Small dump fire now extinguished
(CNS) UPDATED THURSDAY: The small fire discovered at the George Town dump yesterday (Wednesday, 20 May) is now thought to be extinguished. An update from the Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) around noon today said that fire officers had “maintained a watching brief overnight” and that “no smoke or fire is now evident at the scene”.
Crews from CIFS and the Department of Environmental Health (DEH) worked quickly to excavate and dampen down the affected area yesterday to resolve the incident, and following the overnight monitoring, the site was handed back to DEH this morning.
The duty crew from Central Fire Station will make periodic checks throughout today for reassurance, CIFS said.

LOL
Maybe the CIG needs to look into building an incinerator as Bermuda did. Their so called dump is now a composting facility. Google garbage & recycling, Government of Bermuda
Nah, Cayman likes Dump-flavored smoke permeating the island. It adds distinction to a Caribbean destination. DoT should add it to in-flight “Cayman Airways Skies“.
Dump causing cancer but you lot are scared of covid killing you. Hilarious.
Move the dump.
Premier is busy saving lives from coronavirus so people would die faster from the Dump’s poisons, smoke and leachate. Way to go? Hooray! 👍
What a legacy Premier and his team will be leaving. I wouldn’t want to leave this earth with people condemning me for generations or to pay for my “sins” in the next incarnation.
7.43pm Feel for you, live in town. windows open and smelt it, seems even worse tonight. Minister of Health too concerned with himself getting his fish order, preaching and sniggering to care.
There was no mention of systems to vent gases from DEH Mr. Simms or unnamed Dart rep in this week’s press release on the capping project. Seems like they will depend on regular and dangerous flare-ups of uncontrolled fires!!
Or methane explosions. The gas from decaying organic material has to go somewhere.
The dump is perfectly safe. Covid-19 is the only concern Aldean has. (Sarcasm and truth)
The fumes from the dump fire right now in the Seven Mile Beach area are dreadful! You can’t go outside otherwise you will get that scratchy feeling in your throat and then end up coughing through the night! I think the Minister for Health should drive down here right now and experience what the local community have been putting up with, after all it is a very serious HEALTH issue and needs to be dealt with! Our health is being compromised at a time when we are trying our best not to get sick from the Covid 19 virus and all we hear is crickets from an indifferent government!!!
Dwayne “Big Boy” Seymour is hard at work learning the Elvish language and doesn’t have the time to be bothered with such minor tribulations.
Richard Simms as director of DEH needs to issue a statement.
Yes and it might go something like this: Currently the dump fire is under control after going into deep hiding. When it comes out of hiding again we will do our best to bring it under control again. Lastly there has always been a dump fire and will always be at least one.
Is this the same one that was “extinguished” in January?.
Its the second wave. The fire was not properly isolated and eradicated last time. and has re emerged once precautions at the dump were relaxed.
Again, not a new fire, it is the same one that has been burning for years. Just capping without a plan to deal with gas buildup is a recipe for disaster.
Thought Darts capping plan including venting and burn off of gas
6.17pm Of course it does but that don’t stop the rumour mongers on here from writing their own narrative.
6:15 Check the latest fire story! It doesn’t look like this is separate fires, it’s flare ups from one big fire – the dump itself is burning.
Whatever Dart’s plans are, the big problem with any ‘vent and burn’ plan is composition of the gases being given off. Nobody seems to know exactly what is being emitted, the only thing you can be certain about is it isn’t only nice clean methane produced by natural decomposition. It’s likely to include the by-products of chemical reactions from all the c*** that’s been dumped there over the years and some of those are extremely toxic.
Bottom line – a huge problem with no simple fix, however much money you’ve got.
What plan? Got a link to where its been published that we can confirm one way or the other? – And remember, this isn’t the ‘plan Govt. says they agreed to’ because that’s not actually been signed off on by both parties that supposedly agreed to it.
5:18 Good point. As long as it burns the gas isn’t building up but if you trap it one day it will go BOOM!!!!! Anyone out there remember a crazy guy with long white hair called ‘Dude’? That was his theory about how this would all end.
How is Dude not seen him for years.
Creedence and White Russians, man.
“Sometimes, there is a man…”
Me neither, last time was in Rackams and that was a long while ago. I first met him in the old Seaview – great memories 🙂
Soon BOOM!
Whenever I want to blame someone for something I did I just blame it on my friend “Boom.”
