being offered at some airports. Perhaps those are the only airports we should accept travelers from.
that is correct Tampa is the first US airport to do so (15 minute test or full test) (I flew from Miami and there was no social distancing) TPA will be first in nation to offer COVID testing to passengers

Well said 👍
Should be making travelers test before they come. Then test them again after a certain number of days in quarantine.
It would make more sense to test a traveler over 2 tests , one 14 days prior to boarding their flight, if negative then, do a 2nd test 48 hours before the trip. Then you have covered the incubation period. Could weed out infectious folks flying . You could technically still pick up the virus in the airport though on day of travel. What is the immediate short term solution ? The long-term?
Lockdown isn’t it by the way. Having a plan and management would be a start.
Short term solution is testing immediately before they board the plane. At least one airline in the States is doing that for flights to Hawaii.
Test again by CIG once on island and 7 days in quarantine.
Not true. Test results come back in under 24 hours all over the USA.
Dream on. The only rapid tests widely available are antigen tests and the CIG wisely has refused to accept those in the past. While rapid PCR tests exist, they are nearly impossible to find.
I was tested on arrival back here Thursday at about 3.30pm or so, and had my result by 11.30pm same night.
15mins test now in LHR
Pity them!. I’m going crazy after just 2 days locked up in a hotel room, and I still have another 14 days to go. These people have already served their 16 days and presumably will continue indefinitely until they test negative.
Get a book
Boo hoo. Bunch of whiners. I wish I could be locked up in a hotel room for 16days. Food delivered. No cooking or cleaning. Just relaxing and watching TV or reading. At the end of your stay, you get to be in a Covid 19 free island paradise. If it’s so horrible, please go back to wherever you came from. Jeez…now I see why Caymanians say don’t let the door hit you on your way out.
Right. That’s why solitary confinement is the worst punishment modern society has…
“eight travellers at both the beginning and end of their stay in quarantine have tested positive”
Is this a typo? If it isn’t Dr Lee needs to retest his test. The chance of them all still being positive two weeks later is zero…
Not correct that this has zero chance of being possible. It is improbable but not impossible. There are occasionally persons that test positive for extended periods of time.
Please explain your reasoning. The incubation period is 14 days and in some cases people have tested positive 40 days after exposure (tail risk). So I don’t see how they can’t be positive after 2 weeks, particularly if they were exposed at the airport
What do you think the odds of all 8 for 8 still being positive. 1/1000 to 1/1million or something to that order. Whatever the odds are for one raised to the 8th power.
