Man extradited from US charged with teen’s death

(CNS): A former supervisor at a local boys home who was extradited from the United States appeared in court Friday charged with manslaughter and child cruelty in connection with the death of 14-year-old Risco Batten, who drowned in South Sound in November 2015. Larry Levers (46) is one of two men charged in the case who were supervising Batten and several other boys from the Bonaventure Boys Home during a fishing trip. Levers was remanded in custody until 22 March, when he is expected to appear in Grand Court alongside his co-accused, Michael Stewart (65).

Levers and Stewart are accused of failing to properly supervise Batten, who was a ward of the authorities at the time, when they took him and the other boys on the trip to a notoriously dangerous location.

According to the documents which were filed in a Florida court last year seeking Levers’ extradition, he had left Cayman for his native Jamaica sometime after being fired and then questioned by the police in the case. He then reportedly moved to the United States, from where he was successfully extradited on Thursday.
