(CNS): Officers from the RCIPS Traffic and Roads Policing Unit are asking for witnesses to the fatal collision on Shamrock Road during the early hours of Sunday morning. Channah Connor (22), the niece of Deputy Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, was alone in the car when she was killed in the single-vehicle crash. Police believe she lost control of the car, which was headed west, and hit a wall.

Investigators are seeking information surrounding the circumstances of this incident, and witnesses are asked to call the Traffic and Roads Policing Unit at 649-6254 or the George Town Police Station at 949-4222. Anonymous tips can be provided to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, or the website.

The Cayman Islands driving test is not fit for purpose. Allowing anyone, let alone our young people, behind the wheel of a car with our wholly inadequate license is foolish and irresponsible. Whilst CIG continues to ignore the fact that many, many drivers in Cayman fall well below the standard required to drive a car anywhere else in the world, these pointless deaths will continue.

I don’t know the circumstances of this crash at all and nor do I mean to imply them but what kind of message does CIG/RCIPS think that an MP can drive his car up a CUC pole late at night without being breathalized send out, in particular to young people?

The RTA deaths per capita in Cayman are 7.5 TIMES worse than the UK despite; much lower speed limits, much shorter distances driven, mostly better roads, much better weather and never being more than 10 minutes from a hospital. The elephant in the room is the woeful standard of driving, the bare minimum of which is determined by the driving test.

    RIP young lady.

So sad, this life cut far too short. Rest in Peace, Channah. You are loved by so many.

Don’t care about the circumstances of the crash. You are gone from us, and nothing will change that.

You should care about the circumstances of the crash, a lot. If knowing the circumstances helps stop one person from taking the wheel after a drink, or putting their foot down on the accelerator to speed past a slower car then it’s absolutely worth it. (for the record, I am not suggesting either of these were factors in this accident)

You should care about the circumstances of the crash. I for one do not know the details, but as she was ejected from the vehicle (as reported), it’s a fair assumption to say that she probably wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. If she had been, perhaps she would still be alive today.

There is a reason that it is mandatory to wear seatbelts, because it saves lives. Lets stop offering thoughts and prayers and asking Jesus to take the wheel and instead start educating about and enforcing this simple life-saving requirement.

Make sure your friends and family are wearing their seatbelts in a vehicle, you might be saving their lives.
