Bryan hints at a return to Progressives’ platform

Kenneth Bryan on Radio Cayman

(CNS): Few of the remaining members of the UPM government have confirmed they will be seeking re-election in the upcoming campaign or which of their colleagues, if any, they will be aligning themselves with. However, Deputy Premier Kenneth Bryan has dropped the heaviest hints yet that he may throw his lot in with the Progressives, the party he started his political career with, as he runs again to keep his George Town Central seat. So far, the idea has not been dismissed by the PPM.

During an appearance on Radio Cayman on Monday, Bryan said he believed that the PPM was the only real political party contesting the election and the group with which he was most politically aligned.

Speaking on For The Record on Monday, he made allegations that the members of the TCCP were “extreme environmentalists” and another party due to emerge were “elitists” who had stated they wanted to replace “the inferiors”. He said he felt he shared a mindset most with the Progressives.

“No matter what differences that we’ve had, there is more mindsets with the things that I think about with the Progressives than any one of those other groups… because it was more personalities,” he said as he pointed to his past disagreements with former premier Sir Alden McLaughlin. “But that’s where I came from.”

Bryan suggested that the PPM and the UDP (it was not clear if the minister actually meant the UPM) had many similarities. He suggested that they were never about “big money” or extreme environmentalists but were about the grassroots or the poorer people.

He said he believed the next government would be a coalition between two of the four groups that he thinks will be running in April: the PPM, the leftover UPM government, the “extreme environmentalists” (the TCCP), and the “elitists”, which appears to refer to the newly registered Cayman Islands National Party. Dan Scott has registered the party but has not yet officially launched it or unveiled its candidates.

At the start of the show, Bryan had said that, given the drift towards alignments and parties in this election, he had to make some decisions about how he was going to run, having previously run as an independent. However, he said he would need to consult with his constituents.

Challenging the nature of the newly registered groups, the minister claimed they were not real parties but labels. He said the country was looking for organised, mature politics, and the only group that fit the real definition and had real credibility was the PPM.

Roy Tatum, a long-standing member of the Progressives who will run for office in the former premier’s constituency of Red Bay once the party ratifies this, pointed out that Bryan had never resigned from the PPM.

“Politics is the art of the possible,” he told CNS when we asked where the PPM stood regarding Bryan re-joining forces with the party. “Kenneth Bryan started his political career with the PPM and never resigned as a member,” he noted, leaving the door open for Bryan to buy himself a red tie or two.

See Bryan talk about his potential alignment with the Progressives at 1:04:45, shortly after he joins the show, and again at the end of the show from about 2:29:45 on the Radio Cayman video below.

What has the PPM ever done for George Town Central?

If you check the national statistics – the numbers receiving assistance from NAU were highest between 2013 to 2021 during PPM’s 2 consecutive terms.

One would dare say this points to less opportunity being available for Caymanians under their Governance.

For example, in 2016, 2018 and 2019, there were 1,109, 1,009 and 888 (respectively) of people receiving food vouchers. Compared to 2021, 2022 and 2023 when there were 643, 650 and 721 (respectively) families receiving food vouchers.

This trend follows on through the statistics with rental assistance, electricity and other utility assitance.

Welfare for the Caymanian population was at an all time high during PPM’s tenure and that is what gave rise to the people voting them out.

Hopefully our people do not have too much of the usual short-term memory here and not remember the struggles, cries for help, unemployment and disenfranchisement taking place during the PPM years.

Here is the link to the statistics which can also be found on ESO website. https://www.eso.ky/storage/right_page_docums/uploadFilePdf/422/Chapter%204%20-%20Health%20and%20Social%20Services.xlsx

Very dishonest post. You took the Food Voucher data to make a point but ignored the overall totals which included total assistance (Food vouchers, rent, Electricity, Water Bills etc etc) Those totals were:

      2016 – 2,049 families
      2018 – 2,059 families
      2021 – 1,783 families
      2022 – 2,591 families
      2023 – 2,662 families

Which shows that under the PACT administration Needs Assesment Assistance increased by almost 10%

You are tntiled to your opinion bt your opinion is not fact!!!

Those totals which you have posted include burial expenses, pre-school fees and unspecified supplemental assistance which does not necessarily provide a true state of affairs with how Caymanians are living. Whereas, looking at whether our people are in need of food more each year certainly shows where the desperation lies – and when.

Take the statistics how you wish – but the state of hunger in any country is a sure show of the state of its most vulnerable.

You also omitted to include the total of families for 2021, which was the lowest ever recorded over the 10 year period at 1,783 families (if we must take the total in to account).

  8. They wear shoes that are too big for them and get their laces tangled says:

I am reading “The Almost Nearly Perfect People” book by Michael Booth.

Can’t help but think about Cayman reading “The Icelanders” chapter. About Cayman’s past. Its future. The current state of Cayman.

Below are few excerpts from the book. Do you see the parallel with the Cayman? It could have been written about Cayman.

The Iceland’s Achilles heel. In a country of just over 300,000 people, everyone knows each other personally or through mutual acquaintances, and the ruling class is a small clique.

“Only yesterday, Icelanders were sitting waist-deep in fish scales, and today they are already choosing options for their new Porsche Cayennes with an important air.”

“Stories of local excess abound. Elton John flew in to sing a song at a birthday party ; private jets were called in like taxis;”

With the collapse of the American investment bank Lehman Brothers in late 2008, Icelandic debts, at one point amounting to 850 percent of the country’s GDP (by comparison, in the US it is 350 percent), became public knowledge. …The government had no money to cover its bank debts.

Within weeks, unemployment had soared (previously, anyone who wanted a job had been able to do so, except the mentally retarded and the maliciously idle).

The crisis, it seems, was a crime without criminals. Standing trial… on charges of negligence, Haarde became the first world-class political leader to be called to account for what happened in 2008. He could have faced up to two years in prison for his role in the massive financial fraud that devastated Iceland, but was found not guilty.

Once a city famed for its stunning views of the fjord and mountains on the horizon, these were now obscured by the office and apartment towers that had sprung up along the coast. The new, beautiful, and uninhabited buildings resembled a stack of jewel cases that had just been stolen by thieves.

(Icelanders still have to import everything except electricity and fish),

… the history of the country…turned out to be quite gloomy…

… everything about Iceland – from its debt spree to the rudeness of its men and, most gallantly, the homeliness of its women…. concluded that Iceland is a patriarchal society of aggressive men who are prone to excessive risk.

Previously, Icelanders fished like everyone else: they went out on boats and tried their luck. Some days they returned empty-handed, others with a splendid catch. But in 1983, after several years of severe weather that had been particularly bad for the fishing industry, the Icelandic government decided to introduce a quota system.

“The first quota holders got rich overnight. Eventually, all the quotas ended up in the hands of about 15 private companies with deliberately confusing ownership structures. And then their owners started shifting the profits from the fisheries to the banking sector.”

“Critics were branded as people who were incapable of enjoying success. These businessmen demonstratively financed science, public buildings, museums, festivals and everything else.”

“I don’t think the Icelandic bankers did anything radically different from the foreign banks. But the thing is, they adopted all these methods superficially, didn’t understand them, and then they started doing something completely unimaginable, like cross-lending. I watched them and was amazed at how these guys just borrowed and borrowed and never seemed to sell anything except to themselves. They didn’t put their capital on the line.”

Of all the Nordic characters, the most striking contrast to the Icelanders is their direct ancestors, the Norwegians. They nursed their oil wealth with the care and attention of a gardener with orchids. The Icelanders, like magpies, snatched up every glittering foreign asset that caught their eye. Football clubs, hotels and department stores were bought with borrowed money, obtained with the recklessness of Antonio in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice .

They still feel like Vikings who are on first-name terms with everyone. Since childhood, they have been told: “We are a small country, but we are equal to anyone.” Iceland is a small person who thinks that he is an important person….“They wear shoes that are too big for them and get their laces tangled.”

“The Icelanders of that era were people who demanded respect for their rights and did not want to be told what to do.

In early 2009, Michael Lewis described Iceland as “completely bankrupt”. …But who was to blame for the economic mess?

The Gudmundssons were among about fifteen families who earned the collective nickname “The Octopus” for the stranglehold they had on much of the Icelandic economy. Some of them fled the country in disgrace, while the rest prefer to keep a low profile.

Many of these politicians and businessmen were close friends from school … and spent their free time together. This is a prime example of Iceland’s Achilles heel. In a country of just over 300,000 people, everyone knows each other personally or through mutual acquaintances, and the ruling class is a small clique.

“These loans [made by Icelandic banks to their shareholders to boost their own share portfolios] are another sordid reminder of how corrupt things are here,”… “This is such a small country that businessmen, regulators, media and politicians all get along just fine.”

“To understand how a person ended up working for this company, it is enough to look at his political connections,” … “If it is not politics, then look for relatives, and if there is none, then there is only one explanation: Alcoholics Anonymous! This is a very compact country, so nepotism and cronyism flourish there, which have become part of the general economic problem. Friends from the sports section or relatives are hired. Here it is all over the place, and we are so used to it that we do not call it corruption. It is very difficult to avoid such things, and if it comes to justice, then serious problems arise.”

A good example of the close intertwining of state, media and business in Iceland was the veto of a media ownership bill in 2004….the bill, aimed at combating the monopoly of private companies in the media…was rejected by the country’s president…Anyone who criticized them was immediately silenced.

Meritocracy and democratic freedom will always struggle where the talent pool is no bigger than the population of Coventry …That is why Icelanders are jacks of all trades by necessity.

The fact that they have managed to build some kind of state infrastructure is remarkable in itself.

Iceland, it seems, has been too small, too tight-knit, and too friendly for its own good. Strong social ties can, under certain circumstances, lead to incestuous corruption and the suppression of free speech.

And what about today?…that’s why there’s such a difference between farmhouses in Sweden and in Iceland. The Swedish farmhouses are built with dignity, the Icelandic farmhouses are just for living. They don’t care how they look. And I suppose it’s the same thing with all the loans, the same attitude of getting what you can today, and tomorrow…

As is customary in Iceland (they believe that safety rules are for sissies), the edge of Strokkur is fenced off purely symbolically – with a low thin rope. There are no escorts or rescuers to protect against the emissions of boiling water. Unsuspecting newcomers are captivated by the sight of the steaming blue water in the crater, especially when cheerful bubbles begin to bubble on the surface. This is the first sign of an approaching eruption, but everything looks quite peaceful – after bubbling, the bubbles disappear into the bottomless depths. In this way, Strokkur literally accumulates steam before shooting a giant white stream of boiling water to a height of 35 meters. The first time this happened before my eyes, I ran away in horror, waving my arms hysterically.

But the modern Icelander, with one foot in Scandinavia and the other in the Wild West, has evolved into something quite distinct from the northern European….They did not achieve the reliability, accountability, openness, strong civil society, and long-term orientation that made the Scandinavian countries so successful. The short links of communication that should have fostered an environment of mutual trust and responsibility enabled a small group of people to successfully evade accountability and suppress dissent. Deals were made outside the normal democratic channels. Bribes were handed out, dissenters were silenced, and it all happened very quickly.

What does the future hold for Iceland? The country has been put in a world-class corner and robbed of its pocket money. Manufacturing is weak and there aren’t enough fish in the sea to pay off its debts. So Icelanders turn their hopes to the mighty and terrifying force rumbling beneath their feet.

Iceland’s most famous tourist attraction is the Blue Lagoon, an open-air pool of pale blue, hot-spring-heated water nestled in craters in a volcanic lava field about forty-five minutes’ drive from Reykjavik….But in fact, the hot water and supposedly healthy silica mud are waste from the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant, which has been in operation since the 1970s. (I imagine advertising like “Come bathe in our industrial waste!” would hardly attract tourists.) …Now it’s poured into jars and sold in a local shop as an expensive face cream

Hahahaha!! After all the insults that he and the PPM have traded.

Of course he will want to be Minister of Tourism. And that means putting Johann back as Chair of Airport Authority.

How many enemies are Alden and Joey willing to take onboard in order to get their hands on power again?

  37. The Secretary to the Ambassador of Absurdistan says:

“Breaking News: PPM and UPM Unleash the Full Moon Agenda—Complete with Vaseline, Pancakes, and Tied Shoes”

Citizens of Absurdistan, prepare yourselves! The PPM and UPM have joined forces, and their collective genius has culminated in a groundbreaking vision that combines lunar lunacy, and, of course, untamed urges.

Let’s kick things off with their newfound rallying cry: “Pave the Reef!” Yes, this bipartisan dream sees the destruction of Cayman’s natural wonders as the ultimate unifying goal. Why stop at gutting conservation laws when you can throw in a cruise pier, a dry dock (for cruise liners only, because cargo is just too practical), and Mount Trashmore—a monument to toxic ingenuity, perfectly placed next to a healthcare facility and a school.

The Full Moon Festival: A Celebration of Innovation

And what better way to honor such visionary leadership than with a Quarterly Full Moon Pancake Festival? Highlights include:

    • Dwayne’s Loins Leap: Under the glow of the full moon, our beloved minister lets his urges guide him. With Vaseline in one hand and baby oil in the other, he takes a majestic leap… straight into another collision with an inanimate object. It’s a performance that truly reflects his governance style and staunch commitment to sobriety.

    • The Flip-Off Challenge: Ministers compete to flip pancakes—and their political allegiances—with Olympic-level finesse. Dwayne impresses the crowd by accidentally tying his shoelaces together mid-flip, creating a spectacle of tangled brilliance and leaving quantum physicians scratching their heads at his achievement of quantic entanglement.

    • Public Batter-Throwing: Citizens hurl batter at cardboard cutouts of politicians, with bonus points for anyone who can nail the Vaseline jar on Dwayne’s dashboard.

But wait, there’s more! The festival promises to explore the Mystery of the Vaseline Jar, rumored to be a staple in Dwayne’s car. While some speculate it’s for tire maintenance, others believe it’s a reflection of his full-moon-enhanced practicality (or lack thereof). Either way, it’s a story worthy of its own miniseries.

    A Closing Note of Reflection

If “Pave the Reef!” is the legacy of this newfound unity, perhaps we should rename Cayman to Absurdistan and let the Pancake Festival become its crowning glory. After all, with leadership this brilliant, we may as well lean into the absurdity.

The future of Cayman deserves better. But as long as our leaders are busy tying their shoes together, flipping pancakes, and colliding with stationary objects, it’s up to us to ensure they don’t tie up our future along with them.

Final part: No donkey was harmed during the redaction of the above , most of characters involved are fictional and will hopefully stay that way… Or are they ?

His legacy, built a $4 million park whilst placing the homeless caymanians in a hotel rooms. Dropped the ball on the erosion of SMB. The many trips to Barbados to set up the never go transport system in Cayman. The failed cayman/Barbados route and now this cruise referendum that Caymanians don’t want. PPM this guy is a snake and will stab you all in the back to save his own skin.

We desperately need to change the current system that allows small numbers of voters to effectively control the election of those who get into Cabinet.

Without that UDP/PPM/UPM/ABE/independents makes no difference.
