Son denies trying to kill his mother
(CNS): Jeffrey William Powery (33) pleaded guilty on Friday to wounding with intent in connection with charges against him for an attack on his mother at her West Bay home. Powery has denied trying to kill her but has admitted a violent assault that left Jolene Powery (58) in a coma more than three months after the incident. The crown has said it will review the plea and consider whether it is appropriate to accept it rather than the more serious charge of attempted murder. Powery was remanded in custody until 5 April, when prosecutors will confirm if the basis of his admission is acceptable.
In another unrelated case, Waylon Timothy Rivers (20) has already pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his father last summer and he is now expected to be sentenced in June. Rivers who suffers from mental health problems, attacked his father, Timothy Buel Rivers (66), with a machete not far from the family’s North Side home and has been in custody since his arrest the day after his father’s body was found.
