Police at crime scene, 1 October 2016

(CNS) Updated Saturday 12:20pm: Police launched a murder inquiry Saturday morning after a West Bay man, whom they have now identified as Justin Manderson (24), was found with fatal gunshot wounds near Seven Mile Shops, along the West Bay Road, at around 1:40am. He died at hospital about two hours later. The police are now searching for a man seen leaving the scene, who was described as light-skinned, with hair pulled back with a pony tail, wearing light blue jean shorts.

The lead officer on the case, Detective Chief Inspector Malcolm Kay, is appealing for witnesses who were in the vicinity between 1:30 and 2:30am and may have seen or heard anything that sounded like gunshots or someone running away. He noted that people driving home or taxi drivers could have seen something.

The police said that the 911 emergency call centre received a phone call at 1:48 this morning (Saturday 1 October) that shots had been fired and that a man was lying on the sidewalk along the West Bay Road, near the exit of the Seven Mile Shops.

Police and Emergency Units responded to the scene and found that the man was non-responsive. Police officers administered extensive First Aid/CPR at the scene, but an RCIPS spokesperson said the victim succumbed to his injuries at the Cayman Islands Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:33am.

No one else was injured in relation to the incident.

As the George Town Criminal Investigation Department begin their murder investigation, the RCIPS said they have increased patrols in light of any tensions that may arise in relation to this incident.

This is the first murder in Cayman for well over a year, since Jason Powery was killed in July 2015, and is already suspected to be a gang related.

Manderson was known to the police as a suspected gang member and was acquitted last summer of the murder of Victor Oliver Yates (22) in January 2015 after the murder trial collapsed when the witnesses refused to testify in court. Yates was gunned down outside Super C’s in West Bay in the early morning hours of 3 January 2015.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call George Town CID at 949-4222.  Anonymous tips can be provided via the Miami-based call centre Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or here.

It’s sad to see my people killing each other over nothing, not money, drugs or any monetary reason.Cause maybe then it would make some kind of sense, but these youths are killing themselves over nothing. “gangsters” in cayman are the only ones I know that are involved in criminal activity and are always broke. Only hustle enough money to buy Jordan’s and a belt to take pictures on Facebook and Instagram (policewatching)holding guns, smoking weed counting money we know for the” yardies”cause they done smoke their share with their dead ass homies to go hang out at the club To buy one drink with a bag a man, to go home to a board house with leaking zinc roof and a window unit AC and wait that’s mommies house by the way. Come on! If you are going to be a gangster be about it,make money, buy a house for your kids, open a business, make life better for the next generation of family coming up! Stop wasting you time! Get a job. When I was coming up in the game if you didn’t have 10k in your wallet a house, business ,cars, boats, gold and financial security you wasn’t saying bounce! Better you go sell coconuts……..

Why does the media always try to make people look bad. I know they could have chose a better picture of MY JUSTIN. He was not a bad person, he was kind, sweet and loved people wholeheartedly, he was a great father for the short period of fatherhood. You will truly be missed by me…I loved you then, now and always!

You silly little girl; he made himself look bad! He took that “selfie” with what is clearly a gun on his waist, in what seems to be a PUCLIC restroom.

He was not a bad person? So why did he kill people then???

Jesus, it’s like the blind leading the blind around here!

No one cares. His family didn’t love him enough to see to it that he serve time and learn from the wrongs he committed. He didn’t love his family enough to stop being troublesome.

If someone had spoken up, and put this one in jail when he went around terrorizing people, he might have lived to see today.

You have an old saying that goes, “Time longer than rope.”

Let’s pray that your children make you proud. God knows if his family knew he done something wrong they would have talked but remember God is in control and he don’t sleep. So don’t wish anything bad in people cause we all have family. As Caymanian we should be helping one another not fighting and killing each other. May God soul RIP and God’s blessings to his family as they are some of the nicest people in West Bay.

Having seen that this shooting was preceded by another 2 weeks ago, and reading Commissioner Ennis’ comments about some night clubs, have to ask – who owns Nectar, and why is it, unlike its customers, bulletproof.

Somebody needs blaming. Can we bring Baines back or will Bernie start one on the current commissioner?
