Five days to go as amnesty attracts more guns

(CNS): With less than one week to go before the end of the current firearms amnesty, another two weapons and much more ammunition have been turned in. Police said that more than 460 rounds of ammunition and 11 weapons have now been handed in. So far, three handguns and eight rifles have been taken off the streets and the RCIPS offered its thanks to members of the public “who have so far chosen to help make the community safer”, and encouraged others to follow their example during the last five days of the amnesty.

Once the ‘no questions asked’ amnesty ends Saturday, there will be no more clemency for those who have guns without a licence. The police will revert back to prosecuting illegal possession, which upon conviction carries a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years to those who plead guilty and ten years for those convicted after trial.

For detailed information on how to surrender a firearm during the amnesty visit the RCIPS website here.

At least some people are responding to this request by RCIPS. It may not be a huge amount of weapons handed in but it’s that much less on the streets. We don’t need to see photos of weapons to believe that they have been handed in. Knowing this has been done is enough. RCIPS was never under any illusion that every unlicensed firearm would be produced. At least it’s going in the right direction. Unfortunately, no country in the world will be free of unlicensed firearms or crime and this island is not exclusive to this. Education from an early age and the way we bring up our children to learn right from wrong is paramount. You’ll always have the odd child that will mix with the wrong crowd and will be easily lead but we, as parents, need to drum this into our children from an early age. Poverty is no excuse for thefts and vandalism. There are certain parents out there that have no parenting skills whatsoever. They are babies having babies. Maybe Government should be thinking of educating these young parents in how to be parents. Maybe this will prevent some children from growing up to be career criminals. PLEASE fund the MASH team to enable an experienced person from the UK to lead the team forward. Why aren’t you doing this?????

The rifles are being turned in , but not those deadly hand guns . Looks like RCIPS has to come up with a different way to collect them . We can’t say that the Police didn’t give um a fair opportunity, one month . So now if they get 10 years hard labour they deserves every hour of it .
