Laser interferes with cop chopper flight

(CNS): The RCIPS issued a warning that endangering aircraft is an offence after the police helicopter was targeted with a laser while on patrol Friday night, 3 November. Police said that while it was deployed on operations in the West Bay area, the chopper “was struck twice in quick succession by a high-intensity green laser light from the ground”. In a release Monday, officials said that they were not able to identify the exact location but the laser light appeared to come from around Finch Drive.

“Such activity presents a very real danger to the crew and public in that the lasers can cause temporary blindness,” officials said. Lasers not only pose a risk to the crew, they also distract them from their work and diverts resources away from other duties, officials stated.

Police warned that endangering any aircraft is taken seriously and offenders will be arrested and could face jail time.

Anyone with information regarding Friday night’s incident is asked to call the George Town Police Station at 949-422 or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS).

You do realize that your comment can be perceived as a threat, right? So either you’re very bold, or you’re very stupid.

there were green lasers at the sailing club on sat during the fireworks show..maybe the people responsible for the fireworks or someone working for the company had possession of them through the night… worth checking out…

One has to ask the question, who allows these things to be imported into the country? It is clear that Customs is doing a not very good job of ensuring that things this nature do not find their way into the Islands. This is a pretty dangerous thing for folks to be doing.

Have you been to school recently, say the last 15yrs or so?

Now there’s an astute observation. One should stop asking dumb questions and making people waste like 2.4 seconds of their lives reading your comment. It is so clear that Customs should be blamed for people using lasers, so clear. Thank you for clarifying that, y’know, cause I was wondering who to blame, but it’s Customs, those useless punks! DUDE…maybe YOU should be a Customs officer and then you can stop ALL of the illegal SHIT that comes into Cayman! Go for it!

It’s a Federal Homeland Security Crime in USA and Canada. Fines and 5yrs in federal prison. Here, it’s like, “cut it out please”.

Every thug in west will be out buying a laser now

I definitely would not want anyone lasering my chopper.

They’re lucky it was only a laser flying over West Bay.

They’ll be shooting at the chopper next.

So arrest them then; surely from bird’s eye view you could see where it was coming from.

Enough is enough man, the cops know who these punks are in each district and yet they just let them carry on with their idle behavior. We need a zero tolerance here like Singapore.

These punks don’t even get jail time for gun possession . No way you’ll keep them over this.

Lasers are illegal now and soon flashlights.

Flashlights are going to become illegal? oh FFS. Since the POLICE NEED THEM that should be an interesting law. Go watch TV or something. Stop posting on social media. You’re doing it wrong.
