Phase 1 of the Airport Connector Road between the Esterley Tibbetts Highway and Sparky Drive

(CNS): The National Roads Authority is busy building roads all over Grand Cayman but the $800,000 contract awarded to Dart over two years ago to build the first phase of the airport connector road from the Esterley Tibbetts Highway to Sparky Drive in the Industrial Park area remains stalled.

After persistent inquiries by CNS, NRA officials said Monday, “The delay in the completion of segment one is attributed to procurement in connection with the installation of culverts along the road. This is being addressed and construction is now estimated to be completed by the fourth quarter of this year.”

But according to the government’s procurement site, the culvert contract, which is worth around $230,00, was awarded to Core & Main in February of last year and there is no indication that the tender was cancelled or has since been re-run.

Since the contract was originally awarded to Dart in February 2020, the government has also issued around ten different tender requests for rock and fill. Those contracts have been awarded to multiple contractors amounting to about $1.5 million.

    2024 General Election hurry up.

This will be done the same way all things are done here and there should be no surprise in it. It will not go smoothly. It will not be on time or on budget. Some Caymanians will profit greatly and Dart will most likely end up doing it just to get it done and he will not make much if any profit. This is the best anyone living here can hope for. Very much like third world to anyone not from a third world island.

From the recent “news” on CMR, that paragon of truth in reporting, it looks like it was going to cost Dart more than they calculated to build the road (after being awarded the contract!) so PACT is putting back out to tender with no penalty for Dart.

The tendering process is utterly ridiculous! Discourages people from even taking the time to do it.

What a scenic view our visitors will get driving behind industrial park and the landfill. Such a warm welcome. (Sarcasm)

More ministerial interference? Sounds like someone wants to re-award the contract illegally !!

  7. Just Asking says:

Have the landowners been paid any compensation yet? And NRA published any minutes yet?

Who, for God’s sake, is the head engineer at NRA? Is there one?

Where is all the “rock and fill” coming from for all these road and other developments? Is it leaving giant holes and ponds in the eastern part of the island?

    • Anonymous says:

Lots of that rock and fill is coming from Cayman Brac. They are eating up this island like they dont care about future generations. Pitiful and disgraceful!

Where is that middle roundabout going?

“The NRA is busy building roads all over Cayman” – what about the connector that ends up at North Church St?, nothing has happened in the last 12 months since the initial work was done.

Miraculously started just before the election and nothing since. Joey Who?

You are right. Where are all these roads they are building? All I See is incomplete road projects. Has any5ing new been completed I. The last two years?

The NRA only paved the west side of West Bay Road from Captains Bakery north to Ritz, and then abandoned the job. They then spent two Saturdays drilling and pounding unnecessary armco pilings into northbound lane south of Cost U less…like that’s going to do anything to beautify the area or make them safer.

Let’s nauseate our first impression guests with a brisk tour past the concrete plants, sewage pits, and landfill. Maybe we could get an animatronic Rosa Harris Dragon to belch some fireballs at the minibuses.

Didn’t you know, it’s a new scenic route through Cayman’s latest tourist attraction? It’s where we get to show off our well fettered $hit to the world. We should be proud as it took millions of dollars in consulting contracts to create this unique attraction.

Even 20 years ago, on my 1st trip to Cayman, I was so upset driving thru the industrial park on my way to my hotel.i questioned where the heck I just landed. I honestly was very nervous until I hit the 7mb strip area. Then, after a week of visiting areas of Rum Point, South Sound, the drive to West Bay, meeting wonderful people then I found the beauty of Cayman. I have been back many times since, year after year. On my last trip, not liking the massive construction, the tunnel, the high rise buildings and the traffic. Still love the people!

It’s not meant to be a scenic route, but to alleviate the traffic coming out of North Sound Rd. Anyone that works down in industrial park could tell you how bad the traffic gets there in the afternoon and evening. I think that has to be a worse experience for tourists than driving past dump. I’ve been waiting for a long time for this road to open up and alleviate the traffic back there, so at the very least I’ll be able to get to happy hour quicker to avoid the mess going east.
