Al La Kebab truck

(CNS): Two members of staff working on the Al La Kebab truck in Red Bay were injured late Friday night when two masked, armed men robbed the food-stop at the top of Selkirk Drive. Police said that the stick-up happened just before midnight, when the men, who were dressed in black and carrying a firearm, approached the employees. They pistol whipped one of them and assaulted the other before they made off with a quantity of cash. Uniform and firearm officers responded to the scene, where the employees were treated for minor physical injuries.

Detectives said that the robbers are believed to have left the scene in a vehicle. At least two other people, believed to be customers, were possibly on scene at the time of the robbery and the police are asking them to come forward.

This is the second time in less than five months that the truck has been robbed. In July two armed robbers, one armed with a machete and the other a handgun, who fired shots in the air during the hold-up, escaped with cash and an employee’s handbag.

Anyone with information can reach out to detectives directly at 936-0759, send the police a tip online via the RCIPS website, or call Crime Stoppers at 800-8477 to remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward.

I think a great solution to this problem is for someone to grow some balls and tip off the authorities as to who is responsible.

This bullshit “I’m not an informer” attitude allows this stupidity to perpetuate.

Have you considered what the death penalty for using a firearm illegally would do for criminals with guns?

Not much. Death penalty really doesn’t dissuade people doing stuff. It may make them regret it, after the event… but it’s no good as a deterrent.

Seriously. Thumbs down to a comment rooted in reality.

Countries that still use the death penalty, do they now have zero murders or violent crime?

The death penalty does not work as a deterrent. 5 minutes of research would illustrate this FFS.

Facts and research don’t affect the death penalty supporters. They are more “University of Life” gut feeling people, for whom the post-factual world of Trump and Brexit makes sense. Experts and research are an annoyance whether that be on the impact of death penalty, climate change or what would happen on a “no-deal” Brexit. The single highest correlated opinion on political issues among voters in the UK was the link between death penalty support and support for a Leave vote.

Errr you can look at data from countries where the death penalty has been used and now isn’t, or vice versa.

That dumb logic means you can’t prove that seatbelts have saved lives either.

        • Anonymous says:

You’re basically suggesting that every person that commit murder are fully prepared to accept capital punishment. No, many murderers simply feel they can get away with it and some don’t. Those that don’t, are deterred. Those that didn’t think they would get caught and do, cry like little bitches when they are sentenced to death and serve as a good example to other potential criminals .

My suggestion to the Al La Kebab owners is to put security cameras at the window, they are inexpensive these days and will go a long way as a deterrent or for identification.

Have no sympathy for those kind of people that are disrupting everyone’s life and style . Do those places that get robbed raise the price of their food after they have been robbed ? If so , then it’s the good people who are paying for the robbery .

The only solutions I can think of are as follows:

1.) allow vendors and/or security guards to carry firearms for self-defense

2.) Night-time vendors accept only cards after a certain time

3.) Businesses close after sunset (which is unlikely to happen anytime soon).

4.) a more robust CCTV like they have in the UK.

5.) Some combination of the above (perhaps 1 and 2 with emphasis on 2).

Anyone else have any short-term solutions to the problem while we formulate long-term solutions?

Oh that’s no myth. It’s just because gun laws restrict where legal gun owners can bring them and 99% of the time it’s gun free areas where these crimes take place.

      • Anonymous says:

Fighting guns with guns will only lead to bloodshed like in the US? Last time I checked it’s criminals with illegal guns fighting cops. How many “shoot outs” are between gun owning law abiding citizens and criminals with illegal guns. You can only fight guns with guns. At this point you and others I’m sure will be fuming saying if we had more gun control we’d have less guns but how many criminals obey gun laws? Only law abiding citizens do and it’s the unarmed law abiding citizens suffering because they cannot defend themselves.

        • Anonymous says:

Last time you’ve checked must have been a really long time ago.
For the facts show that most, if not all of the massacres in the US where inflicted by either good law abiding citizens(sometimes with military experience)or firearms that are legal and owned by law abiding citizens, and in some cases those powerful weapons where purchased straight from the gun stores and on to the slaughtering of innocent people at places where least expected.
We all here in Cayman should forever be so grateful that the crime here hasn’t escalate to that level so far, and what crimes are committed here should be properly investigated with proper CCTV (like the UK) and in time, being that we are in a very small island those responsible will be brought to justice.
Please ignore the pleas of having no gun control, please don’t make the same mistake that America has made, just use them for example, and please help assist the police with any information regarding anything to do with illegal firearms, even if you happen to glimpse an individual with one 10 out of 10 it’s illegal.

          10
          2
          • Anonymous says:

Umm nope.. wrong..more than half of the massacres in the US were done by people who took the guns FROM law abiding citizens because they couldn’t get them themselves or were able to get guns because other government agencies failed to do their part to make sure the sale of the weapons didn’t happen. a few people with military backgrounds that showed PTSD and other mental issues but it wasn’t reported to NICS for example.

I’m not saying having no gun control. There needs to be gun control absolutely so but when it takes 15 minutes for the cops to show up you need to defend yourself. And i’m not saying arm them with rifles, use handguns.

I don’t understand why the Business community don’t get down on the government about this issue where their business are being robbed and they could have a security guard hired , but the security guard is in fear for his own life when confronted by say two armed robbers because he can’t protect himself . So the security guard is hired but your business still got robbed and your profits continue to go to the scumbags .

    19
    • Anonymous says:

When you consider how much security guards are paid for their services, I doubt any of them are going to jeopardize their life. I say allow business owners, operators and law-abiding citizens to obtain firearm licenses.

Deterrence.. If they know the food shack employees are armed they would think twice about robbing them and for those who think guns are bad. How many times has a law abiding business been robbed at GUN POINT. I’d wager my house that the guns being used are ILLEGAL to which no amount of gun law would have prevented. Only the innocent are being harmed here, law abiding ones at that. I hope they arm themselves and the next time they are robbed they serve up a hot dish for those bastards.

What difference would that make 9.32 pm?? Use of drop safes is only practical defense, and promote the use of cards for payment. One mobile food vendor cannot stand alone against an out of control crime wave. That’s what happens in the Caribbean when so called human rights get more backing than realistic crime fighting! In days of old “crime fighting” was the order of business, and now we hear bullshit terms like “crime management.” When criminals destroy your society and people generally suffer, whose human rights get priority, the criminals, or the defenseless people? Time for those who run our “security” to decide where they stand on this issue!!

      • BeaumontZodecloun says:

        You’re right, Mike.

We are not even allowed the simple self-defense capsicum or pepper spray. Nonlethal, impermanent but temporarily debilitating. Each canister has a serial number on it.

The RCIPS could hold safety classes one had to take in order to qualify for the right to carry. Lost cannisters don’t get replaced. You have to turn one in to get a new one.

I had a conversation with a friend of mine, who is a police officer. I indicated that I may begin carrying a walking stick everywhere I went. A real stick made of Spanish Elm (spashelm). Even that, apparently, is a sticky wicket, because if used in my own self-defense, it then becomes an ‘offensive weapon’. It boggles my mind that a person could be convicted of excessive force when defending their own lives!!!!!!!!!

Totally screwed, we are. We should be able to carry a walking stick and use it in our natural defense. We should be able to carry pepper spray.

Criminals are cowards. Almost any deterrant works, IF the citizens are allowed to use them.

The security forces need the backing, the budget, the training, and the strategy to regain control and get the criminals off the streets once and for all.
