Advice sought on investment options
For what is considered a major financial centre, I am having difficulty in finding reasonably priced advice for a small investor. Most companies only appear to want large sums of money, the banks just insult you with their interest rates. Where can one invest $50,000? It is my life savings and I don’t want high […]
How is stamp duty assessed on inherited property?
I am leaving my house to my children in my will. When I die, will they have to pay stamp duty on their inheritance? If so, how would government work out what that is?
‘Going Dutch’ on a date
I was married for 20+ years and recently divorced, so I have been out of the dating game for a while. I have been asked out to dinner by a man at work and I like him but I’m not sure how to handle the paying part. My friends are giving me different advice. Some […]
Unsure about roundabout right of way
When exiting the Butterfield roundabout (by AL Thompson’s) heading to Camana Bay, who has right of way to merge, if two cars are turning off at the same time? I understood it was always the right-hand lane which had priority, but my Canadian work colleague believed it was the inside lane who had priority.
Doesn’t see a need to hear about Anne Frank’s diary
Who selects the speakers and why do they focus mostly on violence? Are there guidelines for what is appropriate and what is not when it comes to children? Why mess up children’s minds with horrors of violence? Anne Frank’s diary had been exploited and overused. No offence, but reliving a tragedy is not beneficial for […]
Personal drones are privacy pests
I was sitting on my patio yesterday, drinking my coffee and enjoying the breeze when I heard a whirring noise. When I looked up there was a drone watching me. It flew over the house and then came back again and landed at a house in Canal Point. I heard that there is a rule […]
Vetting the Register of Electors
The Elections Office has been working commendably to encourage as many young persons as possible to register to vote. This registration drive seems to include Caymanians who are 17 years old and will turn 18 before Election Day. Young persons who are Caymanian “by entitlement” under the Immigration Law appear liable to automatically lose their […]
The right of an ex-convict to stand for election
Can an ex-convict run for political office in the Cayman Islands? Auntie’s answer: The elections questions continue in the run-up to May. Once more, I approached the Elections Office, an Ask Auntie Award winner, for help. The Cayman Islands Constitution sets out the qualifications and disqualifications for running for office but as the Elections Office official […]
Concerned that electoral roll contains addresses
Why does the Elections Office publish registered voters’ names and home address on its website? Surely this is an invasion of privacy. Is it law that they must do this? If not, can they just publish the names without the address? I feel sure this fact alone would deter some people from registering.
Qualification for a ‘state’ funeral
What are the criteria for someone in the Cayman Islands to be given a state funeral and who makes the decision? I have heard all sorts of frightening suggestions, such as all those ex-speakers and ministers with honourable before their name in perpetuity. Surely that can’t be so in such a small community?
