71% of voters polled before final hour

(CNS): At 5pm, with just one hour left for polling, more than 71% of the electorate had already voted across all three islands, pointing to a relatively good turnout for the Cayman Islands 2021 General Election.

North Side has continued to have the best turnout, with more than 83% of voters going to the polls before 5pm, with East End a close second, with just over 82% of voters casting their ballot. The lowest turnout was in Cayman Brac West and Little Cayman, where just 60% of voters exercised their democratic vote.

Speaking at around 4:30, Supervisor of Elections Wesley Howell said that everything had run smoothly with very few queues, but voters had until 6pm to make it within the 300 ft zone to still be polled.

He said the count was expected to start on time in all districts at 7pm. He anticipated that the result will be in, even in the larger constituencies such as Bodden Town East, before midnight as there will be simultaneous counts in the seven largest polling districts. He also pointed out that head-to-head races will make for quicker counts.

Howell said that the returning officers will not declare winners until the full official count is done, but noted that in those head-to-head races candidates may be able to deduce before a full count is completed that they have polled more than half of the available vote, even before all ballot boxes are counted.
