Downtown club scene of double-trouble

| 13/11/2017 | 90 Comments

(CNS): Police dealt with two separate and serious crimes at a downtown nightclub Friday, an assault and a shooting, but the suspects in both cases evaded arrest. Just before midnight a 19-year-old man from George Town was inside Margaritaville nightclub in George Town when he was hit in the face with a bottle. The victim sustained a cut to his neck and was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and  released. Police gave no details of the incident but said they were looking for two men. Both were described as around 5’8″, one with brown skin, a slim build and braided hair with beads at the ends, and the second as light-skinned.

As officers were dealing with the injured victim, another altercation erupted in the parking lot. As armed police approached, a gun was fired. Officers went after two men dressed in dark clothing who had run towards Fort Street but the suspects were able to escape. The police said that a vehicle in the parking lot was damaged by gunshot.

This is the second time in less than two months that police have dealt with firearms incidents in the parking lot of Margaritaville.

Anyone with information is asked to call George Town Police Station at 949-4222. Anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online here.

I don’t know really as I’m not a TRUE Caymanian but after 28 years of polite service to the Cayman Islands I see and understand that if we are to see any change in this gang culture that has enveloped us we must take away the core that is ruling the roost. If higher up chains of people involved are in the fight and know names, surely it is both ethical and wise to name, shame and get squads in to round up the minority affecting the majority at whatever cost, cheaper then losing millions of tourism revenue! Just saying!
Dollars spent in way of having specialists in will be rewarded with peace in our society, let’s face facts we are a small island, people know names, squeeze them. Simple really

Still waiting on the 60% gun reduction…….looks more like 60% increase. Thank God no bystander got shot or a tourist from the USA or the U.K. don’t think the government would be able to cover that scenario up. Remember we are the envy of world and work permits are good for the country.

Have been vacationing one week per year in Cayman for the past 15 years, spending my hard earned money on what use to be a safe place and wonderful piece of paradise! However, since illegal immigration has become out of control and the “Dart Group” was allowed to take over the island it has noticeably began to suffer in the past 5 years. Unfortunately, Caymans’ political, legal, law enforcement and public works infrastructure cannot effectively support the current and planned development. You should listen to your Legal Citizens. As, my “measly” $10,000 annual tourism dollars wont ever be back! I fully empathize with the views of so many hardworking Caymanians’..

Hilarious, Dart is the problem. What a fake poster. Who are the majority at northward? Who are the ones who feel like the own the people of the islands because they think they still own the islands, its not Dart. Cayman politics cant keep up with Dart becuase Cayman politics cant even take care of their own without the help of Dart.

“gated resorts with armed guards, just like in Mexico or Jamaica”

The problem is that West Bay Road gets in the way of having large all-inclusive resorts. The way the Kimpton was developed is key – remove a section of West Bay road to allow buildings around a central courtyard opening to the beach. Tourists can be shuttled in from the airport, have everything they want at the resort, and don’t have to be exposed to the deteriorating social pathologies of the island. The trick will be policing the beach, but beach access is being impeded already.

Tourists go to the most desperate islands and are none the wiser, provided they can be sufficiently isolated in a bubble.

When you try to write truth about the reality on our streets and the level of violence and the complicity of this “New” police farce some try to silence your comments. The gun shots always breaks the silence though and you know what else, it breaks their little deliberate deception that they are keeping us safe and all is well on this little island. Those gunshots may not hit their targets thank goodness, but the constant gunfire and gun related violence shatters the belief that Cayman is still a safe place. This story is garbage. The Police were standing at the corner of Kirk House/BK! They did NOT approach anyone! The fight CAME TO THEM and this was AFTER the shot had been fired…minutes after too. The Police didn’t chase anybody. The boys (mostly 17, 18 year olds) came to the top of the street with the fight (yes with the Police right there). They need to STOP LYING to cover up for themselves. Pull up the video footage, as I am sure there was at least 1 functioning camera out there (Court/Burger King)
    — so sick of it. They are there to collect a salary. Witnessed for myself, they are scared themselves! So let the crime run Cayman rampant. Because those who have the control are not actually in control.

On this weekend of remembrance far too many local people think their freedom is a birthright to be abused. It is not, the price paid by others enables you clowns to live the lives you do, on one of the richest places on earth. Yet in return you offer nothing to the world but greed, envy, self entitlement, violence and bigotry.
Try getting of your couches, put your patty and phone down and actually fight the evils that blight this place.
Others, who may never visit this island, are prepared to lay down their lives so you can live yours, what do you do to ensure your country is safe?
Perhaps you should start sending those cowards who hide behind gang colours and pathetic tattoos to join our gang and shoot at people who will shoot back, and won’t miss.

It such a shame that these kids load guns inside the club run down the stairs and start firing-. hello they are families out there, Babies, children running around and these boys just start shooting out into an open area . come on man.

common sense isn’t so common now-a-days.

    the streets aren’t safe anymore.

its like you cant even go out no more and have a good time without having to worry if your life will be in any danger over some A%%%%% doing nonsense.

As a tourist who has been coming here for over 10 years now, I am troubled by the growing number of gun related crimes being reported. One of the main reasons I choose to spend my hard earned vacation dollars here is because I have always felt welcomed and safe. That is changing. I understand no where is 100% safe, but many are safer than others.
Act quickly Grand Cayman to maintain your reputation. In this day and age of social media word spreads quickly if tourists don’t feel safe.

Thank you for putting your thoughts out there about visiting our rapidly new urbanizing island, as for now our paradise is crymbling.

Unfortunately we have this thing called “new urbanism” that has taken hold of our island. And it seems we now have the same new urban social unrest that plagues many urban centres on the continent.

The only way our fast degrading social fabric will change is if the life blood of the tourist industry is swiftly brought to a halt by a bloodbath in central George Town or maybe in our new urban town centre. Then after Tripadvisor and the like start posting travel warnings for Cayman maybe our “head in the clouds” politicians will catch on and do things differently. I’m afraid by then it will be too late and we’ll have to go back to basket weaving and selling thatch rope for the owner of our newest urban centre.

Couple that with a defunct educational system, an island with a high price tag, children having too many children, and don’t forget about the always someone else’s thought mentality…then you let all that bake for a decade or so, and boom you have the making of today’s Grand Cayman.

The family structure which used to be our bedrock is pretty much gone and this is more of the results. Let the Dart Group deal with it and I bet it will be stopped very quickly. Understand this. Cayman’s problem are due to lack of proper leadership. The politicians are self-serving narcissists who squabble over finances while people are stabbing each other over $200 sneakers. This has been going on since the late 80’s and it’s only going to get worse if we don’t demand more of them.

As for the Premier. We need someone with more backbone who values Caymanians more than ‘unity for all’. Caymanians need to be FIRST in Cayman! Plain and simple. That’s the way it is in other countries, so why are we second-class citizens here?

For example, why is our public transport system 100% Jamaican-run? No wonder there are daily complaints. Jamaicans don’t follow traffic laws in their own country so why would they do it here. I’m in my 40’s and I’ve always heard stories of overloaded public buses in Jamaica getting into accidents, falling off cliffs or crashing into things and killing dozens of people. So why are they running OUR bus system? People are complaining DAILY. THEY ABSOLUTELY SUCK AT WHAT THEY DO!!! We need a clean slate of the Public Transport Board. People with more progressive ideas, a new law to punish the drivers for reckless driving and a 3-strikes rule for dereliction of duty to those that refuse to complete their rounds of the eastern districts.
