Woman admits $23k immigration scam

(CNS): A local woman admitted stealing around $23,000 in an immigration con when she pleaded guilty Friday to nine counts of obtaining property by deception around five years ago. Judith Douglas admitted taking sums of $2,500 to $3,000 from nine different victims in connection with permanent residency applications. No details of the crime were revealed as Douglas admitted her part in the scam, which prosecutors say was conducted in partnership with two other women, one of whom is scheduled to go on trial next month.

The women were said to have perpetrated the crime between September 2009 and June 2010.

Having pleaded to the crime, Douglas was released on bail until her sentencing hearing scheduled for 12 October and the judge ordered a social enquiry report.
