GT primary school renamed for retired principal

(CNS): George Town Primary School has been officially renamed the Sharon (Marie) Martin Primary School in honour of its retired principal. The naming was made official last week when politicians and educators held a special event honouring an educator who touched the lives of many children across several generations throughout her career on Cayman Brac as well as Grand Cayman.

One of her students was Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan, the MP for George Town Central, who recounted fond memories during his time spent under her care and guidance, describing her as a mentor and role model and “a true hero of education in our beloved country”.

He said that for decades, she “dedicated her life to shaping the minds and the futures of generations of Caymanian children. Her unwavering commitment, tireless efforts and passion for education have left an indelible mark on countless lives.”

Premier and Education Minister Juliana O’Connor-Connolly described her as a fellow educator, a fellow Cayman Bracker and a fellow Christian. “Truly, Marie has displayed at all material times that she is a servant leader,” the premier said.

Martin said she was humbled and honoured as she thanked those involved in naming the school after her. “For all of those who have been a part of my journey, and there have been many, I thank you all,” she added.

Quick to rename a school but slow to fix the failing education system. Sounds like Juju yes!!

I’m sorry, and no disrespect to Ms Sharon Marie and all the other people, but why do we insist on keep changing names of schools to people instead of the district or area they are in (as they used to be)? How much does this name changing cost the public purse, including printing materials, logos, publicity, etc? Does this mean parents have to fork out more money on fancy new uniforms?

Ms. Marie is wonderful and has done so much for the community since her retirement. She is on more than 2 boards focused on helping the youth of Cayman.

I wouldn’t want my name associated with George Town primary or with any other school here. The bar is so low it’s painful to watch😔😢

Can someone please articulate what and how juju has done to improve the quality of caymans education system? I can’t see it.

Long time overdue. Marie Martin has been the face of GTPS for many years. Unlike many of today’s teachers, she gave her all for the benefit of the children.
While it is shameful that the Ministry uses her ceremony to foolishly boast about “A World Class Education” (rather than a “Third World Education”) what they fail to realize is that stalwarts like Marie Martin are ‘world-class’ and are few and far between. Our failed leaders seem to be hell-bent on recruiting like-minded failures.
The private schools can however boast about being ‘world-class”.

I can think of one for the smith cove toilet block

Haha. And I suspect they probably have the Forever Honourable before their name

If we’re using MPs, you’d have to name individual wings for those found guilty…The McKeeva Bush Toilet Block, The Hon Kenny Bryan High Risk Unit, The Austin Harris Female Prison.
