Visiting pod of killer whales caught on camera

(CNS): The Department of Environment has posted captivating drone video footage of a pod of orcas about two miles off the coast of East End last week. There were at least ten of these ‘killer whales’ in the pod, which are infrequent visitors to our waters. The footage was taken by Chris Briggs and given to the DoE to help them in their mission to catalogue the marine mammals and sharks that are passing through our area.

Not as good eats as the turtle but in these unprecedented times we can’t be picky I suppose.

I think i’d rather save the sharks and take my chances with the virus. We’ve caused enough damage to this planet.

    Yey, that’s cool.
Finally some good news rather than propaganda all the time.

Now someone tell me before the ban on cruise ships how often we saw larger wildlife come to the island?

2nd-time whales are spotted in less than 2-3 months?

    • Jm says:

Pretty often actually, I’ve seen this same pod twice before as well as multiple other species.

Fully-grown whales and porpoises, with their complex social groups, and decades of migratory routes, are out there all the time, even the majority of the time when seas aren’t flat and humans aren’t present with cameras. It’s nice to have a rare glimpse into their world, but there is not necessarily any cruise ship correlation, much as we might all want there to be.

As much as I would like to agree with the two posters above.
I would find it hard to believe any whale with strong hearing would come close to the island when they hear the engines of the cruise ships constantly running. That rumble could be heard from miles away by whales.

Just saying, by a born Caymanian.

Well as a charter captain who has spent more time out there than you ever will, I can assure you that they aren’t at all affected by engine noises. In fact- that’s what usually draws them to the boat. I’ve even taken a cruise in Alaska and saw killer whales following and jumping next to the ship.

Within a few miles from shore I’ve seen dolphins, killer whales, sperm whales, pigmy sperm whales, Argentinian beaked whales, pilot whales, false killer whales and many more that travel miles just to come check out the boat. But yea, you know best- right?

BTW, claiming to be a “born Caymanian” while posting anonymous on an online form holds absolutely no water.

So, in the last 7 months that there has been a local restriction on cruise ships, and no other changes in transoceanic traffic, fully-developed pods of whales (with hearing sensitivity) have been calved, fully matured, and taken up roost in Grand Cayman where (despite years of photos and film clips to the contrary) you assert they never ventured before. Respectfully, the only Cayman-based explanation is widespread alcohol-fueled amnesia and misplaced overconfidence in seemingly-coherent false causal relationships.

This is a great example of ignorant people going by emotion and not logic/ facts. It’s clear by the thumbs down on our previous comments that the average CNS reader thinks this way.

Thanks for sharing the video, I was forwarded a part of it over social media. Wonderful news in the midst of a lot of negativity.

    Magnificent!

P.S. Did you read that 500,000 sharks must be killed to make Covid and Flu vaccines?

    • Anonymous says:

To be precise, the sharks that go to their rest are all volunteers who live on the planet Gorgon in the Crab Nebula. Get your facts straight with these anti-vax stories.

    • Anonymous says:

      No.

P.S. Did you read that every day 500,000 idiots post dumb sh*t on online forums.

      • Anonymous says:

Every single media source has run an article on sharks and vaccine.

One cursing word in one sentence comment is a lot. 3️⃣ is too much.

You can learn how to debate civilly. I assume you are past middle school age when this kind of language is considered normal.

500,000 sharks may have to die in the fight against COVID-19. Here’s why
      https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article246069130.html

“Sharks produce squalene, a natural oil made in their livers, which is an ingredient in several COVID-19 vaccine candidates.”

    • Anonymous says:

Squalene, a hydrocarbon obtained for commercial purposes primarily from shark liver oil and other botanic sources, is increasingly used as an immunologic adjuvant in several vaccines, including seasonal and the novel influenza A (H1N1) 2009 pandemic flu vaccines.

    • Anonymous says:

They are working on a synthetic version as there is a quote in most of the articles dealing with this that “harvesting” half a million wild animals is not going to be done. I don’t know what the cut-off is, but apparently 500,000 is considered too many.
