Christmas tree recycling begins island-wide
(CNS): The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) has placed collection skips at six locations across Grand Cayman for the public to put their natural Christmas trees for the annual mulching programme. As well as reducing the waste going to the dump, the scheme gives gardeners a chance to collect free mulch after the trees are shredded. Residents are urged to remove all wires and ornaments from the trees before they are placed into collection bins.
The bins will be at the following locations until 19 January:
- Ed Bush Stadium, West Bay
- George Town Cricket Field
- George Town Landfill public drop-off area
- Spotts Dock
- Entrance of Frank Sound Road
- Front of George Dixon Park, East End
The Christmas trees will then be removed and shredded with the mulch available to the public at the George Town Cricket Field on Saturday, 20 January, from around 8 a.m. Mulch will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis and people are invited to come out early with shovels and bags for the removal of the mulch.
Meanwhile, as people clear up after the holidays, the DEH also reminded everyone that PET bottles, tin/aluminium cans, paper and cardboard, as well as glass can be deposited at the supermarket drop-off sites for recycling.

I love to burn Christmas Trees in an open fire while smoking a bag of good Jam Rock Bud! Add some savory left overs and hhhhhhmmmmmmm its a Caribbean New Year!
This is okay, but wouldn’t it be better to have an Island wide pick up? I do not have anyway to get my tree to the mulching area, so I am guessing many other people also do not have a way to get their tree there as well. Why not have a tree collection day for DEH?
They can’t even pick up garbage properly and you think that they are going to be able to pick up Christmas trees
You managed to get the tree into your house so I’m sure you can figure something out.
I do love a good mulching.

Pretty sure they have bigger issues to concern themselves with. This should be a private sector initiative.
So we can be charged to drop off the trees and charged again for the mulch afterwards? That’s a good way to grow Mount Trashmore.
This is exactly the sort of sustainable projects the DEH should be doing, good on them.

Government is projecting a budget surplus, and have had previous surpluses and they can’t afford to pick up trash really?
They can pay MLAs all at least 9k per month (at a minimum, with some making much much more) and they can’t afford to pick up the trash, you keep telling yourself that
Those fees are suggestive only, if one is a registered voter.
Any time the private sector want to step up and do this (for free) I’m sure the DEH would step back and let them go for it. …
