Over 1,600 new voters register ahead of April election

(CNS): The Elections Office is working on the validation process for more than 1,600 people who registered to vote between the beginning of October and 15 January. They are also working on 900 more change forms, many relating to constituency changes. The office has so far processed around 2,500 forms but said there are a few hundred more outstanding applications, some of which remain incomplete. Voters are now urged to contact the office if they have not heard back since submitting their forms.

Those contacted are being urged to provide the required documents as soon as possible to avoid having their applications rejected. A revised preliminary list is expected to be published at the end of this week, which will then be open for public scrutiny.

The office said it had received a high volume of emails and is still processing submissions from 15 January. Members of the public who submitted voter registration or change of address forms or had voter registration-related queries on or before this date and have not received a response are encouraged to contact the office by phone immediately at 244-5400 or 949-8047.

As of 1 January, there were 23,829 voters, and with about 1,600 more voters, the electoral roll will stand at well over 25,000 voters on Election Day. While that represents the most voters in Cayman’s history, there are still estimated to be thousands of people qualified to register who have not opted to join in the democratic process.

I suggest the following changes for candidates
    – maximum age of 60 and no business affiliation.
    – IQ test score above 130
    – Pay will be minimum wage
    – one term only
    For the voters:
    – minimum IQ of 100, ruling out religious freaks
    – certain level of education
    – test of knowledge of the outside world
    – right to vote for work permit holders after one year

And finally of course get rid of these stupid 5000 districts, and change to a national vote.
A minimum of 3 parties to choose from, and candidates are not allowed to switch over for their convenience.

    It makes no difference.
Governor is letting Ju-Ju and her cohorts breach the constitution

    The Cabinet
44.—(1) There shall be a Cabinet in and for the Cayman Islands, which shall consist of—
    (a) a Premier appointed by the Governor in accordance with section 49(2) or (3);
    (b) six other Ministers, one of whom shall be Deputy Premier, appointed by the Governor,
acting in accordance with the advice of the Premier, from among the elected members of
    the Legislative Assembly; and
    (c) the Deputy Governor and the Attorney General, ex officio.
    (2) The number of Ministers referred to in subsection (1) may be increased by a law made pursuant
to section 60(2) which increases the number of elected members of the Legislative Assembly; but
in no circumstances may the number of Ministers exceed two-fifths of the total number of elected
    members of the Assembly.
    (3) The Cabinet shall have responsibility for the formulation of policy, including directing the
implementation of such policy, insofar as it relates to every aspect of government except those
matters for which the Governor has special responsibility under section 55, and the Cabinet shall be
collectively responsible to the Legislative Assembly for such policies and their implementation.
    (4) Subject to this Constitution, the Cabinet shall determine its own procedures for the conduct
    of its business.

Cab Sec Rose should not allow cabinet to sit as you are aiding in a breach of the constitution.
Next step is to bring this to the UK governments attention.
    Governor is doing naught
    AG naught
    Cab Sec naught

Lol … you would really be surprised to realise that more of our North American, European and British residents who have received PR since 2010 are now Caymanian and far more interested in voting than the few Jamaicans who got status after the mass grants of 2003.

Just take a look at any of the prominent Law or Accounting or Compliance firms, and you will see all the new Caymanians who have been added and/or their now adult children

Thousands of Jamaicans have become Caymanian, but that doesn’t suit your narrative, does it?

    Plenty of voters,
    no one to vote for.

I admit I questioned the ‘need’ to hold off the next election until the current voter registration period ended. (You turn 18, you register; there can’t be that many unregistered who will register went my naive thinking.) But that many new voters – equivalent to their own voting district – shows it was right to do so.

  6. Protect our democracy says:

True democracy is powered by the people. It is not enough to vote and complain. People need to get together, look at the money, look at the projects, look at the laws and pinpoint where the problems are. Then we take those observations to the MPS, who then take it to Parliament. We are not doing that; we leave too much of the decision making to the politicians, then we wonder why they act they way they do? If those 25,000 registered voters start doing their job, the ones who do not care enough to register should have nothing to say about national decisions.

  7. Change says:

We urgently need a Petition to change OMOV. What Cayman requires is a national vote. We need to be able to elect the best for the country, not the least mediocre in the constituency.

it is all for nothing when you prevent the most qualified and successful people on island from being elected…
    welcome to wonderland.

19 separate constituencies with this population is ridiculous. One man one vote does not work.
Representatives running as independents does not form a strong government.
Properly established and registered political parties are needed term after term. Not this slop we are presented with each vote.

So only a quarter of the population votes on who will be in charge ?
Of which 80% is uneducated, can’t read or write, and really believes in Adam and Eve.

    Good luck Cayman

Where do these new voters reside? I doubt on CB or LC so this likely further increases the fairness discrepancy. Change the constitution so it truly is one person one vote and equal representation for Cayman’s voters.

And whose status applications appear to have been processed more expeditiously than their South Sound and Crystal Harbour counterparts.

If all eligible voters in CB and LC are registered, it may be something to consider, but if a significant number choose not to register, then it is their decision. Take it up with them.
