Theresa May, the next British Prime Minister

(CNS): Theresa May will take up the post of the UK’s Prime Minister Wednesday night after her remaining rival in the leadership contest, Andrea Leadsom, dropped out of the race and David Cameron announced he would leave office after this week’s Prime Minister’s Questions. Speaking Monday outside the prime minister’s official residence in London, he said he was right to resign in the wake of the UK referendum result on leaving the European Union and congratulated his home secretary on winning the keys to No 10 Downing Street.

In the short statement to the press, Cameron said that there would not now be a prolonged leadership election and that Leadsom made the right decision to stand aside.

“It is clear Theresa May has the overwhelming support of the Conservative parliamentary party,” the departing British leader stated, adding that he was “delighted” that May had emerged as the new leader as she was strong and competent.

“She’s more than able to provide the leadership the country is going to need in the years ahead and she will have my full support,” he said. “On Wednesday I will attend the House of Commons for Prime Minister’s Questions. And then after that I expect to go to the Palace and offer my resignation, so we will have a new prime minister in that building behind me by Wednesday evening,” Cameron added.

May’s anointment came after Leadsom, a prominent Brexit supporter, said she was pulling out in the “best interests of our country” as a  nine-week battle was “highly undesirable” given the current circumstances and need for certainty.

Leadsom, the energy and climate change minister, acknowledged that she had less than 25% of the parliamentary party and not enough support to lead a stable government. The wider party membership will not now have a chance to choose their new leader, though May is understood to have significant support among the Tory faithful.

The resignation comes in the wake of a report in The Times over the weekend that Leadsom had indicated she felt she was best placed to win the contest because she was a mother while May has no children — comments that created enormous backlash and controversy for the PM hopeful.

    Congrats May.
You are the lucky PM of a country that just showed the world that its government hasn’t a clue as to what the people really want, desire or believe in.

    Awesome!

I would wish you “good luck” but … don’t see the point really.

    – Who

Theresa may or may not do a good job. We will find out soon enough, come what may. May the force be with her.

  3. New opportunities for Cayman says:

Time for Cayman to take up the chance to use this opportunity to get a seat for the Cayman Islands in the UK Parliament. If we take part in UK elections, we can influence more easily instead of relying on people like Lord Blencathra.

One day, a Caymanian could become PM of one of the world’s most important nations..

What a stupid comment. 52% of the U.K. population didn’t vote for Brexit only to see their parliament hijacked by a minute population devoid of any form of leadership or fiscal responsibility.
No my friend, the last thing that will ever happen is for a few thousand Caymanian voters having any influence over a nation of 65 million.
Of course, as the UK remains one of the most multi cultural nations on the planet, does not deny hard working residents their UN right to citizenship or uses religious or ‘cultural’ bigotry against minorities, anyone who wants to become an MP certainly can do. But then they wouldn’t be Caymanian any longer.

You, my village idiot cannot even be 40 years old. Did you see the majesty of the UK before the Common Market debacle? No you did not. Please be quiet. You have no idea of what you are talking about.

Please don’t hold your breath on that one, or you might expire.

Easily the shortest and most inexpensive campaigne ever, anywhere.

Hillary has spent probably quarter billion USD so far. Theresa May probably spent all of 10,000 pounds total.

Daughters and granddaughters of feminism doing the things their mothers and grandmothers dream of.

And one day their children or grandchildren will not end sentences with prepositions.

      • Ed says:

        12:53,
Never ending sentences with a preposition is a rule of grammar entirely made up by a couple of 18th-century grammarians who were attempting to apply the rules of Latin to English. It has never represented how English is actually used.
Male wrote “… the things their mothers and grandmothers dream of.” That is the way that people speak.
In your opinion, the correct syntax would be “… is the things of which their mothers and grandmothers dream.” That is clumsy and certainly not at all euphonic. You are just plain wrong.

I find the second version more lyrical.

          • Ed says:

And so do I but people don’t talk that way. There are countless sentences in Shakespeare’s plays that end with a preposition but they are all lyrical.
            1. “…such stuff as dreams are made on.”
            2. “I will wear my heart upon my sleeve for daws to peck at.”
            3. “Thou hast no speculation in those eyes which thou dost glare with.”
You try and rewrite those and retain the lyricism.

May’s choice is political blackops at its best. She supported remain and now she is going to lead the country in the opposite direction?
Pied Piper is more like it.
Truth is stranger than fiction. You could not make this shit up if you tried.

If you did not live in the UK before the disastrous Common Market assisted suicide, please don’t bother to comment as you will have no idea why the majority chose to leave.

  7. Unison says:

Women in leadership! Must be the end of the world! The men are not leading anymore, not even in their families … it looks like certain women of iron have to do the job. 😐
