House in Newlands damaged in explosion, Monday 5 June

(CNS): The RCIPS has said that initial investigations into the house explosion on Bayfield Crescent in Newlands on Monday indicate that the incident was not due to suspicious circumstances. One man remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition. Police, fire, emergency services and other partner agencies remain on the scene as work on the cause continues.

The established police cordon remained in place Thursday, but the National Roads Authority has been working to clear the road of debris, and it was expected that the road would be reopened by the end of the day.

Police said that once the road is cleared, police will reduce the cordoned area to the immediate vicinity of the property. The public is asked to avoid the area as the work to find out what happened continues.

The initial explanation for the explosion was that it had been caused by an external propane tank, and over the week, a local propane gas company and OfReg were spotted at the scene.

There is no mystery. It was a propane leak inside the house which caused an explosion. There would be no fire from such an explosion but obviously it was violent and we should be eternally grateful that there was no loss of life!

Why not call in experts from the UK? Surely there are more competent investigators there.

Thoroughly investigation conducted by the EXPERTS specialising in investigating explosions, not The Police, would answer your question…but this is Cayman, where incompetency rules and everything is being swept under the rug, even the death of a child.

How does the ground look? Methane accumulation from the whatever source could cause such an explosion. If it felt as if the nearby houses were shifting off its foundation, there’s no way it was a propane tank explosion.

I’d be concerned and demand a thorough investigation, unless the site was cleaned up already.

Those living near the dump should be asking questions as well. I’d think they would want to know about the Dump’s gases. I mean, they would want to see the reports stating that methane accumulation is properly vented out. Because if the Dump blows…well, see the video of the dump explosion in Mexico 12 years ago…

I guess the RCIPs have to seem in control of the situation by stating what it obviously wasn’t rather than alternatives. Was it a meteor from outer space or just some poorly executed DIY propane hook up job?

what people living nearby felt doesn’t support the propane tank theory

The tank does not necessarily have to explode when there’s a combustible gas explosion. If there was a leak at the appliance the room containing that appliance would be most likely where the detonation began, or an adjacent room. And combustible gas regulators like the one on the tank contain a device that prevents a flame propagating back into the tank. Propane like methane is heavier than air so it typically travels along the ground. An incorrectly plumbed drain, such as one without a proper vent can also allow methane, hydrogen sulphide gases, both combustible to flow back into a room, like a laundry room with a wall drain with no p-trap and no vent. These types of scenarios are what building codes are supposed to mitigate.

How do you know if the area is safe if the Police are not saying what caused the explosion.

RCIP, lets see if they can do better on this than they can on catching all the criminals running loose all over the islands!

What a stupid statement “was not due to suspicious circumstances”. So in which case they know what blew up a neighbourhood but aren’t telling us.

Was it a gas leak? No. otherwise they would have said.

I wonder what else could blow up a neighbourhood so that it’s reminiscent of a “war zone” according to our Prem.
