Dog found neglected in West Bay

(CNS): With help from the public following an appeal, the Department of Agriculture’s Animal Welfare & Control Unit has identified the owner of the two abandoned and neglected dogs found recently off Mercury Close in West Bay. “The investigations are ongoing as we continue to seek justice for our voiceless friends,” DoA officials said. Offering their appreciation to the members of the community for the valuable information provided, officials said it had greatly assisted in this matter.

“The Animal Welfare & Control Unit remains committed to protecting the welfare of animals across the Cayman Islands and encourages anyone with further information to continue reaching out in confidence via the following channels,” the release said.

The two dogs were found earlier this month severely malnourished.

CIG needs to ban imports unless they are already owned and they need to do an amnesty for breeders to get licenced then after that just do a sweep through the island for illegal breeders, strays etc. They did this in Bermuda decades ago and know there is a waiting list to adopt animals.

maybe ban dogs being kept chained up outside in yards?
not sure why any responsible dog owner would do that anyway?

12:40 there’s a ton of people do that all over the island. When I, a non Caymanian, asked my neighbour, a Caymanian civil servant, why he did it with three dogs, I got a distinctly non Caymankind response. Eventually you just give up…it’s their island.

Er, they’re not responsible dog owners @12:40, that’s the problem.

NB: there are often human children in this sphere of destruction, not just dogs. Also dogs.

long term… free… money making solutions:
    ban dog imports.
ban dog breeding in cayman for 10 years.
bring in $500 per year dog license…anyone found without a license to be fined $5k.

I tried to adopt one of them a bit too late. It seems that the Government had no choice but to put one down because he was too far gone. Very sad indeed.

Let’s note that $600,000 is to be blown on Pirate’s Week fireworks, a quantum more than is allocated to territorial homelessness, addiction, and rehab for a whole year. Abandoned pets, opportunistic crime, domestic family abuse are all calling cards.
