3rd positive COVID case emerges in contact tracing

Cayman Airways CEO Fabian Whorms at Friday’s press briefing

(CNS): A third person has tested positive for COVID-19 during the contact tracing linked to the woman who was hospitalised on Wednesday, according to Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee. This person was not vaccinated but had no symptoms. The other 49 or so people who have been tracked so far after contact with these two community cases, the first in over a year, tested negative. Two of these positive cases have been confirmed as the Delta variant.

But exactly how these three people were infected remains a mystery. Dr Lee explained that it is difficult to find the source since the person who infected them may no longer have the virus, and people don’t always remember and are not always truthful with officials about those they have met.

Speaking at Friday evening’s media briefing, the CMO said the new case has led to more contact tracing, which will continue over the weekend as the hunt for the source goes on.

Medical Officer of Health Dr Samuel Williams-Rodriguez explained that those who are being traced and tested have so far shown no travel history for more than a month, and he confirmed that public health officials are able to verify if people have travelled.

The patient who was the first of this group to test positive with the coronavirus remains in hospital in a stable condition, and while she has few COVID-19 symptoms, she is dealing with other medical issues.

Meanwhile, the health and tourism ministers both confirmed that the woman who managed to board a Cayman Airways flight to Grand Cayman despite having a positive test result for COVID-19 remains in tagged quarantine with her travelling companion. She is facing an investigation, as it is an offence to travel with a positive test.

Cayman Airways CEO Fabian Whorms said the airline had implemented increased security measures to stop this from happening again as well as conducting an internal investigation. Explaining why CAL staff on the flight have not been quarantined, he said that the cockpit crews are kept separate from passengers so they are never at risk.

But he said the cabin crew are on the front line with travellers on every flight, where there could be a positive case, and so, since repatriation flights began, they have been utilizing strict measures to minimise their exposure. Whorms said there is no cabin service and zero contact with passengers unless there is an emergency, so they are there for safety only. In this case, “the mitigation measure were inherent, as they are on every flight”.

There is always a chance of someone being covid-positive on a flight, and in many cases there is someone, he noted. But because of the social distancing, lack of interaction, the PPE and other measures, along with the fact that the crew are all vaccinated and tested monthly, public health has said there is no need for them to be quarantined or additionally tested.

However, aware of the community’s concerns about the positive traveller, Whorms said that after processing more than 10,000 travellers since the repatriation flights began, they were surprised by this situation. He said the airline needed to get the information to understand how it happened and said that they should “get to the bottom of it” by tomorrow.

OMG just keep the damn place closed for as long as it takes to rid the world of Covid. This is the only thing that will make some of you happy.

I have no expectation of CIG removing quarantine in October, the date will be pushed back. Tourists are not returning as long as there is quarantine and CAL will continue to be the only link in and out of here unless you want to catch a BA flight and head over to the mother country.

CIG doesn’t have the guts to make the decision to drop quarantine to those few people that can actually produce the vaccine proof required. We are not opening on 14 October. I will be shocked if we open before March 2022….IF then. But so what? Who cares about small businesses that have lost everything because of the closed border? Who cares about hotels, vacation rentals, restaurants? I’m mean they don’t matter at all – at least that is sure what it seems some of you think.

Your talking like there is a big recession heading our way. Just because a lot of Caymans money makers are closed, many are no longer working, and the Government is spending money like they stole it (They actually borrowed it and need to pay it back later somehow). That does not mean that Bush will not save the day for Caymanians future. Have faith. In Bush, in CIG, in the vaccine, in the closed borders. Everyone else needs to start working on their plans for their future.

  4. Annie says:

Community spread likely occurred earlier than this. We just found out about it this week. It was inevitable. So now it is realized and verified. Okay. Any sane person knew this would happen sooner or later. The fix is to get vaccinated. If you don’t want to to get vaccinated then you need to protect yourself. The virus is generally believed to be aerosolized. So you need to avoid all indoor venues and avoid groups, especially indoors. Be safe.

💥 UN Secretary-General says world is at ‘pivotal moment’ and countries must work together to avoid breakdown of global order and a future of perpetual crisis.

The world is under ‘enormous stress’ on almost every front, he said, and the COVID-19 pandemic was a wake-up call demonstrating the failure of nations to come together and take joint decisions.

Guterres said this ‘paralysis’ extends far beyond COVID-19 to the failures to tackle the climate crisis and ‘our suicidal war on nature and the collapse of biodiversity.’

Other crises, he said, include ‘unchecked inequality’ undermining the cohesion of societies, and technology’s advances ‘without guard rails to protect us from its unforeseen consequences.’

Global order is already breaking down. civil unrest in many developed countries. people choose to quit jobs over covid jabs mandates…thousands essential workers simply walk out – nurses, doctors, police, firemen…=>crime skyrockets, shortage of workers in every industry…So the domino effect has begun…shortage of everything is coming… learn to perform appendectomy for there might be no doctor available. Buy a bike for there won’t be a mechanic to fix it, let alone shortage of part.

Cayman may kiss goodbye to the life it knows and loves. It is never going to be the same. Nearly total destruction of the environment, overdevelopment, disappearance of the SMB will keep visitors away.
The shortage of workforce will keep your hotels closed, hence exodus of professional and vocational workers will follow.

COVID problem, which Cayman never really had will look like a child’s play.

Mark my words, perpetual worldwide crisis has began, even if you don’t feel it yet.

And it all started with an idiotic idea of eliminating the VIRUS. Humans will be long gone, but the virus will still exist.

Should understanding be granted, you will see religion is no longer needed, so too is prayer.
With this understanding you will be guided to health and more.
The health granted here is superior to all viruses, and sicknesses and hence will prevent transmission.

If not granted, then a healthy life style should be adopted which excludes all forms of animal protein, and one which should includes lots of sunlight on the skin.
Flexibility or stretching exercises are the best, along with walking .

Also if understanding is granted you will see that trees that bear fruits are and will be very important.
If possible, grow what you eat.

There is one God, one Devine energy which encompasses us all, no fairy in the sky.

Thanks for exposing the big fraud of religion. Religion is a predator of the people run by narcissistic racists businessmen disguised as priests, pastors, mullahs and other hierarchy.
These belief systems are responsible for wars and the deaths of millions on the planet. COVID 19 is a good example. Religious believers in many cases refuse to get the vaccine based on an exhaustive list of conspiracy theories often spread by religious leaders. Thanks to responsible scientists for responding so fast using Science Facts and cutting edge digital technology the world is a safer place as many lives were saved. I do believe there is a supreme consciousness, and we have all the tools to solve all the problems on the planet. We just have to abandon religion as a source of salvation.

Bermuda is having a lot of Covid cases at the moment and fortunately for those of us outside of Bermuda they also publish detail that our government refuses to provide. Many of their incoming travelers, including vaccinated travelers are not testing positive until day 10 after arrival. That probably means that our 5 day quarantine for vaccinated persons is allowing infected people to slip into the country undetected.

Meanwhile basic face coverings and hand washing etc, also why not give everyone an anybody test so we can see if we have natural antibodies… likely that thousands in cayman have had Covid but never had symptoms due to the vaccines or just a good immune response… antibody testing would tell us a lot.

  16. Anonymous says:

The government cannot possibly believe that the majority of Caymanians, or even the majority of people who voted for them, want quarantine to be dropped: in the middle of this Delta wave, before boosters have been distributed to front line workers and the vulnerable, and before the vaccine is available to our children. They ought to know that the people understand that ending quarantine in October would be a very stupid decision.

You are right. Ideally the Ministry of Finance would publish figures on the relative economic costs and benefits of dropping quarantine compared with keeping quarantine. I wish I could double like this. My concern is that vaccinated people have a false sense of security and complacency about the COVID situation. Just because you are vaccinated does not mean you should be traveling everywhere constantly and going all over island and interacting with everyone and not caring about masks etc. I 100% agree that everyone should act smartly especially the vaccinated as they are more likely to be the free movers who won’t know they are sick. If you want to go travel – at least be considerate enough to quarantine yourself on your return and don’t head straight to grocery stores or work. Unvaccinated people will be locked away for 14+ days. Let’s all just be careful and please people stop going and seeing your quarantining friends and doing silly things!

Most of Bermuda’s deaths came before the immunization came out. Look at all facts. Cases can be minor. Cayman has had 723. Only 2 deaths. Put things in perspective.

The government should read this press release closely, as they will need to produce a similar one about six to eight weeks after October 14th.

Politics aside it’s almost a no-win situation for any government. Widespread community transmission is inevtiable if we open and yet it seems pointless to try and maintain the bubble forever.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. That said, if we do go ahead with the opening, I’d rather we put in mask mandate indoors, encourage people to social distance and just see what happens.

No one, even the “OPEN THE BORDERS” zealots want to live in a world where th police are asked to enforce a law banning people from standing too close together, no eating inside, bars and places of worship closed, businesses forced to shut if one employee tests positive…

If we are going to go that way (and given the need for the government to be seen to be trying to protct people, I think they will), then we are far better off maintaining the bubble. We may get a few tourists but there will be nothing for them to enjoy. And the rest of the economy will suffer.

Stop chasing COVID positive individuals!!!!!! The Cayman bubble🎈 😶‍🌫️ is about to burst! Millions are being wasted to achieve impossible goals.

Standby for yet another epic Vaccinate Everyone v. Covid Isn’t A Big Deal skirmish.

One can assume if this spread person to person on island and it’s Delta there will be more infected. The person(s) had to be walking around for days and days prior to symptoms. Be happy you are vaccinated and be worried if not. Pop goes the bubble.

  39. Anonymous says:

3rd case… no symptoms. All those that just ran out and panic shopped think how many cases were around w/ those 52 breaches and people showed no symptoms or very little symptoms and thought they just had a cold?

  40. Anonymous says:

So the unvaccinated person is the only one of the 3 with no symptoms? Interesting. So much for the vaccine making the symptoms less severe!

I firmly believe that the best defense is the combination of your hygiene behaviors and maintaining your personal health by properly eating, thinking, and resting.

    • Anonymous says:

A person who has been exposed and tests positive may be too early in the infection to show symptoms. Think of it this way – you might be around someone with a cold and feel fine for a few days, and then get a sore throat that progresses and develops into a full-blown cold. Just because you didn’t show symptoms for three days doesn’t mean you weren’t infected by the initial exposure. The unvaccinated person isn’t showing symptoms yet, but may still.

you forgot “and stimmy checks” after resting.

“This person was not vaccinated but had no symptoms”

    So perfect healthy and well.

  42. Anonymous says:

Much ado about nothing! Vaccinated people should not be suffering for the selfishness and ignorance of the unvaccinated. This is where were expecting to be in a couple of weeks so I don’t understand why everyone is freaking out! Get vaccinated or take your chances. Open up with no masks or social distancing. We have paid a high price to protect the elderly and infirm but now that vaccines are free, safe and effective and it’s time for the vaccinated majority to be able to live normal lives again. Why are suffering to benefit a stupid, ignorant minority??

  43. Anonymous says:

Since vaccinated travelers can be carriers, and since their quarantine period upon arrival here was ridiculously reduced to 5 days, it is likely that community spread has been happening for a while! So, yes, Lee is right, it will be difficult to trace the source. What is happening is the result of having an incompetent government in charge. If they are allowed to continue to bring in more commercial flights at this time with visitors from known hotbeds for COVID, under the false belief that vaccines will protect, the health and wellbeing of our people will continue to be threatened.

So according to GISAID.org tracking data for Delta variant we now have 11 + these new 3 cases of the variant. Check the site on Monday and see if there’s an update.

Assuming UK NHS is sharing Cayman’s data with this organisation why isn’t HSA publishing these figures?

I would hope the Government here realizes that any document in Jamaica can be forged and bought with the right kind and amount of money. I wonder why her companion tried to distance himself from her when it was reaveled that she have Covid? A lot of restrictions should be implimented now. The Government is talking about looking out for the Caymanian people I hope they put their words into action. Stop with granting all these work permits and give Caymanians a chance to get work in their own country and stop importing all these people here. They should also give back that raise they gave themselves a few months ago because they certainly do not need it. They were already getting big fat salaries. That way they wouldn’t need to be granting so many work permits and when so much of our own people are suffering too. Then they have the audacity to try to make Caymanians believe they care so much for them. I am sure we all as Caymanians who voted them in thought we were getting a Government who was going to look out for us. They should stop and remember that is the reason PPM is no longer the Government.

    • Anonymous says:

      They charge for permits $$$

    • Anonymous says:

Caymanians will not work the jobs the work permit holders do. This is a fact in many countries. Don’t ignore this truth. Either do without these jobs, or accept those who will take them.

    • Anonymous says:

🔢 Fact: the govt unit that approves work permits must meet a work permit quota on a monthly basis as part of measuring its effectiveness. Unfortunately, maintaining that quota (a + for them) means Caymanians do not get to fill positions (a + for Caymanian unemployment). We need a double minus (less work permits = less Caymanian unemployment).

    • Robert Mugabe IV says:

      Breaking News-
The only Caymanians who are capable of working and don’t have a job are those that don’t want to work. Why would any local business owner go through the expense of hiring ex pats if a local was ready and willing to work.
Don’t give me any nonsense about low level paying jobs like fast food outlets, maids, construction labourers etc etc. paying low wages. It’s the same worldwide. Who’s going to pay someone more than the minimum wage to say “Welcome to Mc Norton’s, what would you like to order?” or “Pass some more blocks” It’s just not going to happen.
Idiots out there want the minimum wage to be $12 and $13 an hour.
In fact the minimum wage for labour in construction in Cayman has been more or less the same for 30 years.
There’s only one reason and one reason only that Caymanians, my own Caymanians stay at home and sit on there rear ends. They have become too accustomed to this Social Welfare State. They stay at home on their rear ends and their kids grow up with the same mindset.
The ex pats aren’t the problem, we are!

A lot of what you say is true, but ultimately, you have to blame continuous elected governments, the members of which consistently decide to give its less ambitious citizens a fish rather than teaching them to fish – and then forcing them go fishing to get by, Laziness, just like water, finds the path of least resistance. Create resistance and you can alter the path in a more productive direction. For politicians, the path of least resistance is to use taxpayer money to buy votes instead of doing what’s best for the country and earning votes.

PPM was looking out for your health but you all let Sandra indoctrinate you. Alden wouldn’t have been talking about opening up with all of these cases of Covid. This government doesn’t care. Alden knows what it feels like to have a hard time breathing because he was in an accident.

My guess is someone took a flight to Miami or Jamaica, returned positive and friends just couldn’t stay away during quarantine.

The US media is reporting some very positive news.

A pediatric version of the Pfizer vaccine for 5 – 11 year olds should be authorized by the end of October. It would be great if our children could be vaccinated before quarantine ends and Covid floods in.

    • Anonymous says:

Why would anyone do this to their child? Children in this age group have almost no issues at all. And I know a bunch that have had it-most of them didn’t even need a tissue. If you are vaccinating against a killer like small pox, measles, mumps, whatever – yes get the vaccine but this would be borderline madness.

We should not drop quarantine until children have been vaccinated and those at risk have had boosters.

    According to CNN

“the New England Journal of Medicine will publish Israeli data showing that a booster shot of Pfizer’s vaccine dramatically decreased severe Covid-19, Dr. Nachman Ash, director general of the Israeli Ministry of Health, told CNN.”

“It found that 12 days or more after the booster was given, the relative risk of severe illness decreased more than ten times and the relative risk of confirmed infection decreased more than 11 times.”

At Friday’s press conference the Premier essentially acknowledged that government had not done any comparative costing of maintaining quarantine past 14 October versus eliminating quarantine and as a result having to deal with significant community spread and possible lockdown. Instead the Premier waffled around an acknowledgement that doing comparative costing was something that could be done going forward.

Deciding to set a target of opening 14 October based on representations from the tourism sector without doing even a basic economic assessment of the economic implications of dropping quarantine while the Delta variant is accelerating disappointing. I had hoped for more from this government.

    • Anonymous says:

Why waste time doing that? We are going to open up. The rest of the world is living with it, so will we. Not a problem if you were sensible and took the vaccine. Bad luck to all those on Government handouts.
