Three injured in Crewe Road crash

| 15/08/2020 | 33 Comments

(CNS): A two-vehicle crash on Crewe Road around midday today (Saturday) left three people injured, one of them seriously. Police said that the collision, which happened just after noon in the vicinity of Canal Lane, involved a green Toyota Passo and a grey Kia Rio. The driver of the Toyota, who was alone in the car, was trapped inside and had to be extricated by the Cayman Island Fire Service officers. Police said he was immediately transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital by ambulance, where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

The driver and the single passenger in the Kia Rio were also taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment but their injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

The roadway, which was closed following the crash, has now been cleared and is once again now open to the public. Police did not indicate how the crash happened but said it is under investigation.

One thing is clear, it wasn’t the ignorant tourists causing all the traffic chaos. If anything, it is worse without them.

While driving heading south on the stretch of the ETH between the most northerly roundabout and the big roundabout at Yacht Club, I overtook (or should I have said undertook) four (4) vehicles proceeding at less than 40mph on the inside lane of the dual carriageway. Go back to driving school, you idiots! Stay on the outside lane unless you are overtaking or making a right turn at the next roundabout! SIMPLE! Oh dear, why do I waste my time.

Can somebody explain why they’re working through the night to fix the runway when our borders are closed, instead of finishing the roads before the chaos of school reopening happens?

Would you rather they work on the runway while flights are landing? And by the way… they aren’t just “fixing” it.

I’d rather them not bother turning it into the circus/zoo it was just before lockdown and left it as the small, quaint airport it was.

90% of the accidents I’ve witnessed have involved Jamaican drivers (which having driven in Jamaica myself explains why most of the accidents here involve Jamaicans). The solution is to make it illegal for Jamaicans to drive here period and the road safety numbers will improve.

The ineptitude of drivers in Cayman when it comes to roundabouts is shocking. I can’t stress this enough. That combined with speeding on the roads has led to many accidents and in turn, deaths.

Easy solution for roundabouts is to start ticketing people for improper use or lack of indicator usage on roundabouts. Watch how fast these islands will learn to use a roundabout.

As for speeding, maybe speed cameras with postal ticketing? Although this could contribute to congestion and traffic so I’m not 100% sold on this solution either.

Let’s start with the idiots responsible for the road markings and blocking the outside lane for persons going straight across.

I am a middle aged female and I take care of my health. I eat a healthy diet , exercise and watch my weight. I do everything I can to prevent infection( hand washing, taking vitamins and getting vaccinated). I do everything I can to mitigate the risk of dying at a young age. Unfortunately the biggest risk to my health is when I use the roads in Cayman.

I consider myself to be a good driver and I follow the rules of the road.It seems I am in the minority of road users that use indicators and know hoe to use a roundabout.

What chance have we got to improve road safety when is is given such little attention by the Police, who seem incapable of driving correctly themselves ?

I’m utterly fed up with the RCIPS, the only police “service” in the world that cannot see what all the rest of us see every day of our lives, and which actually employs officers who do not know the rules of the road (when are they going to be taught how to drive round roundabouts, for example?).

Trucks with bald tires and faulty lights, cars with illegal tints and custom light features, a total race-track outside Hurley’s – and not a cop in sight. It’s disgraceful.

Here’s a suggestion: why not just foot-patrol the supermarket car parks and ticket every infringement? Or is that too much like hard work?

    God it makes me sick.

But the traffic department was axed, and is now only recently getting back up to full strength.

People see speed traps set up by South Shore, but don’t see them set up by Hurley’s. People get angry. There’s only several traffic officers available on a good day.

Each ticket issued probably takes about 30 minutes, when stopping, talking, writing and processing the ticket are all taken into account. You want officers to issue more tickets? make the system fit for purpose.

The police are only one facet of this issue.

Crap employers giving drivers crappy vehicles.

Inspections that aren’t actually done, yet paperwork is.

Owners letting idiots drive their cars.

      DVDL records are garbage.

      New license plates are garbage.

Police drivers and other professional drivers are generally terrible. Dump truck idiots, cab idiots, bus idiots, delivery driver idiots.

      Stupid road designs.

      Stupid road markings and signage.

      Terrible driver education.

Drivers from many backgrounds. Generally EU license holders = good, Canada, US = fair, rest of the world = bad, Jamaica = beyond terrible.

We’ve ruined our economy because we refused to let one person residing in Cayman die from COVID-19 but we refuse to install sidewalks and bike lanes.

Public service announcement: could all the crap drivers please stop driving like crap drivers.

Constantly driving in the right lane? Driving a Jeep with ‘cool’ red lights at front of the vehicle? Constantly talking on your phone while driving? Overtaking people on South Sound? Unable to indicate on a roundabout? Tailgating the car in front all the time? Driving at the km/h limit when it’s posted in MPH?

Answer yes to anything above? Then you may be a crap driver.

No excuse for this on a 30mph road

I was aggressively tailgated all the way home from Hurley’s on South Sound Road today. The speed limit is 30, I am doing between 30 and 35. It is hard to do 30 on a wide open roadway. But that is the speed limit. If drivers do not think that is an appropriate speed limit they need to take that up with their MLAs. Dangerously tailgating does not help anyone and leads to accidents.

Same here. Idiot came screaming up behind me, overtook on solid white line by Vela, then didn’t pass another car doing the speed limit on dotted line. Waited til next solid and almost caused a head-on collision. Need to get a dashcam to record these idiots.

Please drive left & overtake right
(On our dual carriage by passes slow vehicles often driving in the right hand land causing drivers to overtake on the inside).
Please use the correct lanes on roundabouts, if you taking the last exit going around the roundabout then you start out in the tight hand lane. Pretty diagrams have been drawn on the road at most roundabouts. Try to look at them to check you are in the correct lane.
