Speaker McKeeva Bush makes a speech to mark 35 years in the Legislative Assembly

(CNS): House Speaker McKeeva Bush took aim at a former party political colleague on Thursday, when he rose from his chair to deliver a statement on the day he celebrated 35 continuous years as an MLA. He spoke about the privilege of serving the people of West Bay, but it wasn’t long before he was taking swipes at members in the Legislative Assembly. And without naming Bernie Bush, he accused him of insinuating improper motives before he crossed the floor last month.

In a rambling speech, jumping around from subject to subject, what was clear was his attack on his West Bay colleague, his support for the current government and his belief that, despite being speaker, he should be allowed to speak and was happy to declare his bias.

He berated West Bay North MLA Bernie Bush as he quoted his comments about not being “for sale” when he left the government bench following the referendum debate.

“Utterances, impugning improper motives and insinuating bad comments that can bring members… into disrepute is unacceptable… No member need to play lily white as our people know us all… I listen; I have to. When any member impugned members… by slight handed reference, especially in this environment when some use the referendum as a campaign of securing their seat in the next election, I am not going to tolerate that… When you say you are not for sale you are impugning members,” Speaker Bush said.

He suggested that by saying he was not for sale, he was implying that his colleagues were. “Especially when I know you’re lying… I know who’s lying,” the speaker added.

Speaker Bush implied that this put members in danger of being threatened, just as he and other members were when they put the labour legislation in the law many years ago.

McKeeva Bush went on to laud the current PPM-led government and admitted he was being political when he declared that it was the best governance model since he was elected. The budget for 2020/21 was the best over that 35 years he had served, even for 50 years, he declared, ordering the MLA for GTC to sit down after he rose to interject.

The youtube link on my screen shows him and the words “Legislative Ass…” It couldn’t be any more appropriate. How can you be a NEUTRAL speaker of the house yet make statements like this. It is so disrespectful to your position that act like you do and treat it the way you do. What a joke you are, it’s time you retire or be retired.

Don’t let Bernie fool you….he was with the opposition from the beginning…jumped ship to save his a$$…it is not easy baking breads….c’mon Cayman, you have a lot of smart people in your country…asked your government for a referendum for a “national vote”… ensure that people like Mr. Panton and Mr. Archer is managing your country affairs. Just look at how the conduct inside the legislative assembly for 2013 to 2017 verses 2017 to present. Quite a shame at present…and it is going to get worst when the remainder of their cohorts is elected….Biggest mistake ever….one man one vote…Alden created this…hope the port don’t end up like this… (National Vote)

Say what you want about the rest of our political system but OMOV is probably the best thing that ever happened to this country

Splitting up the people who would have otherwise just ticked down the ballot and put 6 PPM Members in via George Town
The PPM is now unable to get the same number of elected members without Bodden Town

It is the only reason we do not have an outright PPM majority shoving this port down our throats
OMOV, ‘supported’ by Alden and ironically it was the stumbling block to his election plans

He probably kicked himself that night watching those results come in

Thanks West Bayers. Great job giving us 35 years of this baby Trump in the LA. He’s played a significant role in the decline of Cayman in so many areas, but whatever. At least you got washing machines, paved driveways, and a few hundred dollar bills here and there, right? Totally worth it, I’m sure.

@2:49 People like you need to stop broad brushing all West Bayer’s as being responsible for electing this man! That’s like saying all people from GT elected Alden.

Yes I am from WB, but did not vote for him for several decades, and I embarrassed whenever he makes an utterance.

That said, unfortunately there are many in our district that are and have been brainwashed for many, many years! So, to some extent, I can understand fools like you from other districts as well.

What does this say about West Bay voters, are they simpletons or is there a dark force present that gauarantees their votes for this man over 35 years with his record.

The day when he no longer serves will be the rise of a new bright future for Cayman, I hope the people of West Bay after a generation finally see they deserve better representation than this handsy buffoon

Let me translate some of his speech for those who are new here:

“…in the interest of the people of these islands” = I have served myself and very well thank you!
“…the growth and maturity displayed by members of this house” = I’m not talking about myself.
“…it is admirable and advisable that members continue to portray ethical and morally acceptable practices as we execute our functions in this honourable house” = While I admire other members that might have some semblance of moral and ethical foundation I will continue to kid myself that I’m held to a higher standard.

On a final note, if he wasn’t wearing that wig I could have sworn he was talking out of his a$$.
