Police on lookout for stolen SUV and motorbike

(CNS): Police are on the lookout for a 2016 Kia Sorento and a 2006 Yamaha motorcycle, both of which were stolen yesterday. Officers trying to track down the latest auto-thefts said that the bronze Kia with the temporary registration plate T5391 was taken from the car park at Owen Roberts International Airport. The SUV was left there sometime after 5am Thursday, and was taken before it was reported missing around 7:15pm.

Meanwhile, in West Bay a blue, black and white Yamaha XT225 motor cycle, registration 115215 was stolen sometime between 8:45 and 10:45 Thursday morning from outside a home on Aurora Drive, between Birch Tree Hill and Mount Pleasant Road.

This “Not Stolen” Kia was left at the Airport short term with the keys in it for the owner to pick up, who happenned to be a Police Officer. An employee of Autohaus who was at home on maternity leave, one of his family members had left the island and left a similar car in short term also with keys in it for him to pick up. So when he called another employee at Autohaus and asked him to go and pick up the Kia and bring to Autohaus and park in the back and bring him the keys to his house that evening, the 2nd employee picked up the wrong car and brought it to Autohaus and parked it in the back, where it stood for 2 days until the Police noticed it from the road. The Police came and investigated and when we took them to the Airport and found the other Kia still there, with the keys in it, only then did the Police believe that Autohaus had not stolen the car. Was all just a big mistake. The employee brought the keys for the “Stolen” Kia from his home in Bodden Town and all was okay. Sorry for the trouble, was a mistake because the car we were supposed to pick up was not familiar to us.
Proving how safe Cayman is. You can leave your keys in your car and it won’t get stolen. (Probably.)
What a mess! Either way, you shouldn’t leave the keys in the car like that. Unless you asking for trouble.
Christian, you have got to be shi*tting me. all this talk from rcips chastising people to not leave keys in vehicle, get alarm, lock vehicles, dont leave valuables in ’em, dont park in known hot spots for crime etc – now we hearing the guy that left keys in the car at airport is police?? hope this not true, lol. #gtfoh

Can the police confirm why they are stealing cars? Is there a particular car being stolen? How are they breaking in? Are they hot wiring the cars? Some of this information can help us the public protect our properties.

What? You mean it wasn’t a Honda? You are slipping you thieves! Car theft is getting a daily occurrence on this island now, it’s like old news. Sadly, the more it’s carried out the less important it’s going to become. Unfortunately, these thieves are going to hike up the vehicle insurance for all the law abiding citizens………including the thieves!

Wow. For any entrepreneur any clients are welcomed business but I guess when all the expats “get out” your business will survive with just the 15000 (based on registered voters) caymanians as clients.
Maybe Chamber of Commerce needs to do some education sessions via YouTube (target audience those that prefer digital media) on “how foreigners benefit you and your island” and better still “how crime impacts your living and business costs” and “just what would the impact be if foreigners #get out”.
How does one take a vehicle out of the long term park, presumably without paying , get past the boom gate and not get identified by surveillance?
That was my question too and I was told the ticket to long term or short term parking is not tied to a specific car.
The flaw is someone can walk up to the ticket machine, get a ticket, pay for the ticket and use that ticket to drive any car out of the lot.
So your car is not safe just because you have the ticket on you.
They should have cameras by the entrance or exit to capture any funny business but doesn’t seem that they do
Cayman is an island, where are they going to go with the car? Even if they repaint it, they have to register it…….oh wait, Vehicle Licensing screwed up so we have people driving around with no license plates and the police don’t even stop them anymore so no one will think twice about a car with no plates.

That is how they say it here and in the UK. I was confused at first just like you are.
Again this kind of car theft is not done so easy… it really blows me away to think that with what it takes to steel a car in this age it being done so often.., not your average street thug,, the tools need had to be imported

The owner left the keys and ticket in the car. Couldn’t have made it easier to steal
Some people drop the car at the airport if they have an early flight and have a friend pick it up later in the morning. Sometimes they leave it unlocked with the keys under that mat or behind the sun visor. This used to work really well to save a few bucks on parking.
Who on earth still does that…? The thieves know exactly where to look. It’s a no brainer and especially with temporary plates. SMH.
Get your friend to drop you off for doggone sake.
I haven’t left my car key nor house key out for anyone in over 20 years because of fear that someone might steal them.
We need to all use our common sense…but that doesn’t seem too common these days sadly.
Take your car key with you, and leave a spare with a friend or family member from the day before.
