Temporary LPH layout to ease jams as work continues
(CNS): A new temporary road layout along the Linford Pierson Highway is now in effect in an effort to ease the traffic jams there as construction work on the widening project continues. Officials said this should offer some relief from the traffic tailbacks until the new lanes and larger roundabout is finished, which is expected to be next summer. The overall project involves widening the road from two to six lanes between Agnes Way Roundabout and the lights at the Bobby Thompson Way-Smith Road junction.
The project is seen as a major part of easing the traffic congestion for commuters travelling between George Town and the Eastern Districts, where the sheer volume of traffic going through the Red Bay and Grand Harbour areas, the narrowest point in Grand Cayman, has created unprecedented traffic jams.
Motorists are advised to take extra care when passing through the construction area and to keep up to date with any possible interruptions to the routine traffic flow within that area as the work rolls on over the next year.

Fully convinced unna could put down 6 lanes each side and we’d still bottleneck.
Fk it, I’m buying a motorcycle too and going down the centre lane.
Before unna say I crazy for riding here, I’m already losing my mind and money sitting in traffic burning gas 2 hours minimum a day.
Buy a deltaplane, it will be safer. Take off from the Dump.
I’ve been stuck on the Hurley’s roundabout for 3 weeks, where do i turn off? Pls send food and tell my family i’m alive but lonely and cannot take much more of the new radio channel from herself!
Hurley’s offers delivery!
Big Wow! All roads lead to bottlenecks at NAPA, Smith Road and Huldah Avenue! Expanded carriageways only serve to bring drivers to those bottleneck areas a bit more quickly.
CONSISTENT and RELIABLE public transport is the real answer!
The work to make Cayman Islands easier for ignorant drivers continue.
What ever happened to that simple North Church Street to Eastern Ave extension? They have cleared land, ripped up the ground and partially put some foundation.
But construction has been stopped for months. I would not likely ever use that road….but it has just stopped. Not a peep.
bobby thompson expansion took 11 years…so just be patient!
Joey Street? Was never needed.
Government might be having disputes with homeowners around there. Maybe some of them don’t want to move. It happens often when a road project is stalled, in fact, the Bobby Thompson project was stalled cause there was a dispute with the person who owns that horse stable nearby!
Yes probably stalled by the owners refusing to move because they were offered a miserly amount of compensation.
The Hurley’s roundabout continues to be a confusing mess, and now they’ve add two more lanes going onto it coming from town. Stop adding lanes and fix our bus system! That’ll bring cars off the road.
That roundabout serves no functional purpose and should be removed entirely.
Actually, no, 3.39 pm: I drove through the Hurley’s roundabout last night and twice today and was vastly relieved. There is now no doubt which lane crosses over into which lane. I travelled in the left lane going east past Lions Centre and the layout naturally led me to the middle lane. I am so relieved. Up to now I was avoiding the middle lane and veering over to the leftmost lane bordering Hurley’s to avoid the possibility of collision with vehicles in the fight lane past lions Centre who seemed to think the middle lane was theirs. Now they will know how to properly navigate the roundabout, like it or not.
I am singing the Hallelujah Chorus as I travel through the roundabout. It is much, much better. I am R E L I E V E D. Biggest improvement on the roads and I am experiencing it like the gift that it is. THANK YOU!
I just go up the left turn lane and force my way to the right as I come to the roundabout. Makes a world of difference.
11:45 am, I have to say I don’t understand what you are talking about. This must be prior to the new layout.
Here’s the gen: If you are continuing east after the roundabout, the best option is to take the left lane past Lions and stay there. It will take you naturally into the middle lane as you cross. No more fighting necessary.
You should probably seek driving lessons…
Am I the only one who thinks this temporary layout has made things much worse? Coming from Fairbanks at 8am and the queue is way past L’Ambiance now (I never had this issue before the new layout). A drive which usually takes 10mins for me is now 45mins – utterly ridiculous.
I now have to leave 20 minutes earlier…at 7:40 or I will be in bumper to bumper traffic with NO ONE coming for the LPH allowing you to get out. It is the MOST frustrating thing…and don’t ask about the 5pm traffic with all the cars in the right lane…until the last minute when they cross over to the left!!! We need police out there every single day….total cluster!!!!
Exactly. Why are both lanes of traffic coming from the East making a right turn at that roundabout?
Only the right Lane coming from the East should be turning right, allowing those coming from Fairbanks heading to town to enter the roundabout in the left lane.
4:54 pm: I agree. One lane would give the traffic coming up from Fairbanks a little reprieve. I try to slow as I approach from Linford Pierson to give the traffic coming up a chance but if the vehicle in the other lane doesn’t stop you know what will happen. I see this every day.
The left lane from
Linford Pierson should be left for traffic turning off to Fairbanks area and allow the traffic coming into the roundabout from Fairbanks some room to navigate.
This is the only reasonable solution!
Roundabout causes traffic because the person with the right of way doesn’give a dam about the other driver , so stoplights are the best thing
Thats how traffic flows. Please don’t be the idiot that stops in the middle of one to let someone in. That is dangerous and backs up traffic.
It’s illegal to come to a stop in a roundabout. All these clowns that do this to let people go are actually breaking the law.
If you have to stop then you shouldn’t be entering it to begin with.
Say this louder for the people at the back. absolutely cannot stand people who stop on the roundabout to giveway…. in what world does that make sense.
You are the problem.
Why?
Imagine how people felt living in prospect. A drive that should take 10 minutes to get into town has been taking us 45 minutes or more in the morning and even more time in the evenings. You all are only just now feeling the pain we have been dealing with for the last three years. suck it up buttercup.
Charming!
Also, Agnes Way to turn left onto LPH. One of the idiot specials is jumping into the right lane to turn left. Just no. It is rare, but one day someone will correctly go straight in that lane and wipe out the BMW/Honda/Audi cutting across them. Police need to ticket these fools trying to jump ahead in traffic.
How is it that the markings of the roundabouts here are so messed up??? These things just reinforce a lack of understanding for those who have no idea how roundabouts work.
The two lanes from LPH that take you past Kings and Burger Shack kiosk…it is a right turn, pretty much 90 degrees. So why is it marked as straight on? This encourages the idiots to keep on using the left lane to go right on other roundabouts.
Same on this new layout. LPH to Bobby Thompson, it’s straight apparently. If that’s true the opposite must surely be true, however it’s not, because as common sense dictates, it is actually left turn.
Just paint the right frickin arrows. It’s not hard!
need a double lane on the bypass towards savannah.
How about a stop light on Hirst Rd at the bypass. It is a complete blank show as it stands.
Until either or both of major land reclamation in North Sound and/or bridge between Hirst Road and new Dump bypass area, we will never, never, ever, ever see the end of the traffic issues.
Yes, both are very costly and come with the usual environmental objectors (Where were you during covid and all the plastic we’ve been throwing away in past2 years) BUT it is the only fix.
As for where the money comes from? It may have escaped you, but we live in the worlds 5th largest financial territory. Incredible but true. THere’s enough money here to and enough brains to work it out whether by issuing bonds in a PPI hybrid or many other easy debt issuing options. We also have residents here that could pay for it all out of their back pocket.
All we need is the will of the people. Otherwise, it will only ever get worse. The shape of the Island and the location of the main central business and industrial districts makes this.
The answer to all of this is simply to close Crewe Road to all but local traffic from 6:30am to 6:30pm on weekdays.
Just put two arms at the Kings roundabout and force everyone on the roads which were built specifically for that purpose. Take the roundabout out of play and everything will flow smooth as a baby’s bottom.
until you get to hurleys round about
Remove it.
Um, there are businesses on crewe rd that people need to visit. That is a very dumb idea. You must be on the board of the NRA.
Um, that falls well within “local access”, if you really need to go to the Mini-mart during those hours.
Don’t you think the police should be doing something other than checking papers to see if you should be on crewe road or not? It’s a stupid idea.
Read it again. Slowly this time, in an effort to also comprehend.
And you think people that don’t even follow the basic road laws are going to be on a trust system to not go down crewe road. Lol. I think you need to maybe take a deep breath and start slowly thinking things through first.
It should have read 6:30am-9:30am and 4:00pm-6:30pm to be fair, so you can still get your cowfoot from Amelia’s if you really require that much lunch.
Every blooming thing… Drs…. Power flower. It was a dumb suggestion to limit a road. A better suggestion is no construction vehicles on the roads from 6:30-9-30a and 4:30-6p
No it wasn’t
School busses cause more traffic issues than construction vehicles.
My personal favorite is the drivers seeing someone they know or would like to know and just stopping in the road half assedly forcing head on collisions as vehicles and bicyclists try to get by.
It’ll be next summer that it’s finished? Did I read that correctly?? 1 year to finish?
Which in truth, means December 2024 at best.
How’s the airports connector road coming along? Asking for those of us who work in the Industrial Park.
Years and years to build. It’s insane. Apparently they screwed something up from an engineering perspective but it’s hard to imagine why it’s taking so long even in that case.
That’s quick, the new link road ending on N Church St was started a year ago and is now only 10% complete. Cardinal Ave is just as bad but it should be ready for the start of the hurricane season.
That amount of time you could build a road from one end of the island to the other.
Or an undersea tunnel to the Brac.
You could also pave every single road in North Side in that time…
How about a proper, Bermuda-styled ferry system (large ferries with enclosed, weather-protected air-conditioned seating).
Sure we have the experimental Cayman ferry. But it is tiny, largely exposed to the elements, and not really practical for day to day use, especially if working in an office. And its $12 each way.
I lived in Bermuda for a couple years and the ferry system works great. Bermuda also has proper, real-world busses with a time-tabled schedule and routes (not like the cramped Cayman mini-vans).
They are Jamaican (not Caymanian) mini vans, but I take your point.
Go back to Bermuda then if it’s so damn great.
Ah yes the typical leave if you hate how ass backwards we are here comment.
Go west…….always a nice leisurely drive home.
lmao traffic soon return to west with all those fast build complexes built for PR
Dart’s got more plans for the land by the lovely new road too, so YES, we in the west can kiss the easy commute soon too.
Do tell us more. What are Dart’s plans for that area?
Can’t help but wonder how they managed to fix that old issue. Who was it that devised those plans?
Someday we will run out of land if we keep building roads, making the place more hotter. I believe if there is vision, the focus will not be on roads. Traffic will still worsen as population increases.
Companies should re-visit WFH, where possible. Also, allow for staggered work start/stop times. Surely not everyone has to be at work between 8-9am. Especially those who don’t have kids at school.
Cayman is so old school that way. Every worker must start warming their seats at 8:30 am and not leave until at least 5pm or else the world will end.
Especially in certain government offices, who should set an example with regards to staggered hours, but do not even let staff come in earlier than 8:30 even when they don’t deal with the public.
I could not agree more! I would suggest allow employees to work from home from 8:30am – 10am, then they can go into the office at 10am (if necessary). I don’t see why everyone should be in an office by 8:30/9am, it makes no sense.
Why not try this excellent idea for a week or two? It cannot make the congestion worse.
Anything that can be done to ease the traffic congestion is much appreciated. That said, I wonder if the increased number of people in isolation is having the greater positive impact.
We do still need to look at staggered work hours, remote work days and other strategies to adequately deal with the traffic issues going forward.
Cruise ship passengers shouldn’t be allowed on our shores before 9:00am when everyone is trying to get to work at the same time. No point in building new roads if this continues. I’m glad to see that the East-West Arterial Road in the Grand Harbour/Red Bay Area is a lot less congested now, but for what? Only to get stuck in the same place for 5 minutes on South Church Street?
Should have stopped after your first nine words.
cruise tourists one year become stayover tourists the following year. after we take your advice an ban them, we can watch Cayman fall behind in tourism against our Caribbean neighbours.
No, they don’t.
Citations needed.
5 whole minutes. Whaaa.
12.44pm It’s actually 40 mins on South Church St since retrun of Cruisers and they closed Cardinal Ave.
That’s not what I meant. I meant literally not being able to move for 5 minutes.
Would help if people used indicators on roundabouts.
esp the police farce
Alric and Jay should really take a drive down Bobby Thompson this evening if they think they have done anything to help. Quite the opposite.
Bullshit. This “temporary relief” has made things 10 times worse than prior.
so cig is making it easier for more cars to be on the roads while failing to improve public transport.??? traffic will be worse than ever in 18 months.
welcome to wonderland….
this will help somewhat…but yet again cig again cannot see the overall picture when it come to traffic management, p[ublic transport…..etc
