(CNS): Registration will begin next week for the seasonal National Community Enhancement (NiCE) Project, which is led by the Ministry of Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure. But despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on employment, there will still only be two weeks work available for those who can get it. The work will start on Monday, 7 December, and last until Friday, 18 December, and is available to unemployed Caymanians and spouses of Caymanians aged 18 and over.

In past years the NiCE Project has lasted up to three weeks. Given the current situation, there were hopes in the community that government would be able to extend the work, which pays $10 an hour and $12 for supervisors. Officials have not commented on why the programme has not been extended.

Despite the booming economy last year before the pandemic struck, the NiCE programme in November 2019 attracted more than 600 workers.

With social gatherings still limited to 500 and expectations of a significant number of people wanting to sign on, registration will take place this year for new applicants only in each district separately.

Anyone who has done the work before and registered in the past can collect an application form from any district library, MP’s office, the Needs Assessment Unit, WORC and the public reception at the Government Administration Building.

They must place their completed application form in the NiCE drop boxes at the district public libraries, WORC or the Government Administration Building. Alternatively, they can email it to NCEP@gov.ky or WhatsApp it to 917-0153 by no later than noon on Wednesday, 2 December.

For first-time applicants, registration takes place on Wednesday, 2 December, from 9am to 12 noon.

They must take a photo ID and voters ID card or a birth certificate, passport or Caymanian status certificate or stamp in valid passport to show same. Spouses of Caymanians must bring photo ID and Residency with Employment Rights Certificate (RERC) or stamp in passport to show same.

Registration will be undertaken in the districts where the applicants live.

Just off the top of my head, here are some of the taxes we dont pay:

▪25c tax on EVERY bank/atm card transaction
▪stamp duty on every health insurance policy
    ▪ stamp duty on every life insurance policy
    ▪ stamp duty on every vehicle insurance policy
    ▪ stamp duty on every property insurance policy
    ▪ tax on all fuel for vehicular use and electricity generation
    ▪ tax on every departure out of the Cayman Islands (built into ticket)
    ▪ tax on every arrival into the Cayman Islands (built into ticket)
    ▪ up to 42% tax on vehicle imports
    ▪ 22% tax on pretty much all our food
    ▪ licensing/regulation fees/taxes passed onto all customers with utilities inc CUC, internet, cable TV providers
    ▪ stamp duty/tax on property sales
    ▪ stamp duty/tax on all mortgages (placing + removing liens at Lands+Survey)
    ▪ govt (DEH) fees for all stratas and commercial devts for dumpster rental and garbage pick ups
    ▪ recycling fees/tax on second hand car imports
    ▪ recycling fees/tax on new tyres

Just FYI, they add up to more than what 40% income tax would be. In other words, even with higher salary and no direct income tax, most middle class income earners in Cayman have LESS disposable income and savings due to general cost of living which include these (above) and more indirect, built in taxes.

Moron this is not America we don’t pay taxes here, yeah maybe the prices here on island are higher than any where else in the world but the crown pays for everything.

    How dumb can one be????

    • Anonymous says:

Whyb do you think the prices are high? Because we pay taxes in the form of import duty asking other things! Not having income tax did not mean that we are not taxed in many many other ways.

    wonderland stuff…
a bankrupt government running a $30 deficit every month is now paying people to pick up their own trash…..while not bothering once to enforce anti-littering laws……zzzzzzzzz

    • Anonymous says:

It’s not like that at all brother. It’s all just a welfare scam. Spending money to get votes and nothing else. Also training future wanna be workers to throw more trash out the window so they can have something to do for the free money.

Why aren’t people getting tourism stipend doing this all along?

  8. Anonymous says:

They are able-body people, who should be employed everyday, not just fir 2 weeks. The Unity Government touted employment fir all Caymanians but after election they lost the ong sheet. Wake up and clean the slate in 2021. New broom sheets clean and removes the dust from the corners.

If only people didn’t throw their garbage out of the car window?

AAAAMazing when the crap filled diaper hits the weed eater. No where to run. These people earn their money.

  10. Elvis says:

There should be a probation officer or social worker in charge of a party every week consisting of minor law breakers cleaning cayman on a daily basis for free.
People here would rather send people to prison for 3 weeks though and charge the people to keep them there lol. Couldn’t make it up really

Why aren’t there a few full time positions doing this work on Public Beach which is now a dump. Why are there still stacks of rotting beach chairs on the beach when there is not a tourist in sight, can’t they be moved until needed?

    • Anonymous says:

Why cant they be removed period? Not as if they are there legally anyway.

      • Anonymous says:

Asshole they are there legally, everyone that used to operate on the beach is getting government stipend, which is peanuts because what government pays every month we used to make on a slow day,so please asshole just mind your own business and don’t worry about the chairs.

        • Anonymous says:

I’m not 6:10 but yeah move your f…….g chairs. It’s not like you have anything else to do and you are getting public money….earn your stipend.

        • Anonymous says:

Hi. Im an asshole too. Kindly move your trailer trash, tetanus infested, rusty a$$ $#!T off our beaches!!

  12. Elvis says:

Sad that we have to have this year in year out when there are perfectly good steady jobs for these men and women of cayman to holddown in the oublic sector in hotels, resturaunts, supermarkets.

    • Anonymous says:

You think there are jobs in hotels now ? Lol

    • Anonymous says:

Trust me Elvis the crew that is working can only handle 2 weeks per year of work. No hotel would hire them.

Sorry to say buts its the truth.

    • Anonymous says:

All evidence to the contrary. Jobs need qualified workers. Not just someone to show up. Do what you can to live. If you can’t do anything then you should get nothing.

This seems much better value than the Turtle Farm.

    • Anonymous says:

If the supply of turtle stew is dismantled, we will dismantle whatever population is left.

Same people fighting against the turtle farm because “save muh turtles” will casually drive by KFC who employs mass chicken farms.

Can Austin Harris who I think is Prospect’s MLA get off his lazy ar$e and get this NiCE crew around Prospect ASAP. He clearly can’t live in our constituency or surely to god he’d do something about it.

  15. Anonymous says:

Stop paying people with out tax dollars to do work that should be done by anyone who commits a minor offense or dui community service. Why do I even try to suggest this anymore..

    • Anonymous says:

Moron this is not America we don’t pay taxes here, yeah maybe the prices here on island are higher than any where else in the world but the crown pays for everything.

      • Anonymous says:

And where do you think the money the Government uses to pay for everything comes from? And yet you call the original pointer a moron? Guess you can’t fix stupid.
