Forbes’ Rio hopes end at the hurdle heats

(CNS): With a time of 14:67, Ronald Forbes was well short of his personal best and failed to qualify for the 110-metre hurdles semi-final on a very wet Monday night in Rio. Forbes, who was the last of the Cayman team to compete, ran in heat four and missed the torrential downpour which caused a 25-minute delay to the action after the second heat. His race was won by Konstadinos Douvalidis of Greece, who clocked 13:41, but a false start saw the French competitor, Wilhem Belocian, running in the lane next to Forbes, disqualified.
Given the heavy rain the athletes faced in the first two races, a decision was made for the eight non-qualifiers from those heats to race again in a final heat to try and qualify on time.
However, Forbes, who was in race four, wasn’t given a second chance. The 31-year-old had carried the flag for the Cayman team in the opening ceremony of the Games, and with a personal best this year of 13:26, which he ran in April, there had been high hopes that he would have made the semis in Rio.

If Ronald did have recent surgery on one of his legs and it affected his performance then that would explain his slow time, but he needs to stand up and explain why he ran so poorly.

I trust those that are so strongly against Cayman financially supporting our Olympic athletes offer the same advice to “White countries” that send their best every 4 years.
According to the twisted logic being spewed here on CNS, countries like Russia, Great Britain, Iceland, Norway, Holland, Germany, etc really ought to simply cancel all sprint aspects of their school and national sport programs … or at least limit to the melanated minority percentage of their population.
After all, when last have we seen a White sprint Champion? (I mean since Blacks were recognized as human beings and deemed worthy to represent western countries, of course.)
Actually, when last have we seen a non-Black 100m medalist for that matter?

I personally watched him last night and remembering the fact he has had surgeries recently to repair damage to his leg/legs I think he did great considering the fact he was one of the few who cleared all the hurdles without knocking any over. Good job Ronald !
It’s like the parable of the Emperor’s New Cothes. Forbes did well to qualify as an Olympian, but his performance in Rio was hugely disappointing. In the U.S. or Europe he would be roundly criticised, as by any armslength (non-Caymanian) standards his performance on the day was lamentable and brings into question his Government funding.

In my opinion the only people who can make a comment like that are those that can run it faster, that’s why ex-athletes make up the commentary teams….. You probably burned as many calories writing your comment as you did on everything else you did all day.

And exactly what is embarrassing about his performance. He made it to the OLYMPICS. Just to qualify is one of the greatest achievements that an athlete can ever hope for. If you have nothing nice to say, especially when someone has worked so hard to get where they are, please do not post something negative like this to degrade, humiliate and hurt another person. WELL DONE RONALD/CUZ we are so very proud of you, your accomplishments and representing the Cayman Islands on this International Platform.
