Police at crime scene, 1 October 2016

(CNS) Updated Saturday 12:20pm: Police launched a murder inquiry Saturday morning after a West Bay man, whom they have now identified as Justin Manderson (24), was found with fatal gunshot wounds near Seven Mile Shops, along the West Bay Road, at around 1:40am. He died at hospital about two hours later. The police are now searching for a man seen leaving the scene, who was described as light-skinned, with hair pulled back with a pony tail, wearing light blue jean shorts.

The lead officer on the case, Detective Chief Inspector Malcolm Kay, is appealing for witnesses who were in the vicinity between 1:30 and 2:30am and may have seen or heard anything that sounded like gunshots or someone running away. He noted that people driving home or taxi drivers could have seen something.

Justin Manderson

The police said that the 911 emergency call centre received a phone call at 1:48 this morning (Saturday 1 October) that shots had been fired and that a man was lying on the sidewalk along the West Bay Road, near the exit of the Seven Mile Shops.

Police and Emergency Units responded to the scene and found that the man was non-responsive. Police officers administered extensive First Aid/CPR at the scene, but an RCIPS spokesperson said the victim succumbed to his injuries at the Cayman Islands Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:33am.

No one else was injured in relation to the incident.

As the George Town Criminal Investigation Department begin their murder investigation, the RCIPS said they have increased patrols in light of any tensions that may arise in relation to this incident.

This is the first murder in Cayman for well over a year, since Jason Powery was killed in July 2015, and is already suspected to be a gang related.

Manderson was known to the police as a suspected gang member and was acquitted last summer of the murder of Victor Oliver Yates (22) in January 2015 after the murder trial collapsed when the witnesses refused to testify in court. Yates was gunned down outside Super C’s in West Bay in the early morning hours of 3 January 2015.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call George Town CID at 949-4222.  Anonymous tips can be provided via the Miami-based call centre Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or here.

This will continue until BOTH parents are forced by law and our elected officials to morally and financially take responsibility for the offspring they sire…

This and many of Cayman’s problems stem from one main issue – kids having kids. Poor parenting and the discrediting of a good education is a perfect environment for weeds to grow.

In Cayman, it has always seemed as if having a child takes priority over a good education. Without any real exposure, what can this man (child) show and teach his offspring. They cant even take care of themselves but yet they think they are equiped to multiply? Priorities Cayman! Raise the education standards Cayman! Stop breastfeed your grown kids Cayman! Dont know this guys full story but I know many others who are a product of just that.

I know our police force has its fair share of issues but they cant be blamed for the hatred and senseless actions which these guys commit. Their minds are made up, and the police are really there to investigate after the crime has been committed. Bend the tree when its young Cayman!

These cultural differences of tolerances toward violence need to be celebrated. Imagine all the diversity that could be had if these gangsters started going to college and how much they would improve our system. You are racists if you think otherwise.

Twenty-four years old. My goodness, what a waste of a life. When will these boy-men realise the utter meaningless of their life-styles? They consider themselves “men” but are anything but. So sad.

    • under the mango tree says:

What I don’t understand is why would Justin Manderson be hanging out by Nectar on a Friday or Saturday night when that place is a known spot for fights and trouble? If I knew people blamed me for the death of someone else and were seeking to retaliate and kill me I would certainly be keeping a low profile and never be seen in public (unless it was to go to church and clean up my image). Why didn’t his family and friends tell him to stay home, it would have saved his life. People need to speak up and maybe tell their troubled friends to “chill out and stay home.”

      • Jotnar says:

You are absolutely right – superb advice for someone who is not a gun toting gang member. Of course, if you are a gang banger being asked to avoid night spots, bad company and hang out in church is a little bit contrary to the chosen lifestyle.

  7. MM says:

Little boys with grown man toys… And with what will be graduating on to the streets each year we will all need bullet proof vests and burglar bars. Young criminals wreaking havoc and menace on the whole country; parents and politicians playing blame game, police force ill-equipped and ill-prepared.

A few years ago, shortly after (then new) Police Commissioner Baines took up his post, he boldly declared that RCIPS knew all the gang members and gun criminals, and inferred they would soon be rooted out.

Perhaps his unspoken strategy was to leave them and let them kill-off each other. if so, it’s not a good strategy, in my opinion, as collateral damage is always a likelihood, but seemingly quite effective!!

Yes, live by the sword and die by the sword but every one is some mother’s child. Parents need to do their best to deter their children from gangsta life when they’re young. Many of our parents don’t even try.

Sad for the family? Another menace to society is gone, he has killed how many people and got away with murder?

Well his time is up! XXXX Take responsibility Cayman; this is our own home-grown problem!

Look at that pic! He has a gun on his waist, standing in a PUCLIC restroom!

Stop dragging your damn kids up and expecting them to be a frigging accountant or lawyer! And for God sake, do NOT blame the Government for your child’s lack of ambition and purpose! That, dear parents is on YOU!

      • Anonymous says:

You have definitely crossed the line! Despite his past & reputation, he is still human! STILL SOMEONE’S BLOOD!You know NOTHING about what he has or hasn’t done, and quite frankly, it’s not up to you to have a say either. You OBVIOUSLY know nothing about his family to make such accusations. How dare you say his time is up! No one is perfect, and you obviously don’t know him to know that he was trying to change. You sound so narrow-minded. I usually wouldn’t respond to such ignorant comments, but this one is really ridiculous & heartless. You should be so ashamed in commenting this, God doesn’t judge us based on what we’ve done because he knows we have so much to offer, he knows our purpose and he’s a forgiving God. So who are YOU to judge?

I don’t want any arguments. I just pray that your mentality changes. I pray that people will contribute to the change and actually try to listen and think positively, instead of this horrible mentality. This is why gang members feel like it’s impossible to change/start over; people like you are always judging and slapping labels on them as if they are not allowed to change or to human rights. That lifestyle is not easy to come out of; we should encourage them to change, we should provide a shoulder to lean on when turning their life around is hard, not judge or question whether they are worthy enough to live! AND DON’T YOU DARE PUT BLAME ON OR INSINUATE THAT THE FAMILY IS NOT ALLOWED TO GRIEVE OR NOT WORTHY ENOUGH TO FEEL SORRY FOR! You have no right to do so.

        Please grab a Bible.

        • Anonymous says:

Yes, a good time to start over is after intimidating witnesses so as to get away with murder. What was he doing at Nectar at that time then, carry a bible and trying to save lost souls?

          • Anonymous says:

You sound like you’re beyond perfect, tell me your secret?

You can’t expect a complete turn around, you can’t read his mind. Are you implying that people who go to nectar are all bad? He’s done wrong things, there is no excusing that, but you have no right to blame his family/parents, for one. I’ve seen stories where murderers become a Christian! I’m not saying that he was an angel, or even trying to be one- but your comment was so insensitive, bringing family into this as if they did not try to raise him right. Talking about him as if he was worthless. I know people that grow up around gang members and are completely different. I know of people who grew up in Churches and turned to gangs! He made bad choices, but at the end of the day, it’s between him and God. And if our community, non-gang members don’t change this whole “revenge” mentality, as if killing anyone is okay, then how will the gang members?

I am reading many comments that suggest we blame the parents. What I want to know is how can we do this if the person/criminal is an adult? I grew up in the same home as my sister and we turned out very different. I chose to go to college, earn a degree and work (in the US and in the Cayman Islands for numerous firms). My sister chose a very wayward path and even went to prison for a white collar crime. She had a child out of wedlock as well and did not go to a four year university. We both grew up in the same home with the same resources (my father is also an ordained minister who made us go to church, pray and read the bible). Maybe parents aren’t always to blame esp. if the person is an adult or maybe some kids don’t want to follow in their parents footsteps?

        • B says:

Youre the only person with sense on this whole comment section!

        • Anon says:

Um, because your upbringing as a child is imperative to becoming a decent and honest adult.

If your parents never teach you right from wrong, how to apologize and/or make a mends for wrong-doings or hurting others then you are raised with a sense of entitlement which makes you feel invincible and above others.

When you see someone who has zero regard for human life it’s pretty obvious they weren’t raised with any decency.

The problem here is that no one cares, not even their parents.. • Live free says:

You should have stopped after your first sentence!

Bla bla bla, blame game again!

Maybe you are deaf and dumb, but read this and let it sink in; PARENTS are solely to blame for their children. Not society, not the Government, not your neighbors, not the expats. YOU, and YOU alone.

Take responsibility for your piss-poor parenting skills. This guy probably sat down regularly and drank, smoked and played dominoes with his mother and other relatives. The youth ARE disconnected because YOU are disconnected as a parent!

Gear up for what? To interrupt the disposal of the other 3? If police hear they are in east End they should stall the car in WB. Why do good policemen or women have to put their life at risk to get in between this. Its only 3 left. So let them at it. From a tourism point of view, we just have to let them know they don’t have nothing to fear. In our little population its a matter of 10 little pants down little boys that are being suped up by some little idle baby girl that has 4 baby fathers and 3 in prison.
So now I got that off my chest.
Leave them alone. Let them get this over fast so we don’t have to ruin Christmas.

  30. Anonymous says:

We might not have Police like what we expect , but most of the problem lies with poor parenting. Most of the time its one parent that messes up. These kids are their own bosses and do as they please. The next thing is bad company. They should not be allowed to keep any and every company as kids after all there is a distinction between us. Some of these poor kids are practically growing up on their own. Their mothers never even prepare a good meal and have their kid or kids sit and eat. Not always the Dads to blame. Its too late after the cow gets out the pen. Some of these children are affected by the companion that either the mother or father chooses. Parents should never ever put a lover before their own children as most of the time they are resentful about this. Parents please take control of your children, don’t wait until they are grown to try to change them. Sympathy to all although I don’t even know who they are but just feel their pain.

These young people need a wake up call- see what a gun shot really does to the body- if one survives- a visit to the emergency room and see the blood and body parts-go visit the morgue – the smell. Maybe even one will “get it”! They also need mentors in the community starting at a young age.

It is our right to address some of the theses issues and try to contribute solutions. Each time we read the comments on CNS there is some negative comment thrown at the author or authors. In essence in order to agree or disagree we continue to post derogatory comments about each other. “Tit for Tat”. If we really value our fellow-resident we would come together and come up with meaningful recommendations on solutions to the problems. We are not leading by example and it is seen time and time again from some of the comments posted. Let us stay away from rivalry and embrace ideas and thoughts to assist with making our communities a safer place to live. Ultimately we are all affected by these violent acts. Have a good day all. let us pray for grieving families and for those who know something say something. The next victim could be your family member albeit even if they are innocent. finally let us pray that all Countries in the path of Matthew be spared the impact of what we experienced during Ivan.
