Truck overturned at ORIA (from social media)

(CNS): The Cayman Islands Airports Authority (CIAA) has begun an investigation into how a Delta 737-900 aircraft from Atlanta managed to hit and knock over a stairs truck on the apron at Owen Roberts International Airport on Friday and damage the wing as the plane pulled up to park. Video circulating on social media taken by a passenger on the plane shows the immediate aftermath of the collision with the truck and several FADS employees coming to the scene.

According to the CIAA, no injuries were reported, and flight operations at the airport were impacted for around 20 minutes while the Cayman Islands Fire Service arrived. Delta arranged for a relief flight for passengers who were scheduled to depart on the flight. No other details have been released.

According to a press release, the CIAA is trying to find out what happened and prevent it from happening again. “The safety and security of our passengers is our top priority,” the release stated. “We are conducting a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances that led to this occurrence and collaborating closely with airport partners to prevent such incidents in the future.”

No insurance company insurers motor vehicles when used on air side. You may notice vehicles used air side generally dont have registration plates.

13 @ 8:27 pm – And you really believe that operators of airside vehicles have no insurance?? Ever heard of liability insurance, which ALL operators on Owen Roberts International Airport are required to have???

Unless it lapsed and the management failed to renew, which I find unlikely, FADS has liability insurance to cover this.

Can’t believe how stupidity is so prevalent!!

First hand report by an eye witness said the DL plane racing WAY too fast. Everyone here awfully quick to blame local worker.

Totally incompetent FAD’s employees. This had the potential for a true disaster. That said, the Delta Captain should have recognized the potential disaster and taken aggressive action to protect his passengers. Why didn’t the control tower spot the problem and immediately notify CIFS? Plenty of blame to go around. 🤔🤔🤔

A Bombardier Challenger 600 jet crashed on I-75 near Naples last Friday..

Does Cayman has protocols and procedures to handle this kind of emergencies? Who is being trained and how to handle this kind of emergencies? I

Do they have aircraft rescue and firefighters simulator as described in this article https://winknews.com/2022/12/08/firefighters-get-new-training-opportunity-in-charlotte-county/

If not, then it is really scary.

The video has clearly demonstrated the absence of a procedure(s) to handle these kind of incidents.

Appears no one in a position of authority and competence was there to timely evaluate the incident and make the appropriate decisions.

Luckily the incident, so close to a plane full of passengers, didn’t cause fire. 20 minutes for the Cayman Islands Fire Service to arrive was way too long. Taking into account the confusion of the airport staff and the long wait for CIFS it could have been a different story if the flipped vehicle caught fire.

About 10 airport workers were aimlessly circling the flipped vehicle again and again, disregarding their own safety.

Maybe Delta employees should concentrate on what their job is rather than cell phones, blogs and other outside interests. I flew them once since Covid out of Cayman and the lack of any type of service was appalling.

10-12 people and nobody knows what to do. Do they have protocols for such emergencies?

FADS got some explaining to do as they were handling the Delta flight.

This is between FADS and their client Delta Airlines to explain to CIAA how this occurred. After that any guilty parties should be fined and made to pay any penalties.

I guess the FADS person guiding the pilot was not paying attention to the surroundings. Likely another FADS person driving the truck doing the same.

Clearly, the elite FADS employees need to be trained on how to respond to such accidents, getting various little fire extinguishers and trying to upright the truck with their strong hands was the best they could do. CIAA please let us know when these employees are properly trained and also let us know the response time of the Airport Fire Service after they were called.

The plane always follows a bright yellow line to the parking position, and is being guided by a marshall. Clearly the stairs truck had been parked in an improper position. Normally the truck would be at a safe distance, then move to the plane once it has stopped. In this case, the truck was already too close. Fortunately, nothing too disastrous in this instance, but hopefully valuable lessons will be learned to avoid any repeats going forward.

  20. 1. Was the pilot FUI or what!
    2. They waited too long to disembark passengers
    3. Idiot workers starring versus calling 911!

      to Kisha Trezevant 12@1:22pm –

      1. On taxiing in or out, pilots are guided by the marshaller, for you that’s the man with the little red sticks in his hand doing semaphore movements;

      2. To the crew, now aware of what was happening on the ground, keeping the pax onboard for awhile was safer. Do you suggest disembarking 200 passengers into an active accident scene?? Brilliant!!

      3. Call 911?? Who probably would take 5 minutes getting details of the caller just to call the Fire Service, when FS was immediately called by CIAA Operations directly.

How you going to disembark 200 passengers when the stairs are laying sideways on the ground? “Everybody for themselves.. JUMP”
