Tanker rescues Cubans, brings them to Grand Cayman
(CNS): Another eleven Cubans joined the growing group of migrants who have arrived in Cayman this year after they were rescued Saturday evening by a motor tanker 170 nautical miles WNW of Grand Cayman. At around 5:00pm the tanker crew notified the Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG) that they had come across nine men and two women in a small craft and had taken the group on board.
Officials said that in keeping with international maritime laws and related obligations, the migrants were transferred from the tanker and brought to the port in George Town by the coastguard in coordination with Customs and Border Control. The Cubans are now in CBC custody as they go through the immigration process.

And what are we doing about the presumed large number of Illegal Jamaicans who have been coming to Cayman via drug canoes since the late 70’s ???
If they have no business in your back yard, you have all rights to question; Likewise, look up the company’s credibility before you hire people to work on your property.
You doing your part will pass the ball to the employers. In some cases you do not know if they are hiring their friends without valid immigration status and worker protection insurance.
I help my family in general labor as a Caymanian myself.
They do not have to pay me,
I do not need to sign paperwork stating I am Caymanian to my family or friends.
Furthermore, I have a responsibility to ensure of my safety when I work with dangerous tools.
Only when I make income from a approved employer in trade, or self-employed, then I can
afford things like dental
and health insurance.
I simply have no work income except helping funds.
Now when you have a business, self-employed or commercial; the employer is responsible for the workers immigration and workers protection insurance.
“I covering myself too, because
you have some people that will categories you as one of them unfortunately. I got to make income so I can live the Caymanian dream.”
How many can we accept? There has to be a limit – oh wait human rights.
Word has spread that Cayman is an easy touch, guaranteed to be here 8 months plus whilst people drag their feet and assess murderers, rapists, gunmen, thieves, robbers, for their human right to stay and wreck another country haha.
Get your finger out Cayman before its way too late. U late already
Elvis you probably need be our eyes in the eye man. 🙂
The authorities in Cuba need to do something about
their people leaving the country in bad vessels to begin with.
It is only so much Elvis could complete in a days work right?
The Cubans have a responsibiity to ensure the safety of their people and themselves before leaving the island on unfit vessels. I hope they start there.
What is your suggestions Elvis, on building a emergency provisions house?
There is a fair solution certainly.
No Weed, No Entry?
Why not carry them back to Cuba ?
Sailing the wrong direction? Duh!
170 miles WNW of Grand Cayman is approximately 125 miles east of Cozumel Mexico and the same distance (125 miles) south of the west end of Cuba. If they were picked up in the Indian or Pacific ocean we would allow the ships to drop them off here. Where was the ship registered, they should have been taken there as they were closer to Mexico and Cuba who obviously would not accept them. The fact is we were not the nearest port to where they were picked up but it is a known fact in shipping circles that no matter where these economic migrants are found just drop them off at Grand Cayman we will take them.
Under international law you cannot take them back to the place they are claiming asylum from, so that rules out Cuba. And the ships master is no
required to deliver them to the nearest place of safety, but with the least deviation from his intended course. So whether Cayman, Mexico or anywhere else is the required drop off point rather depends on his intended course. Taking them to somewhere other than the designated closest harbour would risk rejection and the master then having to further divert to find anther port. And diverting out of your way to come here would be economic madness in terms of the fuel bill, delivery schedule etc. rather than some grand conspiracy. Equally, if we are the closest safe harbour on to his projected course we have no option under international law but to accept them. So want to tell us what the destination port is for that vessel before you start the conspiracy theory that we are being used as a dumping ground?
Pure bunkum. You obviously don’t watch the news. Every week hundreds of Cubans are picked up by the US Coastguard off the Florida Keys and taken straight back to Havana Cuba.
No they are not. Taken to the US, their asylum claims are dealt with in short order, then deported.
Because that would be against international law that prohibits a vessel that picks up anyone claiming to be seeking asylum from returning them to the country they are fleeing from. You may as well say why pick them up at all.
Send every last one of them back now!!!
Nah, Mango Tree stock is getting stale.
