John Gray High School

(CNS): All government schools on Grand Cayman, except for Prospect Primary and Clifton Hunter High schools, have closed for the day due to the power outage, the Department of Education Services has announced. The DES is deploying school buses to transport the students home. However, parents and guardians are advised that if their child is not on the schoo bus programme, they will need to pick them up from school.

All schools on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman remain open for regular school hours.

Yes, because sitting in a hot classroom with no ventilation and 20-plus complaining children is such a wonderful way to spend the day…

So if another Ivan comes again No School until power is restored by CUC ? We spent Millions on the Northside School and upgrades on others and they will be used as a Hurricane shelter’s also. But wait ! Only a cuple schools have stand by generation.
    Money Well Sent!

an as a reward all kids are getting an iphone and unlimited cupcakes, really? kids are dyingto have a school all over the world and this bratts can not do something useful, like cleaning the school, while they have no power and wait until 1:30??

Maybe there should be a default basic survival skills lesson in such circumstances. How to survive a hurricane. No electric and little else working, useful for all kids here

What the heck! Why on God’s green earth would you let almost all of the students to run loose when the power outage is Island wide? This was an exponentionally stupid decision.

Is the water also out when power goes out? If so, that would be a reason to send students home. No toilet flushing and no water to wash hands, but if it is just lights and AC…students can stay as they are only heading home to a hot house.

Problem is the public schools built without proper ventilation eg. sufficient windows and doors. The schools were designed with the thinking that A/C and electricity will be available when school is in session.

$60+mln spent on a derelicted “new”JGHS, but let’s makeover our functioning airport.

Look! Government schoolchildren from West Bay and George Town are being short changed in their high school premises daily. Compared to the quality of the buildings out East, the old sites are pitiful! The new site, if up and running today, would have had the same generator power as provided in Prospect and Clifton Hunter! Bottom line, schools in the larger districts have deprived students of half a day’s instruction. Therefore, there has been yet another advantage swung in favor of the East! Wake up, voters!

My kid goes to Catholic and they didn’t close, they opened the windows….

Because most public school windows can barely be cracked open as most are also hurricane shelters. I told the parents ( private school) of my students that I would be at school until the last of my class was collected and not to worry because they were in my care. Fortunately, I provide parents with my personal cell number and could put them at ease. Students were also a bit panicky as they saw others being collected.

What is the point of sending home the children, its hot at home. We have a bunch of idiots in education. CUC has advised power will be restored by 1:30 and our children are so spoilt they cant sit a few hours without power. What’s interesting the private schools and pre-schools are still open. This is why the system is sub par we use every opportunity not to teach. This would have been a good day to find an old school method of teaching i.e. using a good old fashion board or sitting under a tree and having a discussion. Not to mention the classrooms are air conditioned it will not be that hot if the doors are kept closed.I once again proud of the private schools and disappointed in the public schools.

This is crazy going to create organized ciaos on the roads for parents trying to get home to their children as there is no one to watch them. The traffic is already backed up as the traffic lights aren’t working. Just leave them where they are until the end of the school day as they are only returning home to a house without power too so will still be hot!!

Why can’t the kids use natural light, pencils, paper and books?!

  13. Teecha says:

Whomever was the maker of this decision must be fired immediately and without question.
This kind of nonsensical behaviour from the Education Department cannot be allowed to continue.

    • Illiterate says:

I prefer people who use whoever when it should be whomever over people who use whomever when it should be whoever.

      • Teecha says:

Not to worry, I don’t like you either.

I prefer people who are not ar$es over people who are ar$es. In a Venn diagram of people I prefer and people I do not prefer, you are not in the “prefer” bubble.
