Senior customs officer fired for gross misconduct
(CNS): Collector of Customs Charles Clifford has sacked a senior customs officer for gross misconduct as a result of an incident last September inside and outside the headquarters that involved a member of the public, according to a statement. It is understood that the woman was already on required leave at the time she was fired as she has also been arrested in connection with allegations of evading customs duty. However, the dismissal is unrelated to that accusation, which is being investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
In a relatively rare case of a public servant being fired, Clifford said that the woman was the subject of an internal investigation that was conducted in accordance with the Public Service Management Law and was on leave during that time. He said that inquiry found that the officer’s behaviour significantly breached the Civil Service Code of Conduct, as set out in the Public Service Management Law, and the Customs Department’s Workplace Rules.
Clifford added that the dismissal was strictly in response to her conduct as a senior customs officer on the day of the incident in September and not as a result of the allegations of corruption which were made against her by a customer. Given that ongoing anti-corruption probe, Clifford said it would be inappropriate for him to comment any further on the issue at this time.

I had doubts about Chuckie’s appointment to this job but he is certainly kicking butt and taking names. Maybe they should let him loose on other departments like immigration?
How about the fill-stealing NRA guy – how many months does it take to figure that criminal scheme out and shit-can them? We pay far too many months of paid leave for criminals while their interdepartmental cronies “hmm and ha” over the right thing to do. These decisions shouldn’t have to wait for DPP. We need basic Standards in Public Life now.
really now
I am quite amazed at the number of congratulations for Mr Clifford. How many more has he sacked, why was this incident covered up for so long XXXXX
CNS: The other thing is ongoing.
10:27 The fact is he was a good police officer and way too honest to be a politician. I think he’s found his calling now. Be interesting to see how long it takes the vested interests here to step in and try to topple him
Job well done , and well deserved for someone with the attitude she had she walked and talked as though she was untouchable a very rude woman .
DP please please continue clean up the CS
ALSO ID LIKE TO NOTE NOT ALL CS ARE RUDE , CURROPT,LAZY,GREEDY, THERE ARE A FEW FROM SEVERAL SECTIONS WHOM WORK HARD AND ARE VERY PLEASANT.
To those people please continue doing the awesome job you all do daily.
Licensing staff at BT need to be brought down a notch with their terrible customer service. You’d swear every woman in there getting bun the way their faces are sour. Let’s not even start on the inspectors who seem so content to sit there and do nothing. Anyway, there is a girl at licensing Grand Harbor who turned my experience around despite the long wait this morning. Very friendly and thorough, been there a while too. Wish I had asked her name.
Seems to me you got a personal issue with this person. I think if the truth was revealed THE PUBLIC would sing a different story. Remember there is always THREE sides to a story. The public only heard bits and bits and I am curious to hear THE WHOLE STORY behind this dissmissal. What happened to the others?
When employees feel that the public / customers are indebted to THEM they treat them with disrespect unprofessionally this particular customs officer had the same mind set . As a senior officer to carry on the way she did knowing very well what general orders state on how to conduct yourself when dealing with irate or complicated customers her lack of professionalism gave her her walking papers no one to blame but her own self.
One less to give us bad service.
I was there that day and have jad to deal with her on many occasions for my job. So yes i know what i say is the truth good that they fired her. She wanted to fight the man imagine that.
Don’t forget the department heads with their nepotism and favoritism. Giving preferential treatment to some. One such head is now AWOL and there are others that should join this individual.
Well thats what she was getting until the public witnessed it first hand. Got what she deserved.
Why can we not prepay duty for air arrivals? It would make everyone’s entry so much much easier. Why must we live in the Stone Age? Customs needs to be purged of the old guard and brought into the modern age, or at least the last century. We are acting in a 1970s mode at best. It is such a waste of time and money as it presently exists.
Maybe she was the one who hijacked my shipment went I queried an incorrect duty. This whole department needs an overhaul, it is ridiculous, and anti-business.
Star8 up sweetheart…they are very over zealous and will do anything to keep your products from selling to legal entities if they can. Terrible. Sabottage to say the least!
At least Clifford had balls to fired staff unlike other departments!
Clifford is the man
Need about 5 Charles Clifford’s in government! One for Customs, one for Immigration, one for the Police, one for the Port Authority and one for the new Human Resources Ministry.
Keep going, I’m sure there’s more. DEH, HSA, DOE etc etc and so on and so on…
The police does this every couple of months.
Well done, Chuckie.
A pity other Departments and Ministries do not follow your example.
So true, start with govt employees working for themselves during govt time. Too may public servants lining their own pockets at the people’s expense. It’s corruption, pure and simple. Using govt time, vehicles and fuel to conduct personal business must stop.
Why don’t you use the regulatory framework that government has created and make a complaint to one of the many and growing bodies that investigate corruption?!
But no one gets fired in the civil service? Oh wait that was a long time ago.
Name please, forever to be enshrined on the wall of shame.
Good! Thank you Mr. Clifford.
He had the courage to actually fire her.
Too many civil servants are being placed on “required leave” for years and being paid while their case is being “investigated”.
Other Heads of Departments should follow this example and stop coddling civil servants who are not upholding the integrity of the civil service.
At least Charlie has a pair.
Another one boy oh boy we bad.
Need dismiss the whole enforcement team. They dont know cayman laws because they surely dont endorce them.
This is customs, not immigration.
The laws are but suggestive only.
