Bush uses Thanksgiving message to push port

House Speaker McKeeva Bush delivers a Cayman Thanksgiving video message

(CNS): The speaker of the Legislative Assembly, who is increasingly ignoring the usual protocol of remaining neutral about controversial political issues, has used a Thanksgiving message to push the government’s port project and take a veiled swipe at its opponents. McKeeva Bush said that while he was minded not to be on the offense, as he once would have been, he intended to defend himself against his critics on this issue, calling the port debate the “biggest political football in our history”.

Speaking in a video message to mark the local Thanksgiving celebration on Sunday, Bush said that “pumping it up with misinformation and emotive rhetoric” would be to the determent of those whose livelihoods depended on cruise tourism, which would “fall by the wayside without proper facilities”.

Among his Thanksgiving best wishes Bush also bragged about the success of the coalition Government of National Unity, in which he joined forces with his former arch political enemy, Premier Alden McLaughlin. He said it had just delivered the best budget ever and was going to be doing lots of things that would make the next decade great for Caymanians.

“How can anyone say otherwise,” he said, as he took aim at those willing to criticise the government and urged people who did not feel they were benefitting to contact government and “talk to us”.

McKeeva claims when he speaks out on political matters as Speaker, he’s conducting his duty as MLA representative for WBW. Seems like he must be correct because no one (Governor) sanctions him and no one (Premier) dissuades him.

Guess he can have his cake and eat it too! Hmmm?

Mac promised to build the dock in the North Sound as a backdoor deal for Dart.

He is getting his way, along with the help of many others who are going all out to stop the GT Dock development.

Ask how many of those persons also moved aggregate for Dart to hep build the E. Tibbetts Bypass?

This entire Port project is the doing and at the direction of McKeeva Bush and NOT the Premier. Let me explain what I have just said. Big Mac has ALWAYS wanted a dock- we remember the fiasco with CHEC and others. Now that he is the glue holding this Unity Goofernment (intentional spelling) together- he is pushing the port project and directing Alden and Moses to push it through if they want to remain in power- its sort of like a ransom. Do what I say or I will leave the Unity Government and possibly cause the entire party to mash up.So Alden is doing just that and pushing the dock to remain Premier.

I do not for one minute believe that Alden honestly supports this dock- he knows better but he is at the mercy of Mac and knows what will happen should he oppose.

If we have a leader so weak he can be blackmailed, who doesn’t have the gumption to call BS and stand up to bullying, then we have no leader. Or this could be you spinning a tale for when the referendum fails and Alden needs an excuse to stay in power. Whilst I don’t like Alden, or Mac come to that, I suspect Alden is not that spineless. If he is, we need new politicians and now.

      19
    • Anonymous says:

Movement, I agree generally with your assessment. Mac does have Alden over a barrel but Alden chose that barrel because he wanted to be Premier because of his ego. Where I disagree is that Alden really does support the dock. Look at his track record. He, like Mac, believes in grandiose projects as monuments to themselves that will guarantee cost overruns and future tax increases. That was his vision and reality when thinking it was possible to build 5 schools simultaneously. A clear thinking leader would have thought of the possible reasons why that approach would be unwise. Now together with Mac, Moses and Kurt Tibbetts (who is still their puppet master) Alden wants to be known for the dock regardless of the cost financially and environmentally. He is now trying to back pedal from painting himself into a corner. When arrogance, backstabbing and treachery fails, he will always plead ignorance. You may not know Alden, but many people now realise who he is.

He and like him just don’t understand that their time is over. Intimidation is not going to work anymore. Younger generations think differently, want and do things differently . They are left with environmental mess, toxic waste, social division based on religion, race and sexual orientation, BUT they’re going to fix it and they would start with dethroning the entire LA. They (LA members) could continue throwing verbal fits, embarrassing themselves, but not for much longer. The could continue Monaco, Hollywood trips while such events like “Feed our future” at Kimpton embarrass the nation with 2bil. budget, but not for much longer.

when a man is too old to be a clerk or a gardener or a police-court magistrate, isn’t it rather strange that he believes he is ripe to “run” a country? When mental agility and ability of a person declines as he gets older why is he allowed to rule a nation? Virtually everyone loses memory-making and cognitive abilities as they age, just saying.

Very good point and there should be a term limit set in place to prevent politicians from 30 years of service. That’s just too much repetition in my view, it’s why not many changes have occurred on this island. I trust that my generation and the younger ones can take us forward.

Its like watching Amazon destroy circuit city and toys r us or to put it in their words like Ivan hitting they house.

They are totally stunned and for the first time in a long time totally irrelevant and almost getting to a point where they are illegitimate. A paper government only.

Let’s get real this port ..it will never be built ..good job wasting $9 million (add to they list of waste) and if it by some miracle is built these old frogs are going to end up in a newly formed Environmental Genocide court in Europe that will be formed in the next 10-15 years. They will be put up for crimes against the earth and their wealth will be confiscated and kids will have to disown their legacy. In less than 5 years they will end up on some sort of blacklist or sanction list for crimes against humanity and no more jet setting around.

They too fool to see that future though but a fitting end to a bunch of fat frogs.

Start a “What the Youths Know” show. Ask basic questions. You will be shocked about the “generation knowledge gap”.

Develop and train the youths. When they are “ready” the electorare will know.

Oh, there will ALWAYS be race, religion, sexual orientation et al division. (Well, until robots take over).

Anonymous at 7.49 said that when Bush supports something, best oppose, unless “you are in for a piece”
When anyone supports something that all logic and reason demonstrates is wrong, then yes there must be something outside the discussion that is influencing him. In his case, this has been going on for so long, it is reasonable to wonder what that might be. Well, at one stage, the recommended contractor (do I remember this right?) was sacked by him, and replaced by a Chinese group with a dreadful reputation for interesting business inducements. That was years ago, and still he supports the unsupportable, Why? Maybe 7.49 has a point!
Anyway, the problem has been made much easier to judge, Candy Whicker has laid out the questions, and gives reasonable answers, so all Bush has to do is read , yes I know it hurts but just do it, and he can reach the right conclusion, albeit he is supposed to be neutral, but we never expected him to meet those minimum requirements!

Then his Twitter fingers take over after the Zacapa gods have talked to him then it’s hysterical watching the man take on the world on Facebook to only embarrass himself, Premier Alden and the unity crew of jokers.

Cayman Thanksgiving is a weekend-long national celebration to honour Caymanian heritage, culture and way of life. This is a time for fellowship among family, friends and neighbours while allowing an opportunity for our Caymanian community to express gratitude for our many blessings. This weekend celebration will culminate on the first Sunday of December, centred around a traditional Caymanian meal. #GiveThanksCayman

However he has fooled the most educated legislators over the years so is obviously no fool. Smarts being used for personal gain and self preservation.
Alden is educated and his first act when being elected was to join ranks with McKeeva, after splitting for years he is back in the fold and by the looks of it he is McKeeva’s puppet.
