Woman sexually assaulted at knifepoint

| 13/08/2021

(CNS): A woman reported being sexually assaulted at knifepoint in Windsor Park, George Town, in the early hours of Wednesday morning after getting a ride home from a man she met in a bar. After her ordeal, which took place at a residence in Oak Mill Street, the woman managed to escape her attacker and raise the alarm with neighbours in the area. The woman told police that she met the man in a bar in Bodden Town and he had offered to take her home.

She was told that he would be dropping a friend home in East End first and the woman travelled with both men to East End, where the friend was dropped off. The man then drove to George Town and took the woman to Windsor Park, which was where the attack happened. The victim was able to get away from the man after the assault and sought help from residents in the area.

“The victim described the man as slim build, dark brown complexion and about 5ft 9in in height. The police take these types of incidents very seriously and we are encouraging anyone with information to call the George Town Police Station,” said Detective Superintendent Pete Lansdown, who is heading up the investigation.

The number to call is 949-4222 but anonymous tips can be provided directly to the
RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, or the RCIPS website.

The vehicle has passed at least one ANPR. It will have passed through sharp CCTV at countryside. There should be footage from the bar. This should be easy to begin investigating.

We females should look out for each other. When I walk out from a bar, if I see fellow females standing outside I always ask, “everyone ok for a ride?” Obviously, if they choose to leave with someone else, it’s their decision; but I did my part.

It’s absolutely INFURUATING that we can’t carry pepper spray/mace or a taser or anything for protection. If a few of these disgusting pigs got a face (and junk!) full of mace it might cure their predatory behavior!

The law really needs to be changed to allow non-lethal protection.

I suspect that the police are concerned that you will use those things against them. Their safety comes first.

      • Anonymous says:

It actually does, the world over. An incapacitated officer is no use to anyone.

Officer, other people, then property, in that order. That’s standard.

I completely agree. Nonlethal self-defence measures should be legal here. We could do something similar to what Miami-Dade did years ago — allow women to take a training course, gain certification and then give them capsicum spray. The number of the cannister could be recorded, and if used in the commission of a crime, then the recipient is liable, if they didn’t promptly report it stolen.

I think we should ALL have nonlethal self-defence measures. Start with women only. See how it goes. These assaults keep occurring, and the criminals have no fear of being caught. Stun or spray their asses, and see how they act.

In Miami-Dade, it was firearms training, but the principle is the same. Violent crimes against women plummeted, even though only a small percentage of women took the training. The PERCEPTION by the criminals was that most women were now armed.

Why don’t newspapers/sites headline all reports of rape along the lines of: “Again, a man raped a woman” The onus is on men and those who raise them to teach them not to rape. Nothing to do with the female who is raped.

Most of these guys were raised by and got their values from their single mother’s.

If we had Uber here (or an equivalent service) this would help. When someone is intoxicated they just can’t rely on the taxi service in Cayman and sometimes make poor decisions out of desperation.

    • Anonymous says:

Say it again so the taxi mafia is dismantled!

Until we have reliable and affordable taxi services than nothing will change on our roads. $45 from my house to our fave restaurant ONE WAY isn’t right. That’s a whole tank of gas for a ride to and from. It should be 15 each way max. Ridiculous.

The sun is setting on that entire industry. Not long from now, the cars will be driving and parking themselves, you can be seated in the backseat lounging with a cocktail and eating canapés, watching Netflix, scrolling your phone, or playing cards. You’ll be able to send your car home and come back to get you at the appointed time.

We just need ANY cashless taxi app. There are dozens of platforms. We need to overhaul Public Transport Unit and deliver service in-line with 2021 expectations. There are only 3.5 months until tourism reopens…will we be ready, or have anything to show for this hiatus infrastructure time we’ve squandered? Bike lanes?!? Jobs?!?

Victim blaming won’t result in less sexual assaults you all should be ashamed of yourselves. Suppose that was your sister or daughter or even your girl ?

  7. Annie says:

Agreed. No one has the right to infringe on another’s rights. Stop victim blaming!

Ladies please exercise better judgment. When you go out think about how you will get home safely.

…because men can’t help themselves and carry knives to commit serendipitous felonies?!? Let’s holster the victim blaming and find these two bar hounds, that clearly knew each other.

    • Anonymous says:

How about men don’t rape women???? Don’t you dare victim blame.

I’m no detective but on a hunch I would go to the house of the man dropped off in East End. Off chance he may have some info on the fella that drove all the way to EE to drop him off…But in fairness most people provide strangers free taxi service to EE in the middle of the night all the time…

13@8:21pm – it seems to be working out fine for that couple – 17 years! You disrespectful cretin!

I’m very liberal and a uk expat but would love to see the death sentence for these types of crimes

2.56pm I also met my significant other in a bar 27 yrs ago. Still go most weekends. Just choose the right bar & mate and cuss out the predators is my modus operandi.

This person being sought for interview in this allegation must be fairly easy to identify given the circumstances. This took place on Tuesday night/Weds morning. How is the person not yet named in the press, along with a photo?

    What car was he driving?

    Traffic CCTV?

To the defenders of Cayman, all that matters is that we aren’t as bad as other islands. Clearly having no clue as to how fast things can deteriorate! Sorry to hear this, and prior recent incidents.

This is disgusting and we need to have proper punishment for these types of crimes.

I would also like to take the opportunity to remind women that you should never take a ride from a strange man and definitely not a man that you meet in a bar.

  16. Anonymous says:

Note to all female barflies: Don’t take a ride with someone you don’t know.

    • Anonymous says:

How about note to all men: don’t rape the woman you offer to give a drive home to.

    • Anonymous says:

Victim Blaming. How about: Men, stop assaulting women you meet in bars.

    • Beaumont Zodecloun says:

With rare exceptions, don’t take a ride from nor give one to someone you don’t know.

Way back in the mid-Holocene period when I was young, things seemed much more gentle and fun-loving and free love and innocence and happy-go-lucky. … but they weren’t. Not really. There have always been human aberrations which prey on the intoxicated, or vulnerable or naive.

They are always out there, everywhere, the crude, criminal opportunists. I’m glad the victim survived her ordeal, and hope her mental state can be mended.

      Be aware. Be safe.

      • Anonymous says:

Mansplaining and gaslighting don’t lock up these predators.

        • Beaumont Zodecloun says:

If you feel gaslighted, perhaps you misunderstand what it means.

Human monsters exist everywhere. We need to be vigilant and have situational awareness. I am sorry this woman had to experience these creep(s) and hope they can be found, charged, tried and sentenced.

    • Anonymous says:

Note to all women no matter where you want to hang out… don’t get rides with men you don’t know. Men are predators.

    • Anonymous says:

Even people you know will try something. Someone knocked on my door asking for a glass of water. I had my back to them getting the water out of the fridge and the person tried to grab me. Luckily I was able to push him outside. The fridge was just inside of the door. This was a long time ago. I wouldn’t even open my door now in an instance like that. I’m surprised that they both didn’t try to rape her. I would never get in a car with two men that I don’t know.

  17. Anonymous says:

Ladies never meet a man in a bar or a club its the wrong place to look love or a relationship most men that be in a bar only want one night stands and some women who be in the clubs and bars only want the same as well!

    • Anonymous says:

That is an assuming statement. It did not say she was looking for love or a relationship. She was looking for a ride home. Why should the onus be on women to be on the look out to not be raped? How about men not rape women.

      • Anonymous says:

Men should not resort to rape and both men and women should be smart enough not take a ride with a stranger who could be capable of anything just call a friend or a taxi!

    • Anonymous says:

Who said she was interested in a relationship? She was just getting a ride.

    • Benjy says:

Now if that isn’t a gross generalization and sexually discriminating!

    • Anonymous says:

Safe to assume “at knife point” means no love connection or consent. She was also hostage as passenger in the car for about an hour out to East End and back, when she ought to have been the first drop. The RCIPS do not seem to know what questions to ask during witness statement taking, instead focusing on victim blaming, esp in cases involving male predation. This coward (and friend/accomplice) are still out there.
