Governor Martyn Roper gets the COVID-19 vaccine

(CNS): Just 92 more people stepped forward to get vaccinated against COVID-19 for the first time over the last two days. while 98 got their second dose. Just five weeks ahead of the proposed soft border opening on 9 September and less than one week away from Phase 2, when government plans to stop digitally monitoring people in home isolation who are vaccinated, there is no sign that the plan to re-open is encouraging people to come forward.

Just 68% of the estimated population is now fully vaccinated against the coronavirus and 71% have had at least one jab, which means more than 6,000 adults and kids over 12 need to come forward for their first shot in the next couple of weeks if government is to meet the 80% target by 9 September.

Meanwhile, two more travellers in isolation have tested positive for COVID-19 over the last day and there are now seven active cases among those isolating, three of whom are suffering symptoms of the virus but their are no hospitalised COVID patients.

As of Monday, people arriving in Cayman with a verifiable, full vaccination course will be asked to self-isolate for five days on trust. This will significantly increases the risk of community transmission since, while the potential punishment of six months in jail or CI$10,000 fine remains, without the monitoring system there will be less risk of travellers being caught if they break the rules.

Government has said this small change is a first step that will allow officials to assess local impacts and build capacity to manage the increase in traveller volume anticipated with the opening of the borders in Phase 3. Few other changes will happen on Monday, though vaccinated front-line workers will now face weekly PCR testing, given the higher risk of exposure.

See here for more information on securely verifiable vaccination records.

MS-NBC is reporting that people arriving in Israel from the US and a number of other countries must quarantine for 14 days irrespective of vaccination because of the Delta variant.

Israel has been ahead of us throughout this pandemic. Seems like we are heading in the wrong direction by relaxing quarantine requirements starting this weekend.

Israel has not been ‘ahead of us’. Their birder was never closed like here. Stop living in dreamland, COVID is not going away. The cayman bubble is not sustainable… if you keep the airport closed you may lose the expats forever and they pay for 90 per cent of the cayman economy

Get the vaccine for your fellow man and if you want to travel to the U.S. They announced yesterday no vaccination, no entry. So, no vaccination, no Miami trips, no Disney, no Vegas baby, no U.S. anything.

The US of A should be last place anyone should want to go to right now. I cannot see how this is an incentive.

      • Anonymous says:

But what if you ever need to travel to Miami for urgent medical care? You will need the jab. So go get vaccinated to cover yourself.

Unfortunately today’s press briefing left much to be desired. Where oh where was the Premier? We had Kenneth Bryan speaking of a 100k vaccine lottery and apparently a plot of land that would also be raffled off to a lucky vaccine recipient. Last I checked health was not his ministry. There was talk about pretty significant changes to WORC, again, not his ministry. Now, I’m no fan of his, but I guess giving credit where it’s due, we’re more enlightened with information as a result of the presser. But back to my initial question… where was the Premier?!

The government is removing the monitoring of those who are vaccinated arriving in Cayman within the next few days. Several hundred arrive each day most of whom are vaccinated and most of whom are law abiding.

However, not all are law abiding as we have seen and the breakthrough rate for the Delta variant is something like 1%. Therefore we will be having more and more infected un-monitored people arriving every day some of whom will skip quarantine and infect others. Personally I think that removing monitoring is an invitation to community spread.

    • Anonymous says:

They are just removing the wrist bands and phone. They will be doing live spot checks. You would be an idiot to risk prison because you can’t stay inside for five days.

They have to test this process out in advance of Sept 9th.

      • Anonymous says:

Agreed but we have had a number of idiots breaking quarantine despite wrist band trackers so it is predictable that more will breach without.

If there is a deadly pandemic, why are we not readjusting ourselves, our lives, our habits?

    • Anonymous says:

We are! The airport is closed to normal travel. That is a huge adjustment – we are stuck here and can’t go anywhere. Most residents haven’t seen their family in well over a year. That is a massive adjustment to normal life. And when we open we will need to be careful with masks and social distancing, and the unvaccinated will face big restrictions on travel and entering various establishments. That is also a huge change.

    • a nony mouse says:

Have you not been reading the news for the last 18 months? Literally everyone in the entire world has had to change the way they live.

    • Anonymous says:

Because we think we can shut it out by limiting flights in and out and quarantining the passengers. Which has worked very well so far, but is only a missed PCR test or an illegal canoe passenger’s trip to a crowded bar away from a community outbreak.

  11. Open up! says:

I do not get the purpose of waiting till we reach the elusive 80 percent vaccinated mark.

Once the Island reopens the spread of the Delta Variant is inventible, it is super contagious even amongst some vaccinated persons.
The only comfort is that vaccinated persons seem to be having milder infections, avoiding hospitalization and generally fairing better.

So we can go ahead and reopen now and all those that have chosen not to get vaccinated will bear the consequences.

No point to even lockdown once there is spread, we will all get Covid at some point, just make sure you are vaccinated to have a better outcome, we are only delaying the inventible.

    • Anonymous says:

But, these same unvaccinated people will choke the health system, taking up beds where others (who may be vaccinated), need other kinds of non-Covid urgent care!

      So selfish.

      • Anonymous says:

OP here. We are in agreement that all persons should be vaccinated, and that we can not keep the vaxx reluctant to keep us shut off from from the rest of the world.

The current situation is untenable, and there is this illusion that we will be able to prevent community spread upon reopening.

Perhaps unvaccinated persons should be asked to sign a waiver acknowledging that they are refusing this potentially life saving resource and thus will not have priority for treatment.

Removing the electronic mornitoring is a huge mistake noting everything going on worldwide with respect to the Delta variant. I am thinking of all the children scheduled to go back to school (especially those under age 12) in a few weeks and how devastating it will be if we end up in another lockdown. What’s the point of loosening the restrictions when we STILL have heard NOTHING from the government on what the reaction will be when we get COVID cases in the community again???????? The people deserve to know. No one wants lockdown and it is not worth reducing restrictions on quarantine if we’re going to give up our current state of life.

    • Anonymous says:

Our current state of life can not continue. We must adapt to living with COVID as it is here for ever.

Why the government needs to do is simply say we are opening to vaccinated people on a said day and watch all the holdouts come forward for their shots.

With out a doubt weather we change our isolation or not we will get it here one day just look at Australia and how it spread from the isolation hotels evan after some here there for 14 days.

  13. Anonymous says:

Thank you for providing the vaccination schedule CNS.

Sadly it seems that government is showing no innovation and even fewer options compared with what was offered before. Mondays everything is closed and for the rest of the month nothing is open on Thursdays. Why are there still no mobile vaccinations in all districts every week? Why are there no mobile facilities going to supermarkets and large work sites? This does not look like what was promised a few weeks ago.

Another jurisdiction is implementing an internal ‘vaccine passport’ system to minimize Covid spread and allow the majority to live relatively normal lives.

“Quebec will implement a vaccine passport regime in the coming weeks, Premier François Legault announced today.

Details of the regime will be released soon, Legault said. But he said the rising case numbers in Quebec, and the prospect of more hospitalizations and deaths in the coming weeks, has made the vaccine passport regime necessary.

The regime will allow the province to avoid the widespread closures that have marked its pandemic response to date, he said.

“People who made the effort to get their two doses should be able to live a somewhat normal life,” Legault said.”

Previous estimates had put the figure at more than 52,600 admissions, PA news reports.

Estimates of how many infections in England have been prevented by the vaccine (between 21.3 and 22.9 million) and also the number of deaths (between 57,500 and 62,700) are unchanged.”

The USA announced today that you will have to be vaccinated to enter the country, you already need to be vaccinated to enter most bars and restaurants and avoid extensive quarantine in many cities like New York and most of Europe. If we have thousands of unused vaccine doses, hopefully our government will permit those at higher risk from Covid to receive a booster shot prior to the border re-opening. If they do not they are unnecessarily risking peoples lives as Israel has discovered. CNN

“Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is warning that Israelis over 60 are at risk unless they go get their third booster shot immediately.
In a recorded audio message meant to be forwarded to friends and family, Bennett said that in the next two to three weeks anyone who is over the age of 60 and has not yet received their third vaccine is six times more likely to become seriously ill from the coronavirus, compared to those who are five days past their third shot.
Bennett warned that all those over the age of 60 take extreme caution until they get their third dose, including not being in crowded places, and only seeing their grandchildren outside and masked.”

    • Anonymous says:

I agree. Priority should be given to those with no vaccination but with the quarantine rules being relaxed in a few days and the virus likely to arrive shortly thereafter, we should not allow any vaccine to be sent to the dump. Allow those who want a booster to get one.

Gibraltar has learned that high vaccination rates significantly limit Covid and limits serious illness but even with high vaccination rates, it is necessary to limit large events and restrict access to public venues such as restaurants and bars to people who are fully vaccinated. Antonucci said it’s dangerous to think that the mortality rate will not spike again. Deaths are climbing as hospitalizations skyrocket.

“Well, it’s showing that this virus continues to spread in our community, primarily in the unvaccinated community. If you look at the patients that are in the hospital right now, about 90% are unvaccinated. And certainly, none of the patients in the ICU have been vaccinated,” Antonucci said.

  30. Where are the logics says:

If there is such a deadly virus, why do we travel, eat out in restaurants, attend gatherings, bars and public events. It is shown keeping the borders closed is one one way of eliminating the virus but how will people survive? Can they survive? Are there alternatives?

If we follow the science and get vaccinated, are we able to travel hassle free, eat out in restaurants, pubs and public events. Will the world go back to normal?
    What is the evidence showing?

Would the government please host another press conference.

Many people have questions. For example, I’d like to ask why the quarantine period is different for vaccinated people versus unvaccinated people (including children) if both groups can contract and spread Covid?

Other readers will have their own questions. More regular discussions and dialogue with government would be helpful to many people at this stage.

    • Anonymous says:

I can answert hat for you. You clearly are incapable of researching basis thingsa bout Covid. The quarantine is shorter for vaccinated because the vaccine hugely reduces your chances of contracting or spreading the virus vs unvaccinated, and if you do get it you are unlikely to transmit it to others as much or get so ill that you need public health resources.

      • Anonymous says:

You are wrong. Even if you are vaccinated, you can catch Covid-19 AND transmit it to others that you come in contact with. Even more so with the Delta variant. You need to get your facts straight. That is why the CDC and even President Biden wants to impose mandatory mask wearing but there are radicals like the Florida Governor who is not keen as he’s only thinking about getting re-elected if he makes people happy.

        • Anonymous says:

But you can only catch it possibly. It’s still a small percentage chance you catch Covid while vaccinated. So just forking get vaccinated and we could all move on.

  32. As we ponder says:

    What is known:
If vaccinated, and gets infected you are likely to spread the virus more, hence, the mask mandate.
This means everyone is likely to catch it once the borders are open but for those vaccinated the risk of hospitalization and death is greatly reduced.
    What of the unvaccinated
People should not be told to get vaccinated to protect others and they believe they will be just fine, and they will not overburden the health system, they will not need to be hospitalized and may not die.
Why the call to get vaccinated if the people think they will do just fine without.
Are there evidence people can survive without getting vaccinated?

    • Anonymous says:

Sorry but that is so wrong. All the evidence is that people who get vaccinated are far less likely to become ill or spread the virus. It is true that social media sites spread garbage – but that garbage is no evidence of anything other than the effective use of click-bate against the ill-informed,

By June 1st, over 99% of Gibraltar’s population was fully vaccinated.
Since that time, new COVID cases per day have increased from 1 to 25 and the country is now going back into lockdown.

Similar stories are occurring in other countries with the highest percentages vaccinated; Israel, UK, Malta and Iceland.

Because the vaccine can decrease the volume of spread, and for those who are vaccinated who then contract COVID-19 there is less chance that those individual will be seriously ill or require hospitalisation. This means the hospital systems are less likely to be operating at capacity and can provide those who are hospitalised (numbers from the US and UK are showing hospitalised patients are predominantly unvaccinated) with better care.

I am vaxxed but need to get this straight in my head. I thought it only stopped severe symptoms and death? Where is the CDC ( not opinion based ) showing that it reduces the actual volume of spread. Even my doctor when I asked was not 100% on this, it’s getting confusing. Thank you.

They wear a seatbelt and put up hurricane shutters, but won’t get a vaccine. So strange. Let’s hope there are enough hospital beds for them when we open.

Lets hope there are enough hospital beds for people with other illnesses or involved in accidents, and not all occupied by Covid sufferers who could have gotten vaccinated but chose not to.

I didnt know we had so many stupid people in Cayman

There are other ways to limit Covid. Hopefully we will not allow cruise ships back until at least 247% of the total population has been double vaccinated, – and hell freezes over.

The US White House statement today that proof of vaccination will be required for people entering the US is welcome news. Hopefully they will apply it to US persons arriving and departing as well.

this is the true plan which does not involve any plan for re-opening:
cig are planning/waiting for limited community transmission which will then result in some type of lockdown measures, the community gets angry and wants borders fully closed again….cig will gladly go backwards.
win-win for cig as they don’t ever have to face the reality if dealing with covid.

there is no plan to re-open. 80% is virtually impossible.
the real plan/truth is that cayman will fully re-open when the rest of the world is back to normal and covid has been declared simlilar risk to that of seasonal flu…..which will likely be next spring.
    thanks for nothing pact.

10:07, How in Lord’s name can we possibly reopen with what is going on in Florida today?

Dr. Death, the Governor of Florida, needs to get his act together. To blame everything on Biden and immigrants as he did today is pure and utter B.S.

Oh, and now they are running out of oxygen in hospitals too.

      The stupidity overwhelms me.

Sensible news from the US today

“Future travelers to the United States will have to be fully vaccinated a White House official has said. The new requirement is being discussed as part of a phased approach to easing restrictions for foreign visitors.”

  46. anonymous says:

still no “plan b” when we don’t reach the 80% vaccinated by Sept. 9, Premier Panton has only said he will NOT back down from the 80%–but no further word as to what will happen when it isn’t met.

  47. Anonymous says:

How many of the active cases are vaccinated?

  48. Anonymous says:

No border opening date, no vaccine.

  49. Anonymous says:

“As of Monday, people arriving in Cayman with a verifiable, full vaccination course will be asked to self-isolate for five days on trust. This will significantly increases the risk of community transmission since, while the potential punishment of six months in jail or CI$10,000 fine remains, without the monitoring system there will be less risk of travellers being caught if they break the rules.”

Trust lol. They are going to let the virus in. Get your shots while you still can.

Why have we received no info from government on the reaction once we have COVID in the community? We deserve to know! I don’t want to go through another lockdown, homeschooling, etc.
