Drivers step on the gas along Linford Pierson Highway
(CNS): Police say drivers are going too fast along the new parts of the Linford Pierson Highway, claiming they don’t know the speed limit because there are no road signs due to road construction being carried out on the highway. However, the RCIPS noted that there are, in fact, signs at both ends of the road informing motorists of the speed limit. They say the Linford Pierson Highway has been a 40mph zone since its inception and there are no indications from the National Roads Authority that it has changed.
“So far this month there has been over forty-five speed related traffic stops along Linford Pierson Highway, most of which took place this week,” said PS Lenford Butler from the Traffic Management Unit. “Some of the speeds recorded were in excess of 70mph. Such excessive speed is alarming and we urge the public not to endanger everyone by turning Linford Pierson into a race track.”
Motorists going this fast cannot just be ticketed; this speed exceeds the ticketing threshold and therefore a speeding traffic offence report has to be done and the offender has to go to court, where there is a good possibility that they may lose their licence for a period of time.
Police said the onus is on every driver to ensure that he or she knows the speed limits of the roads they travel and that they follow the law.
Hi read carefully the RCIPS response….”There are speed signs at the end of the Roads” this can easily be interpreted that it makes no sense and no one speeds at the end the roads…..just some thought on this!
Sunday I was passed on the ETH (and nearly hit) by some yank GT power car and a Honda (yes you guessed) at a great rate of knots between the Island Heritage and Fidelity roundabouts, clearly racing….Have some respect for other peoples right to live for goodness sake, there were people everywhere and you guys think you are F1 racers, you have nowhere near those skill levels and should not be doing on public roads anyway!
I’ve asked before but I will say again:
Can our signs say mph (too many drivers with only kph spedometers go at 40 kph instead of 40 mph)
Can a sign be added under the speed limit saying “Drive left lane. Overtake right”
“Use indicator or $1000 fine”.
That would make too much sense!
How about we just increase the speed limit on all bypasses to 50 mph. Oh…and while we’re at it, how about we actually dedicate which lane should be a slow or fast lane. Most accidents are caused by:
1. Slow Drivers.
2. Drivers who are not aware of their surroundings.
3. Divers who fail to indicate when they have ample time to do so.
4. First time Tourists who are not accustom to roundabouts.
Need Solutions?
1. Slow Drivers. (Stay in the slow lane).
2. Drivers who are not aware of their surroundings. (Should have NOT been given a FULL drivers license until otherwise proven).
3. Divers who fail to indicate when they have ample time to do so. (May the good Lord help me!!!)
4. First time Tourists who are not accustom to roundabouts. (It should be mandatory for these people to watch a little “How to drive in Cayman”).
Slow Lane? There is no “slow lane”. There is a left lane for staying on and a right lane for overtaking and turning right.
All entrances to all roundabouts should have signs painted on each lane indicating which exit they can take from which lane. Too many times I’ve been cut off by individuals taking the wrong exit.
My family and I were nearly killed in a head-on collision yesterday when a truck swerved into our lane to go around a cyclist. It’s great that they avoided the cyclist, but they almost killed 5 other people in the process, with a combined closure speed approaching 100mph there wouldn’t have been much left of any of us. All of these new highways were budgeted to include dedicated bike and pedestrian lanes in the first phase, yet we can all see that none of them are equipped with these. They don’t even have a normal car-width safety buffer for vehicles with flat tires and breakdowns to safely leave the traffic lanes, and flow is penned with dangerously high curbing on both sides – inches from the roadway. Why are these bad curb jobs initiated before the roadway is cleared, filled, or paved? Who is the roads building supervisor that is authorizing all of these dangerous and expensive mistakes?
No surprise here, we have been complaining about the same thing when people leave the Hurley’s roundabout going east, zoom. Nothing done about that yet so not likely anything going to be done here either
How about those damn motorbikes who scream their engines late at night and keep us awake.
Had a massive truck pass me on the hard shoulder the other day after work between the Red Bay roundabout and the Lantern Point roundabout. Guess 40MPH wasn’t fast enough for him. Cops should be stationed on that stretch every day between 4 and 6 pm.
when are these people going to learn to stay left if you’re going slow so I can safely pass you at 60 in the outside lane. Drivers ed is needed.
I think you mean the inside lane…
Why does this have thumbs down? The passing lane is the inside lane.
Maybe that is the problem, nobody knows what the hell they are doing including the original poster.
No the passing lane is the outside lane, the median is just there to separate the 2 traffic flows. Of course in Cayman lane discipline just does not exist in any form.
60? Surely you jest! But yes, 60 and higher is what many do to pass others driving at the speed limit. I’ve witnessed it myself when a woman overtook me going faster than 60 with a look of attack on her face and as if she owned the road and I should get the hell off……Agressive, selfish, disrespectful, ignorant, reckless and careless drivers behind the wheels.
Why was a policeman on the roundabout with a speed gun yesterday!!!
Even if you catch speeders, they were going a lot slower on the roundabout than they were earlier, or later.
Even our crazy drivers slow somewhat to go around a roundabout.
He was there pointing it up the road, clocking people on the straightaway approaching the roundabout where they could be easily flagged down (because they slow down anyway, as you note). It was actually quite sensible and when I went past they had two vehicles pulled off being dealt with and the next cop in rotation was on post with the speed gun.
I love persons who think that a straight line (or semi straight line) is a “racetrack”
Is the solution to speeding in Cayman eliminating all straightaways?
I think not
Actually look at race courses and you will find that very few if any are straight, if persons actually had a fear of being pulled over for speeding they would likely obey the laws
If they saw that the police monitored these areas which are ideal environments for speeding then perhaps they would follow the laws
Instead of making a stink in the press just increase police presence in the area
Why is it that police feel like instead of doing their jobs they can just issue warnings every 2 weeks saying “don’t do this or that or we’ll get ya!”
Do your damn jobs take control of the roads

Question:
Has the new construction of the road been gazzetted yet?
Hmmm
Drivers Education for all prior to handing out licenses. ! ALL!
endanger everyone by turning Linford Pierson into a race track …. have the “rich” and the gov build a race track for the youth. they could invest money here, education, places for the youth to ride their bikes, better after school programs. oh yea wait. we are all “scumbags” we don’t deserve that eh?
You are not entitled to someone providing this to you, prove your worth. organize, build your own facility with a group effort. Eh?
Paradoxically, the onus is on the career crime-fighters to show up and secure the roadways from lawlessness. That’s one of the line items we are paying for – not for regular press releases ironically underscoring their wide-variety of derelictions.
i wonder why just this road is targeted for speeders because there is a lot more speeding on esterley tibbetts highway!
Yesterday on ET Highway, 2 dump trucks were racing on the dual lane section going toward town. I was doing about 45 mph and one of them blew by me doing at least 60 mph. Craziest thing I’d seen on the roads in quite some time.
And Shamrock Rd at Spotts
Why do some people insist on driving in the right lane on Shamrock Road when travelling west? It’s so dumb. There is no physical barrier from oncoming traffic, so one little swerve is all it takes to have a massive smash. If there is no car in the left lane, use it. As for the racers… they’re just chronically stupid. Catch, ban, fine and impound.
Because there are only 16 people in the traffic department apparently based on the comments on Ask Auntie. 16!….including 3 civilians.
Mock surprise when witnessing a symptom of their own neglected responsibility to protect and supervise our roads. Enough ironic press warnings that highlight their own failure. The RCIPS needs to get their butts out there and do their jobs. We’ve suffered enough inactivity. It’s up to them to do what we’ve been paying them to do, or compel our leaders to change the administration. We are wasting our money if current police leadership can’t figure out what they need to do, or where they need to be.
Exactly! RCIPS get out and enforce the laws….consistently!
And why are dump trucks allowed to haul wet marl spraying brackish / salt water all over the roadways and peoples vehicles?
All very well, and drivers should certainly be aware of the national speed limit, if indeed there is one. However, several cases in Europe before the courts of justice have quashed convictions for drivers where no road sings were present indicating the speed limit, on the grounds that the driver cannot be expected to know if there is no sign. Now, is that an excuse for crazy driving? No…driving safe is the best for all. There are enough crazies out there now, never mind even more excess speeding.
local idiots will break the speed limit on any decent straight stretch of road…..
where in the article does it state the speeders were local, idiot?
just ask the cops….
What’s the point in building a 4 lane highway with the speed of 40. Should be at least a 50.
You mean the unfinished highway, remember.
The increase in traffic speed is a by-product of having better roads, a sensible approach to curtailing speed is going to be needed, one that is fair, safe, and not too onerous on the public. Whilst I can’t imagine people don’t know what the speed limit is, I don’t think the Police can say that people should know the limit. I don’t know about Cayman, but in the UK if a road isn’t sign posted as prescribed in law then the limits aren’t enforceable, you can still be done for dangerous driving, just not speeding.
You are wrong..if no speed sign then the law is 30 mph all times until next speed sign
People are still speeding and getting tickets? Haven’t they read that it’s cheaper to smuggle exotic animals for resale. What a bunch idiots.
Not only there, not only because there was an accident involving a truck by the spotts dock, but on a daily basis that little part seems to be a drag circuit.
There should have a round about right by the spotts dock to avoid theses speedsters and also to protect the tourists when ships docks there.
Noooo more freaking roundabouts. They should use traffic lights more and on stretches of road like that, LPH, ETH etc. with more than one lane they should enforce a keep left rule and get in lane before junctions.
Nothing wrong with roundabouts for anyone with an IQ over 70.
Traffic lights are very expensive to run..that why many countries building roundabout as it is maintenance free.
Roundabouts are fine; people just need to indicate where they’re going and get in the correct lane. And if you’re going straight on you DON’T start indicating right – when you’re leaving the roundabout. I see this happen on a daily basis at the ALT roundabout. It’s hard to believe that we’ve had roundabouts here for over 25 years and people still don’t know how to use them. I know someone who doesn’t always bother indicating…..because they “don’t see the point”…… God forbid.
I don’t think the missing speed signs are the issue but rather the lack of enforcement over the last few years.
There are also still the signs that one lane is closed even though it no longer is, no signage that there is a new junction, no signage saying that the right lane is only turning right onto Agnes way. Do they think before they do anything?
I’ve only seen one sign advising drivers to indicate and that sign resides on the westbound exit at new airport roundabout where the far right cordoned lane only has one possible traveling direction! You can’t make this stuff up. They should be posted at entries to every roundabout!
I use that route every night and most people still ignore the sign. It’s pretty sad to think that a sign is needed at all!
