DP debate stirs up various prejudices

Health Minister Dwayne Seymour shares some of his ideas on sexuality with the LA

(CNS): Anti-gay rights bias and homophobia weren’t the only prejudices and odd reactions that politicians displayed over the last two days as they debated the Domestic Partnership Bill. From the opposition leader referring to the former governor as “that woman” to the health minister’s warning that women’s sexual drive increases during a full moon, the debate led some MLAs to reveal strange opinions as well as intolerance and discrimination towards some of their constituents.

Most of the MLAS who objected to the bill said they did so because of their Christian beliefs, despite the fact that the legislation has no connection to religion and would not change the institution of marriage.

The law provides a legal framework for couples to register relationships, both same- or opposite-sex, in order to access rights similar to those bestowed on married couples without entering into the institution of marriage, either because they chose not to or are prevented from doing so because they are a same-sex or transgender couple.

Nevertheless, as the registration of same-sex couples appears to some MLAs to equate to an acceptance of homosexual sex, many still objected to the bill. Despite displaying their religion on their sleeves, they appeared comfortable transgressing social decency with a combination of hate-speech, intolerance and judgement of others.

It is not the first time that the legislature has displayed such unabashed discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in Cayman during debates, and as on previous occasions other prejudices such as xenophobia, misogyny and religious intolerance were were also on full display.

Prejudice and discrimination against, and fear of, the LGBT community was, however, at the core of the debate.

Many MLAs repeated assertions that in the past, Caymanians who “were that way” had been happy with their lot, demanding no rights. Some politicians claimed that it was not until foreign gays arrived and raised such issues that a situation of “them and us” had been created and this once silent and happy minority began demanding rights that they did not deserve.

Independent LA Ezzard Miller (NS) was the only non-government MLA to offer his support for the bill. He was also considerably more tolerant than his colleagues, suggesting that, although some of his constituents wanted him to vote against the bill, he was not prepared to discriminate against anyone to please some voters.

“This is about doing what I believe is right for the people, for the country and even for the ultra-right Christian fanatics who take this hard line,” he said. He spoke about people who were telling them they opposed the legislation on the basis of “one verse or a chapter in the Bible in isolation”, which he said they used to try to prove that the efforts to legislate for domestic partnerships was wrong.

“I’ve got a whole list of verses from the Bible, and most of those versus contain sins and discretions that were equally bad as same-sex relations but they are ignored,” he said.

Miller said he believed the bill provides the necessary rights for “this minority group”, met the requirements of the court and protected the status of marriage, which he said had been the main concern from the Christian community.

On the government benches, Austin Harris (PRO) and David Wight (GTW) gave their support to the bill, alongside Cabinet members, Deputy Premier Minister Moses Kirkconnell, Commerce Minister Joey Hew, Financial Services Minister Tara Rivers and Finance Minister Roy McTaggart, who displayed much more tolerance and understanding of the rights of the LGBT community, regardless of professed Christian beliefs.

McTaggart said that the bill was about setting right a wrong that “has existed for many years” because of the inaction of the LA. He said it was less about same-sex unions than ending unchecked discrimination. “In today’s world discrimination has no place, especially when it comes to government,” he added.

Austin Harris said he might lose his seat by supporting the bill but he would still do so because “it was the right thing to do”.

However, some members of the government as well as the opposition were extreme in their condemnation of gay rights.

When Health Minister Dwayne Seymour moved on from his ideas that the full moon fuels women’s sexual desires and men should take advantage of this to help procreate and save the nation, as that was his main concern about gays, he went on to say that the LGBT community was trying to “bully us into submission”.

Displaying a misunderstanding of human rights, he questioned when “our rights will be protected” and suggested that people like him were being discriminated against because of their desire to protect the sanctity of marriage.

However, the Domestic Partnership Bill does not infringe on the Marriage Law and is meant to be a separate but functionally equivalent institution.

Meanwhile, Anthony Eden (SAV), a fundamentalist Christian, railed against human rights in general, as well as the “slippery slope” of condoning what he called an alternative lifestyle.

Eden appeared to bemoan the fact that they were losing the right to deride homosexuality without facing some form of consequence for displaying prejudice and intolerance toward the LGBT community, which he believed people should be allowed to do based on Biblical teachings. He also repeated previous claims that LBGT people pose a threat to children.

Between her condemnations of gay rights, Education Minister Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, who is also a Christian conservative, wore her political hat. Calculating the numbers, she urged her colleagues not to vote for the bill, in direct opposition to the premier’s request, and asked members to vote for God’s law, not man’s law. Comparing herself to various Biblical characters, she said there may be consequences if the bill failed, but “if I perish, I perish”.

The video footage of the debate which began Monday morning and ended late Tuesday evening is now available on the CIGTV YouTube channel (see below).

These dumb ass MLA’s keep referring to lifestyle “choice”. Who the hell would choose to be discrimated against? You cannot choose your gender, skin color, height, or sexual orientation. I realize this is a hard concept for most of them to grasp given their lack of education and common sense. If you ask any gay person they will tell you they knew their sexuality from a very young age, they did not decide one day they were going to be gay. That is like asking a straight person when did you decide to be straight. Intelligent design. Stop getting it twisted you LA morons.

There is a basis of fact to the Hon. Mr Seymours address. Between a Gibbous and full moon, there is more activity and positive ions discharged leaving sea life, fish and women more susceptible to the bait. I use the same cycle and coincided this with my visits to Royal Palms. Boy, the fish were biting, yes sah, they bit real good. It worked that well that I was barred eventually as I was suspected of being a professional.

An oldie but goodie, and worth re-printing:

Dr. Laura Slessinger is a well-known conservative talk show host. She has expressed very negative beliefs about homosexuality. She has firmly supported and advocated biblical morality on her TV and radio shows. The following is a tongue-in-cheek letter seeking Dr. Laura’s advice on applying biblical morality and religious duties in today’s world. Its author is unknown.

    Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When people try to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to follow them:

    a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord (Lev.1:9). The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

    b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

    c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness (Lev.15:19-24).The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

    d) Lev.25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?

I would suggest you be careful that you be careful in your cavalier thinking, for it may yet put a steak on your eye caused by an educated Caymanian who supports the bill. Enough of cryng us down, whether you are expat or whatever. We have been tolerant for quite a while, don’t push ya luck. Seriously.

Too many people who condemn Anthony Eden’s position on gays (sinful, evil, abomination) are themselves Christians who claim to respect, revere and believe in the accuracy of the Bible.

    Does not compute.

Eden’s problem is not brain damage, lack of education, or old age. His problem is that he sincerely believes the Bible and chooses to emphasize parts that are convenient to his worldview. Christians who reject him and support gays do the same thing. Think for two seconds, actually read the book. He’s not making up this stuff. His anti-gay, mean-spirited, primitive-minded intolerance rests on a firm Biblical foundation and is in line with traditional Christian behavior for 2,000 years.

This religion, like Judaism and Islam, is not only nonsensical and clearly made up, it’s also deeply immoral. It stands in opposition to human morality and social progress. If all this sounds like a crazy lie to you then please read the Bible again because you had to have missed a lot the first time. There’s a good reason no one is accusing Eden of heresy.

The anti-Eden Christians are trying to have it both ways. They want to be Bible believers AND decent/modern people. But this is dishonest and ultimately a drag on society because propping up and sugar-coating the real nature of this backward, anti-human religion ensures that we keep producing some number of Anthony Edens generation after generation.

Why shouldn’t there be some standard level of education needed to qualify for
    1. To vote

    2. To run for election.
I’m not talking degrees or even a high school diploma.
The bar could start at let’s say, being able to count backwards from 100 to zero and get there in less than……100 minutes
Or just be able to comprehend why a wise 500 year old man like Noah didn’t have the common sense to build a few lifeboats for the Ark in the very likely event that a giraffe, a jackass and water buffalo might go berserk and knock a few holes in it.

I want nothing to do with any of the churches that you attend. There is not a single Christian bone in any of your bodies. For the most part, quite often not just today, you display hypocrisy, intolerance, bigotry, condemnation, insults, unexcusable fear, denial of yourselves, your family, and even your friends the uttermost right to enjoy the recognition of their unions by law.

I dare you so-call Christians to remember you too will be judged by the same God you same to think is pleased with you today. As the most powerful quote goes “Let no man without sin cast a stone.”

Remember for sake of humility and humbleness “ever time you utter Amen in your homes and in your places of worship, a child is listening.” This quote comes from one of the most powerful films on this same very topic that I DARE EVERYONE TO WATCH. Sooner than later I hope because it might just open your eyes and with much hope your hearts.

Because believe you me, the one who clutched the Bible closest within that honorable house had the most hatred within them. Love one another. This is two consenting adults not multiple people, gender, or pedophilia (which is wrong, period, and much more common in heterosexuals!)

Please do not fall for the Premier faux emotions of concern. He knew that Cabinet members in his Unity government Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, Dwayne Seymour and Capt. Eugene Ebanks were never going to support this bill neither was the Co-Leader of this government and Speaker McKeeva Bush. Their voting base was clear and like every politician they will do whatever it takes to guarantee reelection.

Alden McLaughlin has been a two term Premier and had 7 years to address this issue and educate the country on the reality of the situation. He has failed to engage in the requisite level of public education and engagement on such a polarizing topic. This bill was rushed and seemed incomplete. He does not deserve sympathy. He is now a lame duck Premier and dangerous because he has been embarrassed yet again and betrayed by members of his own government. Why did he bring this bill at this time? There is more to this story than the public are being told.

Listening to the quality of the debate or lack thereof it is evident that the bar for leadership in Parliament is low in Cayman. Cayman deserves better candidates and leaders that understand what representation includes and the value of transparency and accountability. I was horrified to listen to the double speak, half truths, bible thumping and vitriol that was spouted by both sides of the floor. Caymanian voters must demand better and refuse to accept the fake tears and long empty speeches from the members on the Government bench and the Opposition.

The way the Premier has handled key moments like the Domestic Partnership Bill, the People’s Initiated Referendum, about the cruise port project and even the Legal Practitioners Bill are proof that his arrogance and lack of respect for the people is why he has been exposed as a failed leader that is detached from the mood of the people as he captains a sinking ship of rats.

They would prefer SSM be implemented via a court appeal or order in council than be the ones responsible for passing a civil unions regime in order to keep their precious hands clean

At the end of the day every single person who voted no has made the calculation that they can run in 2021 fully embracing far right reactionary anti gay sentiments to prop up their campaigns as a defining issue

The opposition especially is looking for a defining issue to centre their campaigns on, the Unity Gov, love them or hate them will be running on the as of yet successful response to the COVID 19 crisis and the port issue has been left by the wayside which leaves the opposition MLAs of which there are now 7 out in the cold, they cannot take credit for much and the past 4 years have been especially slow in terms of passed substantive legislation
It is exactly what Anthony Eden did in 2017 for those who remember he ran an essentially single issue campaign on protecting and upholding traditional Caymanian values, he didn’t campaign, he didn’t attend events he simply made it clear he was taking a hyper-conservative reactionary stance regardless of shifting opinions and that was enough to get him reelected

This is quite clearly a show being put on by members of the opposition like Kenneth Bryan and Arden Mclean in preperation for 2021 plain and simple

The reason Cayman remains undefended by the UK against FATF/CFATF onslaught of regulation (which includes Cayman being criticized for not having certain frameworks in place that the UK doesnt have and isnt criticized for – is because our loss is their gain as a competitor. Let’s lose the motherland BOTC narrative, we are competitors so not implementing DP legislation for us will allow Cayman to sink itself and make the UK all the more attractive.

We “belong” to the UK but we are still very much the UK’s competition.

Newsflash to the bigots in the Assembly: If 2 men or 2 women marry, it takes nothing away from you — except perhaps your ridiculous illusion that you are “superior”. For heaven’s sake, wake up to 2020. Why are you so obsessed about what goes on in the bedroom of 2 men or 2 women? Are you repressing your own homosexual inclinations? I am gay, and I’ve faced a lot of discrimination in my lifetime — the very discrimination that you dole out so carelessly on the floor of the Assembly.
