(CNS): The Cayman Islands Postal Service will stop all international mail service from Monday, 23 March, for three weeks, officials have said, even though cargo planes are not part of the air service ban introduced by government yesterday. The CIPS said the suspension of services was related to the restrictions on international flights as well as stopping the spread of COVID-19.

In a press release, the postal service said it was now processing international mail as a matter of urgency and asked customers to clear their post office boxes of notification slips to ensure that they collect outstanding parcels or registered mail by Friday, 20 March.

Officials also asked customers not to make any further internet orders from overseas vendors until air transportation to the Cayman Islands has returned to the normal level of service.

For now, domestic mail will continue to move between islands and post offices will remain open to provide other counter services to the public, the CIPS said, noting that they will inform the public of any changes.

    Is it April 1st?

This is likely an effort to stem the sending of sanitizers and masks overseas.

Mail comes in on international passenger flights. So…..no flights (airport is closed to passenger flights from Sunday) means no international mail.

Therefore, it is NOT the Post Office’s fault there’s no international mail coming to Cayman.

And KX will not still be flying cargo, the mail will still find a way to come in, I really believe this was very irresponsible of the Govt and the PO to close international mail.

During WWI and WW2 mail was delivered to soldiers, often it was following them as they were never stationary. Undelivered mail was returned to senders. Just think about it!!!

In 18 century mail was transported by stagecoaches and steamboats. The horses were changed every 10 to 15 miles at the relay stations. Yet it was always delivered in a timely manner.

In Bermuda mail delivered to physical addresses, just like everywhere else in the world. Receiving a package in a Post Office is straightforward and easy.

An island country that doesn’t have effective and efficient postal service, doesn’t understand its economic and social importance is a 3d world country.

“Timely” is relative. Grow some patience and empathy, instead of always worrying about your schedule.

Being in isolation I’am listening to audiobooks, mostly famous works of literature from the past. What caught my attention is how relatively fast continental mail was delivered back then. In England and other European countries, even in the vast spaces of Russia.

There weren’t any steamboats in the 18th century. Otherwise I agree.

This is heartbreaking for me. My dad is from the old school who loves and appreciates the art of letter writing. He has written to me for the past 33yrs, since I was 21. Since I left home to come here. He is now 84. This is beyond hurtful, and quite honestly not needed by this Government! What is wrong with you? You have so much to anwer for. The mail? What next? Shame on you! You just broke some hearts.

Screw up the things that are still working to make it even more difficult to live here and make damn sure it will take forever to get back to normal. Just what I expected. Trying to take you island back?

So if after 3 weeks of a shut down and no one notices any difference in the level of service, should the Post Office be reopened ?!

This reminds me of that time when Juju and her pals jetted off to Africa for three weeks to collect a reward recognising the Cayman Islands Postal Service. I don’t recall what specifically it was for, either “most resemblance to a welfare scheme” or “most ridiculous junket by the Cayman government” although there’d be some strong competition for that one. I see not much has changed.

Ok. So we are getting food/medical supplies but not mail?
Why do I have to collect my parcels by Friday?
I can send mail between the islands so the Post Office won’t be shut, but they & Customs can’t handle my parcels already here???? WTF.

Yeah it makes no sense. The post office is open for post between the islands, but they will ignore the pile of post that came from overseas after Friday. SMH. This is a disgraceful attempt to take advantage of the Covid-19 situation to avoid doing any work. Not that they do much at the best of times. The govt should refuse to pay them unless they can demonstrate an actual need to stop working.

The Post Office is the most inefficient, idle, teeth-sucking department of government. It’s a throwback to the 70’s: badly-led, entitled, slow as hell, and they treat the public with contempt.

This is just being used as an excuse to do even less work. And imagine how long they’ll take to clear the backlog when they finally deign to handle international mail again. Two, three months at least.

CIG, we support you in your efforts against coronavirus at the moment. But this is a step too far.

I do have to say that the Post Office worked well in the 70s. They has a lady there who if an envelope had no box number on it would be able to identify which box it should go in. Unfortunately I cannot remember her name but she was a star. To be fair you could get things done then.

This is going to be a real pain for those of us who rely on our Social Security checks to survive.

This is completely unnecessary. The government has explicitly said that cargo is not affected by the restrictions and there is no reason why mail deliveries cannot continue. It’s just an excuse for a paid holiday (and not a very good excuse at that).

We have the worst postal system known to humanity. I frequently have to have mail sent to me two or three times from overseas because it just vanishes or gets returned to sender despite a valid address and valid postage paid.

With any luck we will all find suitable alternatives using courier services so that we have no need for them to ever re-open. Then we can stop funding the postal service completely.
