Firefighters battle major South Sound blaze
(CNS): Firefighters were on the scene of a house blaze in South Sound Wednesday morning. The fire which was reported at around 6:40am at the home on Clayton Drive across from the oil terminals at Jackson Point was brought under control by firefighters by around 7am. The blaze appears to have started in, and been largely confined to, a double garage at the side of a two-storey property.
The Cayman Islands Fire Service have confirmed that they along with the police have begun an investigation into the blaze to determine the cause.

Reported at 06:40 and under control at 07:00. How in any way was this a major fire, dangerous, certainly inconvenient to the poor owners, but major?
Hope that insurance check comes in just in time for Christmas.
Our hearts go out to the Merren’s. They are wonderful, kindhearted people. This is the time that we show community spirit in caring & assisting our own. Let’s not tear each other down but always be willing to build each other up.
no fires in south sound!
It is such a shame that Cayman has really become a “crab in the bucket” community. Why always so negative and hurtful. Someone has tragically lost their home, or a least part of their home to a fire. No one knows what they have lost, either the financial, sentimental or emotional loss. What difference does it make what part of the Island they live in, whether they own or they rent. Either way who ever owns it must have worked or continue to work long and hard to own it. At any time of the year this is a sad situation but at the start of the holiday season it is even more disheartening. Furthermore, I am made to understand that they do not have insurance so this is really heartbreaking. Come on Cayman lets get back to standing together. Cayman Kind should not just be a word or literary motto but a way of life.
This family are proud Caymanians and would never ask for any form of charity, just the kindness of a ‘helping hand ‘. what ever happened to ‘kindness ‘ ?
Across from the fuel terminals eh? The ones with the faulty, non-regulation, fire-extinguisher systems? ok, cool.
Disaster waiting to happen
Don’t forget that the pipelines run straight to the airport from these terminals, the day they catch fire, the whole of GT will get leveled including the airport.
Oh Em Gee!!!
Are u just aware that the pipeline is there? Its been there almost 3 decades now. Why are you just bringing it up? Why didn’t you be an advocate or protester against it?
Maybe because he was only born 3 decades ago.
Pedantic yes, but that isn’t South Sound. South Church Street yes indeed, but South Sound, no. Must have been written by a Real Estate Agent.
Once I heard them say that Outpost road in the back of Windsor Park near Triple C is South Sound. Crazy, huh?
South Sound huh? Do you think donations will roll in for this one too? Or is that only for when it happens to lower income families?
Not everyone in South Sound is wealthy… a lot of these people worked very hard for what they have and this just so happens to be one of those people… Maybe you should wait for details before you are so judgmental… And Thank God that it didn’t happen to you or someone that you care about.
The difference is the South Sound residence was properly built (so it wasn’t a complete write off) and most likely insured.
Only lower income, because they dont have the resources. Insurance only covers part of the cost of repair. Architect, permits, clean up, temp housing etc comes out of your pocket.
Try to be more compassionate to your fellow humans.
Your insurance should cover Professional Fees and Debris Removal. If not find a better coverage.
Sorry to the home owners.
Also sorry to be the bearer of bad news but, having gone through this myself, I can tell you that claiming on your home insurance will be just as hard.
1) The first part is the Fire report. You will not be given this. It is only for the insurance company. I have asked here in GCM and have been refused access to the report as the legal home owner.
2) The police report will also be the same hassel. You need a certfied copy of your land certificate. Also on two seperate oçasions, and after speaking with two different people behind the glass counter, no one could decide wether the fee for the report was 100 or 25 CI and wether it took two or six weeks to get it.
3) Because hurricane Mathew hit Bahamas, all the insurance adjusters are there and arent available for at least another two months. I am not sure what impact this new storm will have on this timeframe.
I am sure there will be more redtape and hold ups again once i get through these first hurtles.
Only in Cayman.
Welcome to Cayman, where all the laws are written to protect insurance company thievery.
in my estimation insurance companies are the most LEGAL ILLEGAL THIEVES I have ever seen, trust me on that.
at 11.54am Why ‘ Only in Cayman ‘. I am sure there are delays in places other than Cayman.
How long did it take the new boat to get there?
and someone just said they(the firefighters) have nothing to do.
Paint, paint materials are known to cause fires in garages.
MAJOR BLAZE IN SOUTH SOUND!!! Equates to, “the blaze appears to have started in, and been largely confined to, a double garage”
So sorry for this very kind, humble family. What a terrible feeling it must be. I hope they were able to save family mementos and the like.
