Driver badly hurt after light pole collision
(CNS): A man was taken to hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning with serious injuries after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a light pole on Mangrove Avenue in Prospect at about 3am. Police said the vehicle was travelling north when it veered off the roadway into a fence and then collided with the utility pole, cutting power to many residents.
No other vehicles were involved and the driver was the only occupant. He remains at the George Town Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. The road was closed during the morning commute in the busy community as police carried out investigations.
The crash comes less than two weeks after another a man in a BMW was trapped and badly injured after hitting a light-pole on Walkers Road and less than a month after the driver of a black Honda was killed when his car collided with a fence column on Mangrove Avenue, the street parallel to today’s smash.
Four people have already been killed on Cayman roads this year and several more have been badly hurt as a result of the significant number of collisions every day.

The answer to speeding is simple. As the maximum limit is 50 mph install a governor on all cars on the island so they do not do more than say 60. With the marl trucks limit them further.

I know an incredible amount of accidents happen here. I sometimes think these islands are cursed in that respect. BUT I want to reassure the commenters on here, especially the heartless desensitized ones that some “Accidents” are just that. Not everyone is intoxicated, not everyone is speeding. Some people are tired, they take their eyes off the road for a SECOND of distraction, they have medical events, etc etc. In true definition of the word, it is ACCIDENTAL. What always remains true is that it is A LIFE and their loved ones lives that will forever be changed due to fatal or serious injuries.
People I implore you to have a little compassion, empathy understanding. “Nothing good to say, don’t say it”. Leave the judgement to a higher power or at least someone less flawed and more aware than we are. Stay blessed cold world.
I saw a guy in s truck speeding down marina drive…at least 100 mph last week…why no speed bumps there…it residential…..oh they say big trucks go thru there..big trucks go down dump road also..yet huge speed bumps to slow them down????

Its not just Honda drivers that are reckless.
I was trying for years, even had the support of Harbour House Marina at the top. They’re not bothered, ended up moving as my house was hit 6 times in 5 years.

I’ve heard that NRA a re considering speed bumps along NWP road in West Bay! Absurd!!
There are 2 schools located there – simply install crosswalks, and 15 mph “school zones”, please!!
You’re kidding yourself if you think West Bay speed racers would slow down for crosswalks and school zones.
Cayman has magical power poles. They always manage to attract special types of drivers. Perhaps it is the silver Hondas that especially are attracted to our power poles. Whaddaya all think?
Instead of speed bumps which modern cars / trucks can handle we should put a barrier half way across the road then another one on the other side just a little further down to make a sort of chicane. One direction of traffic has priority over the other and vice versa.
I know you cant do it on all roads becasue of trucks but seen it work well in UK
Wish the MLA for SOUTH SOUND would have some speed bumps installed on Academy Way and Aspiration drive! Cars speed through there regularly and with a public track, two churches and three schools it’s crowded with kids and families. Don’t leave it till someone is killed, Barbara!
The road UCCI is on has speed bumps. But not the roads that are most populated with children and families.
Wish people would just make the requests to the actual organization responsible for the work (NRA) rather than perpetuating a dependency relationship with their MLAs…
The number of single vehicle accidents on this island is staggering.
So is the number of people staggering out of bars, restaurants and parties then attempting to drive their vehicles.
Those numbers are directly proportionate to Cayman’s unchecked party culture, rampant alcoholism, and permissive attitudes towards impaired driving, and not just at 3am. It’s not even an educational deficit because there are countless professional afternoon work and golf socials where bulk of the accredited attendees should not have driven themselves home.
I hate it when those stupid lights poles jump in from of cars. Can’t the CIG do something?
It is driver little brain cell is not working so don’t blame light poles as they don’t have legs!

Are you kidding? Drunk driving is part of the cayman culture. Want to stop it?…Demand that the RCIPS do something. Until then, let’s figure out how to get these dang poles to stop jumping on or in front of cars.
This is the same street, Mangrove Avenue, on which the fatal accident occurred last month. The MP for Prospect arranged for a number of speed humps to be installed on this road shortly after that accident.

Speed bumps were put in on Mangrove after the accident a few weeks ago. Made no difference on this occasion.
The RCIP today announced that beginning April 1st. They will commence Operation Bright Light. Motorist are advised to avoid all streets that have light poles as they pose a significant danger to motorists. Extra patrols will be out in Prospect as they seem to be especially pesky in the area. The operation will run until 30 June when all trouble making light poles have been identified and warned. – Sound like anything you’ve heard before🤔🤔🤔🤔
I do hope they are so badly injured they’ll never be able to operate a vehicle again. When I lost my son to a reckless driver he never offered up an apology and is driving to this day.

If only we had a police force. If we did we could remove these people from circulation before they could do harm to themselves or others.

I’m surprised that CUC don’t claim that the loss of hundreds of light poles each year are partly responsible for the high cost of their electricity.
You and I pay for those poles, trust me.
CUC rents out pole space to the various telecom companies. It’s a gift that keeps giving.
Even though this challenging one was located behind a fence, we really ought to get some crews to concrete these public menace poles into the ground so they stop jumping out in front of cars. Maybe get the NRA to build an armco fortress around each one…just so long as we don’t have to talk about addressing ritual impaired driving, or spank the absentee RCIPS, or get DCI to pull any liquor licenses. Hope this person recovers sufficiently to make their own course correction.
