New Cayman Miss Universe facing criminal charges

Miss Cayman Islands Universe 2022 Tiffany Conolly (from social media)

(CNS): Tiffany LeAnn Conolly (24) from West Bay collected a catalogue of prizes on Saturday evening when she was crowned Miss Cayman Islands Universe at the annual beauty pageant at the Westin Hotel. But her victory was met with dismay across social media as she is facing a number of criminal charges in relation to an assault last year, though she has not been convicted of anything.

Conolly last appeared in Summary Court in March facing two counts of common assault, two counts of damage to property, and two further charges for disorderly conduct at a police station and one of assaulting a police officer.

Connolly was arrested following an altercation at a former boyfriend’s house when she is alleged to have assaulted both her former lover and another family member before going on to assault a police officer at the detention centre following that arrest.

The case is still making its way through the system, but since she has not been found guilty of any charges, she was allowed to enter the pageant and was awarded Miss Photogenic, Miss Best Smile and Miss Best-In-Gown, as well as winning the overall contest.

The title comes with a bag full of prizes including a $70,000 three-year educational scholarship.

However, if Conolly is convicted, it is understood she will not be able to represent the Cayman Islands at the international pageant. In that case, Chloe Powery-Doxey, the first runner-up and winner of Miss Best Legs, will take over the beauty queen’s job.

I still just do not understand how she was allowed to compete. Why not wait till next year to compete if you have pending case against you? Looks like we have to wait till October to find out how this goes.
Personally I don’t think that having pending case means you should be able to compete. I’m not sure what the truth is, but that is what the court system is for, to ascertain what happened and either find guilty or not guilty. I just don’t think the issue of “forgiveness” is relevant in this case. She could be reformed, but at the end of the day it’s not a good look to have this kind of case against you, even if it is still pending.
As for the comparison of McKeeva, the difference is that he is voted in by the population of West Bay and the one man one vote and our current political makeup allows it to happen over and over.
the contestants for Miss Cayman are vetted by a select committee, so we as the population have nothing to do with that. Notice she didn’t win People’s Choice?

She won give it to her, rest her name, let her go and leave the remaining to the courts justices system that is solely unfair already.
She all deserve forgiveness and a path to second chances.

This is one of the more ignorant responses I’ve read in a while.

Whether or not you agree with this type of event, it has the power to reflect on our entire country. I would expect that the highest standards would be applied and anyone with any type of potential blemish to their name should be excluded.
I agree with the original poster that she should never have been allowed to compete. Just the optics of having these charges hanging over her head should be enough for disqualification.

Ignoring this after the fact of her winning is akin to sticking our heads in the sand.

While the wrong call was made by allowing her to compete, it doesn’t mean that a correction should not be attempted.

Also, I think this shows the poor judgment of the entire committee. I think every single person on that committee should be replaced.

Is it really necessary that we also draft and pass a “Standards In Pageant Life Law” to codify what sensible minds should perceive as disqualifying? Willful blindness is a recurring West Bay theme underwriting the erosion of principles that ought to matter. Character, for Ambassadorial positions, should be a default category!

Do you think forgiveness will matter when she’s on stage next to some of the smartest, most accomplished and beautiful women from around the world with squeaky clean records who have been raised to be pagent queens since birth? (I’m not saying those women are sin free but they don’t usually have criminal records!!!) And this is who we’re sending to stand next to them? That’s going to be a great look for Cayman. Because being called the money laundering country isn’t enough already :). Let’s not forget that she’s getting the $70k 3 year scholarship that could have gone to educating one of the other contestants who have actually shown themselves to be of good character…clearly the miss cayman judges are due for an eye exam because what is this lmao

What an absolute embarrassment. Everyone knew this girl had criminal baggage – it was being chatted about for weeks before the pageant. At last year’s pageant Minister Bryan announced that CIG was adding a full time coordinator to the Miss Cayman programme and that would be at our expense. So on top of the $70,000 Scholarship, televised pageant at the Westin Hotel $60,000, One year salary for Miss Cayman, car, hair, makeup, gym and expenses for her and a group of chaperones to Miss Universe for a month. My quick calculations put this at about a quarter million of taxpayers money. Given all the negative publicity this has already created – why are we still holding this sexist and archaic event? Perhaps the Minister can explain the need to us?

To be fair to CMR they have been writing about her since August 2018.

The more important question is, how many chances does this young lady expect to get? This is not about second chances any longer.

This is about entitlement and a young lady who has never been held to account for her horrid behavior.

This is not Tiffany’s first entry in this particular contest. When she entered previously the committee was well aware that she had issues. If measures were not put in place to weed out those with less than desirable reputations the committee had ample time to remedy that. Clearly this young lady has a history that should have disqualified her. Having a “clean police record” should not be the only requirement. Even if not yet convicted she has multiple charges pending against her which should have disqualified her entry. I actually feel sorry for this young lady because, in my opinion, she performed well and I don’t fault the judges for choosing her as the winner. In the circumstances she should not have been allowed to enter. XXXX

Being aware of her history and allowing her to enter, on the basis of a clean police record, has done her a disservice. Putting her on the global stage where she will be put under additional stress, along with all else that has been happening, is extremely unfair and dangerous. Each and everyone of those committee members should be sacked immediately! Shame on them for placing this young lady and these islands in such a disgraceful position.

The MC committee asked her step down from running and she refused, so Tiffany is equally to blame. XXXX They are so many people who have witnessed her bad behavior. Something is not right with this girl, and it’s a shame to see it blow up like this. She earned the title but her personal actions and character are not of a role model. She needs to take responsibility for her actions and sort herself out. We all do things, but admitting your mistakes, apologizing and then making a change would have been more powerful and beneficial for this young lady. Also a powerful witness to anyone who has done wrong that they can do right and earn high titles such as Miss Cayman. This either will tear her down or further push her delusion and she will never have to answer for her actions. This is not right for this girls projection forward.

All of those girls did so well and there could have been a scholarship given to another girl to help better her future. This has been an overall disappointment. So proud of Chloe btw, amazing beautiful talented girl, keep up the good work and come back better and stronger for next time. You are my Miss Cayman Universe. ☺️

For all ye who cast shade on Tiffany due to her arrests on multiple charges: In light of the fact that a convict can represent the people in government, and considering her arrest record (especially the charge for assault), she is an exemplary representative for the Cayman Islands on the world stage. Well…darn…she does fall a bit short in that she has not been convicted of anything.

What “two wrongs”, brightbox? The two convict members of parliament were duly qualified to stand as candidates and they were duly elected by the people. No wrong there according to lawful election procedure. Tiffany was qualified to enter the contest and she was duly selected as winner by the judges. If anything, Tiffany’s selection to represent the islands is quite consistent with who we are and what we do. If she stays her course, she may eventually prove worthy of a post in Cabinet, or as Speaker, might even make it to Premiere.

Imagine teaching our young ladies that these are the things that we value about them in our society in 2022.

“We choose you to represent us on a world stage because your legs nice still”? Unna don’t feel a way about that?

so given that the court system is backlogged, it could take the rest of her reign before she is convicted of anything. I would have thought any pending/ongoing investigations should have excluded her? So she would have entered Miss Universe and then been convicted. God forbid she actually go to Miss Universe and win, imagine the outcry if she was then convicted. We should be choosing the best overall candidate to go to represent Cayman.

Um. Why is Government in the beauty pageant busine$$$ anyways, when there is another private one?!??
And why will the government pageant allow single moms and married ladies to enter from next year??
Defeats the purpose of a Pageant.
Of course those ladies are beautiful but maybe they just need a separate pageant.

Um, a pageant is a pageant. If you can potentially be convicted down the road, I feel a respectable mother could represent us BETTER on the international stage.

Plus, why exclude people because they have a child or because it took them a long time to find the courage to do something like this? If they can get the job done, why not?!!!

Also, are you from the stone ages? Aren’t we fighting for equal opportunities for all? Bye Dinosaur Suzie

Did you bother to do some checking into the background of the issue and actually read the article. If you had you would have read this: “The case is still making their way through the system, but since she has not been found guilty of any charges, she was allowed to enter the pageant.” Sheesh! The pot calling the kettle black.

Maybe because we want to hold woman as more than just a physical attraction. Events based on beauty are ridiculous. The money spent on this could have been spent on proper education. Looking good in a dress is not a valuable skill.
