COVID hospitalisations increase as testing declines
(CNS): There were eleven COVID-positive patients in hospital on Wednesday, all but one of them vaccinated, according to the Public Health Department. While there has been a drop in the number of people reporting symptoms or positive home test results, it is apparent from anecdotal reports that the current infection rate is much higher than the official count.
As of Thursday, there were 920 reported active cases after 121 new cases were reported Tuesday and Wednesday, including six in the Sister Islands.
According to the most recent Public Health Spotlight weekly report, between 10 and 16 July there was a slight drop in reported cases/ But testing also continued its decline, as the number fell from 1,500 tests per week a month ago to just 870 last week.
The number of COVID-positive patients in hospital reached twelve this week, doubling the number last week. Two of them needed supplemental oxygen and three were in the Intensive Care Unit. Since March 2020, a total of 337 people with COVID have been admitted to hospital.
Of the nine new COVID inpatients, four were admitted to hospital because of severe symptoms of the disease caused by the coronavirus. Seven of the new patients had had at least two doses of the vaccine.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 cases worldwide have doubled in the past six weeks. The most prevalent variant is the highly contagious Omicron, particularly the BA.5 subvariant.
The weekly Spotlight report also noted that local health officials are seeing cases of Long Covid, where people who have been infected experience persistent symptoms at least three months post-infection.
“Common symptoms include fatigue, muscle pain and difficulty breathing as well as other effects including problems with memory and concentration (‘brain fog’) or joint pain,” health officials explained but did not indicate how many people in the Cayman Islands have Long Covid or how severe their symptoms are.
WHO estimates that 10%-20% of people who have had COVID-19 experience Long Covid. However, based on current data, there does not appear to be a correlation between the severity of COVID-19 symptoms and the risk of experiencing Long Covid.

In today’s news outaide the rock, another island country, Japan reports 196,494 new coronavirus cases, an increase of 194% from last week – NHK
Well, well, well…
At long damn last! Local health officials are finally acknowledging that Long Covid exists.
Well done, people! We held their feet to the fire and they are finally just beginning to come clean.
I recall the ridicule and derision my earliest comments on Long Covid received from dimbulb morons who resisted the idea that Long Covid exists. Now it is (somewhat) official here. However, the Spotlight report fails to acknowledge that cases of Long Covid exist HERE in the Cayman Islands. NOT good enough!
The spotlight section on Long Covid begins thusly:
“There are individuals who following a COVID-19 infection experience persistent symptoms or effects from their infection. Common symptoms include fatigue, muscle pain and difficulty breathing as well as others effects including problems with memory and concentration (‘brain fog’) or joint pain.”
We still cannot get the Panton-PACTless Clown car to admit its existence HERE in the Cayman Islands. In other words, “There are individuals in the Cayman Islands…” They just cannot bring themselves to do that. Why? Is it that they have no clue about Long Covid statistics here? They ignored Long Covid for so long that awareness was minimalised. Do they not have any records of how many suspected cases of Long Covid there are in these islands? How many hospitalised? What percentage of Covid patients experience Long Covid?
Do they now have a policy for addressing the issue of Long Covid? Seems not. That is negligent and horrifically responsible!
The Spotlight section on Long Covid closes by saying: “For those with Long Covid, holistic care is recommended, including rehabilitation.” (For those familiar with semantics this is a passive voice statement. Weak and passive. Wayne? Sabrina” You getting this?) Absent clear and concise government policy on tackling the issue of Long Covid, those weak, lame and insipid words ring very hollow indeed. Where is the “holistic” government policy on Long Covid? Responsible governments the world over have had policies in place for a long time, and have voted for substantial funding for Long Covid programmes, treatment, rehabilitation guidance and service delivery, and Long Covid awareness. Here? Still zilch. Just a careless government doing what they do best: paying half-baked lip service when decisive action is called for.
Yeah, Panton-PACTless, we are not letting you off the hook until you take some real responsibility and actually DO something! The people in the Cayman Islands now suffering from Long Covid, and those who will suffer, deserve better than just your empty words. Spewing hot air does not cut it when people’s health and well-being are at stake.
Every last one of those symptoms and many more are also common vaccine injury symptoms suffered by many right here in Cayman. So good job being on the ball about long covid, it’s time the medical profession and health ministry stop denying vaccine ijureies which they are well aware of yet remain totally silent.
Vaccine injuries? What a load of nonsense, stop believing everything you read on facebook
Based on how Covid has been handled, the next pandemic should give everyone pause.
U.S. reports 596 new monkeypox cases for a 3-day period, raising total to 3,487.
Waits for the pandemic denier to arrive to say this a small amount comapred to tbe overall population.
Just what specifically do you expect the government to do about Long Covid? Really, many illnesses have lingering effects/symptoms – not just COVID.
I for one had long Covid. I would estimate it took 4 or 5 months to be back at 100%. Yes, fatigue, loss of smell/taste, brain fog and the complete loss of my walking and jogging endurance. But, guess what? It is just lingering effects – everyone I know that had Long Covid eventually recovered. Just some people pop out quicker than others and some of us have power through it over the course of a longer time period. I mean, really, what would PACT do? What statistics would they keep and what benefit could they be used for? I don’t understand what your expectations are for the government in regards to Long Covid?
@9:01:
In response to your apparent need to be spoon fed, I shall certainly not be holding the spoon for you. I shall begin by directing you to dip your own spoon into the fact that few illnesses are as widespread and contagious as Covid. None are currently a pandemic.
Next, I shall direct you to dip your spoon and investigate what our Mother Country has been doing to address Long Covid. Compare and report as to how seriously they are taking the problem. Come back to us with info in how long ago the UK began to recognise and advise the public about Long Covid. What UK programmes are in place to address Long Covid? Compare this to the Pact-less response: has Pact-less even admitted to the general public any numbers of suspected cases being here? Perhaps after a hearty spoonful of the truth you can answer this: Is PACT-less clueless about how many suffer from Long Covid? Do they know how serious these cases are? Many people are of the opinion that Omicron is just a case of the sniffles. We know better. In the face of the public, PACT-less seems to brush off Long Covid as if it cannot become a very, very serious issue. Stonewalling. They know better.
The people you know may be among the lucky ones. I know people who have had a terrible time with Long Covid. One person I know has a family member who had seizures attributed to Long Covid. Another has a young adult family member unable to carry on with their usual activities. Yet another is on extended sick leave, unable to work. In the Ministry of Health and Wellness’ Covid SitRep for week 12, it reads: “Unfortunately, another COVID-19 related death has been registered this week, bringing the total number of deaths to 25. This death might be attributed to complications of long COVID-19”.
Next, I shall direct your spoon to the USA and what they have doing in regard to long Covid. Have they started any Long Covid programmes? From when did they start? How about government funding? Is the American leader directing his administration to address Long Covid?
What do they wish to accomplish with these Long Covid programmes?
Dr. Kristin Englund, founder and director of Cleveland Clinic’s post-COVID reCOVer Clinic, refers to long COVID as the “pandemic after the pandemic.” Put your spoon to good use and dip up some research as to the reasons why Dr. Englund made that statement and check on its context.
Then, I shall direct you to dip in your now well-used spoon and report on the latest research in regard to Long Covid impacts on the human brain.
I am confident that if you are of at least an average intellect, you should be able to answer the question as to what is the least we can reasonably expect PACTless to do in regard to Long Covid here in the Cayman Islands. Lastly, direct your spoon to dip up all the things that PACTless is doing to address the issue of Long Covid in the Cayman Islands. Spoon up how much in funding have they have allocated to Long Covid. Then come back and tell us all about what they are doing in regard to Long Covid.
Again, what do you wish government to do?
‘it is apparent from anecdotal reports that the current infection rate is much higher than the official count.’
Yeah but if we stop testing there are no cases
The Trump method!
Did you not see DJT taking credit for the vaccine?
Trump is just another politician.
The health insurance contracts need to exclude costs of covid treatment for the unvaccinated. No good reason to impose that cost burden on the sane.
Welcome back! A lot has changed since you’ve been gone ;o)
I’m just glad testing is gone. What a PIA that was before a trip with a 24 hr. Turnaround. It was so stressful and caused so much anxiety. Now, we can travel without that stress, without the anxiety or the cost and just wear our masks when in crowded locations.
“Two doses of the vaccine offers very limited protection if any”
Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla Jan 10th 2022.
I’m not too sure what else you need to hear or comprehend with the current state of affairs regarding these vaccines. Everyone deserves treatment, especially early treatment protocols which have now been proven effective. Please stop the hate, it’s been a long couple of years on that front.
I know the state of affairs. Those who are vaccinated are far less likely to need hospitalisation or die. Those who choose take the greater risks by not being vaccinated should not be a drain on the rest of us.
The only problem with your comment is that there is only ONE unvaccinated person in the hospital.
Silly comment. Majority are vaccinated, so of course less people in hospitals are unvaxed. Basic maths. You have way more chance of being hospitalized if you are not vaccinated.
You are some kind of special! Silly, If there is only one unvaxxed in the hospital, they are not the one putting strain on the healthcare system and taking up bed space. If the population was 100% vaxxed then take a wild guess who would be taking up the bed space. Basic math. 11 beds taken up in the hospital 10 out 11 are vaxxed. Why should insurance not cover unvaxxed persons?
Save your breath. The worst thing about these cognitive dissonance types is that they are never happy until you believe the same crap as them. It makes them feel safe.
Best left alone….if at all possible.
Limited protection against infection. The vaccine still protects against severe symptoms. Your post is misleading as it lacks context.
@1:52:
What a cherry-picked, truncated crock of putrid deceit you spew! Why did you not include the rest of what Albert Bourla said about the vaccine relative to the Omicron variant? You and your disingenuous, odious ilk count among the reasons people forsake protection, get sick and even die. I–on this forum intended for family consumption–cannot even begin to express my contempt for what you did here. You ask what else we need to hear? We need to hear the whole truth of what Borula said about the vax vs Omicron. THAT is what we need to hear, Bobo! Did you actually think you were going to get away with taking his words out of context? No, Bobo, not on my watch!
Here is what Bourla said about the vaccine relative to the Omicron variant. Spoken during during an interview with Yahoo Finance on January 10:
“And we know that the two doses of the vaccine offer very limited protection, if any. The three doses, with a booster, they offer reasonable protection against hospitalization and deaths. Against deaths, I think very good, and less protection against the infection.”
One of the prime intended outcomes of a vaccine is ultimately to prevent morbidity and death. Bourla rated the vaccine as “very good” at preventing deaths from Omicron and reasonably good at preventing hospitalisation.
His intention was to get people to get boosted and not to rely just on the two initial doses. He was not in any way denigrating the vaccine. He also indicated that his company was working on a vaccine specifically targeting Omicron.
I am glad you brought this up because it gives me the opportunity to urge my fellow Caymanians to protect themselves: Keep current with your Covid vaccinations. Get vaxed, get boosted according to schedule. Be vigilant, be cautious, be pro-active regarding your own health, and stay safe folks.
I guess you didn’t read the article or follow any global trends on who is getting repeatedly infected and in need of medical care. Either that or excellent trolling.
Yep, might as well, include obese, smokers, alcohol users and the list goes on. Another double digit IQ comment.
@N Sure
Dude . 10 people vaccinated. Do you understand what is meant by all vaccinated except 1?
Dont you think its the vaccinatef that needs advise? Encourage us vaccinated to wear a mask and practise social distance. Unvaccinated have fully receive the point of the vaccination.
Leave them alone and focus on you!!!
You do not understand basic statistics. The relative rates of vaccination by age and risk group means that anyone who says “X out Y cases are vaccinated” is an idiot. One needs to look at relative hospitalisation rates by age/risk group.
The Cayman numbers are too little to start coming up with probabilities.
No. You dont understand just how much i understand.
The majority of those in the hospital have been vaccinated, or do you not read the articles before posting nonsense?
Do you not read the vaccination rates? The unvaccinated are the majority in hospitals. 80 per cent of cayman is vaccinated. So if you have 11 in hospital, and 10 are vaccinated, that means Covid is impacting the unvaccinated way more than the vaccinated,
Thick skull and cataracts in the eyes.
And in this case, “way more” means less. But then again the definition of 5rd grade math has probably evolved over the past 2 years like many other definitions.
See my point above. You would have to be quite to miss why your comment shows how stupid you are.
Im sura you are dumba
Shall we also take out coverage for smokers, drinkers the obese, those that like to sunbath and get skin cancers and so on…….
Actually, the health & life insurance companies already do.
– Tick the ‘smoker’ box and your rate goes up, if you can get coverage.
– Tick the ‘obese’ box, same thing.
– Tick the ‘adventure sports’ box, same thing.
– Tick the ‘not vaccinated from common illnesses’ box, … ???
Not the same as excluding treatment at all.
Perhaps you failed your reading comprehension in school. The first line of the article points out that 10 of the 11 patients in hospital ARE VACCINATED.
Never mind that 10 of the 11 are vaccinated.
Stick to simple things. They are at your level.
Stick to your nonempathetic self, you low intelligence, biased idiot

Do doctors prescribe hospitalization preventing treatments that must be taken on Day 1? Or nothing has changed since 2020?
Yes they do if you are risk. Doesn’t need to be day 1 of symptoms, just within 5 days of symptoms.
Correct…. And “at risk” can mean different things to different doctors in the U.S. Here, it depends on certain social circumstances in addition to being what most doctors would consider “at risk.”
Number on ventilators = zero.
Deaths among vaccinated under 70s = zero.
Reasons to have covid restrictions now = zero.
Thank ypu, doctor. The pandemic is over!

Vaccine working like a charm.
Keep the mask mandate does prevent spreading. it’s s no Brainer we took masks away covid increases. yes we have to live with it but when you have 6 employees out in a restaurant with a staff of 11 there is a problem
There are plenty of studies that say mask mandates do not work because of the transmissibility of Omicron.
The virus is definitely able to pass through surgical masks, and cloth masks are known to be down right dangerous if not sanitised daily.
People in the Far East have routinely worn masks for decades, they are mandated in many countries, but has this stopped Covid?
The answer is no, it hasn’t, in fact NZ is going through a lethal rise in infections despite having some of the strictest mandates in the world and China is continuing to maintain a zero Covid policy, and failing miserably.
And look at the US where the most protected man on earth has contracted the virus and is only experiencing mild symptoms at the age of 79, and with a heart problem.
It all goes to prove that vaccines only protect the recipient from serious illness, it does not inoculate against infection, masks just don’t work and testing isn’t the great panacea that we are led to believe as infection and re-infection is as serious as a mild to medium cold.
Cayman has in the region of 65k inhabitants, with 11 unfortunate people in hospital. The percentages at work here are minute, almost imperceptible. So why is the government still ham strung by useless mandates and calls from those who on one hand believe god will provide and protect Caymanians, yet on the other hand want to hide behind the couch and lock the country down out of blind fear?
The vast majority, without serious existing medical issues and vaccinated, will be infected and cast it off. The country can no longer sustain the damage that mandates are causing to the tourism economy and we need to drop all mandates as soon as possible. Cruise ship passengers haven’t promoted the promised apocalypse the doom mongers predicted, and the U.K. hasn’t collapsed after dropping all mandates and learning to live with COVID.
The only mandate that is relevant would be the mandatory requirement for all visitors to hold Covid protection travel insurance that removes the burden of infection treatment away from the public healthcare system.
Being vaccinated does not stop transmissibility or infection, so why destroy tourism and the jobs and businesses that rely on it, on a myth?
Economy over health and safety guy enters the chat.
Imagine zombies have invaded the island. “We cant allow zombies to affect our tourism!”
That sounds like your business and problem, not ours.
No brainer aptly describes the current policies
How can anyone have any confidence in the health oficials after removing mandates ahead of festival season, with full knwoledge from other countries on the rapid spread and transmitability of this wave?
250 sarcasm right?

All but one of them vaccinated…and yet still
People think the vaccines are a good thing!
@1:47pm..You still don’t get it, do you?..The vaccine is not a cure..period. It is to lessen the severity of covid if you contract it.
Secondly, over 95 percent of the population is vaccinated…Since the vaccination is not a cure and covid is spreading like wildfire..doesn’t it make sense and stand to reason to you that the 95 percent would be the ones that would get it..The other 5% have already had it, having it again or laying somewhere rotting in a cemetery.
Please use some simple common sense..The vaccine are what has kept the majority of our people free of severe disease from the coronavirus. If the percentages
Lastly, the question you should be more concerned about is how many unvaccinated people have died from the disease versus those that were vaccinated.
Really?? If its to lessen severity, why are they ending up in hospital?
Amongst my group of unvaxxed friends (- ooh the shame and horror!) – only a few of us have even gotten covid – in 2 YEARS now. And when they did test positive, they had a mild flu for a couple days, maybe a headache – somehow didn’t end up “in the cemetary”. Meanwhile we are watching our vaxxed co-workers get covid 3 and 4 times in less than a year and each time with worse symptoms. So maybe its you that doesn’t get it!
Maybe you should read a bit…but then pretty sure you wont…so stay in your bubble.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S027869152200206X
Apparently you only read articles that support your world view. You should read some of the articles about long Covid and how it has ruined some lives. I personally know three people who have/had have long Covid (interestingly, all three are women between 40 and 60) – none were able to function normally. There are plenty of articles and studies about long Covid, but I doubt you want to read things outside of your arrogant bubble.
Newsflash: Vaccination doesn’t prevent long covid. Sorry to break it to you like this.
Newsflash – I never said it did. Reread the post, but this time slowly.
Complete opposite in my space. Most of the persons who have had covid more than once are unvaccinated. One has had covid twice in 6 months. But my vaccinated friends may get it and 3 to 5 days later they are recovered. Even friends who are well over 60 with underlying conditions.
wrong – the mRNA jabs are simply not effective against the most recent Omicron strains. They don’t reduce hospitalization or death risk anymore. That’s patently obvious and confirmed by multiple stats releases in Europe. Most recently, a batch of info came out of the Netherlands where the 2x vaccinated had a higher risk of death and hospitalization than unvaccinated – only with the most recent strains.
But that’s how it works. The virus has mutated enough to render something ineffective that used to work quite well.
And your last question is silly beyond belief. What is only important how the vaccine helps incrementally – now – not how many lives it saved it in the past when the world was dealing with a different strain.
What is saving us now is that the virus is less severe than the prior strains, otherwise you’d be seeing many more deaths.
Ah, another vax or else poster…you say they still don’t get it, I’d suggest you at least consider that perhaps you yourself may not still ‘get it’…seems to be difficult for folks that are vax-or-be-done-with-you brigade.
You assume that those who don’t take a vax are in trouble if they get the infection, when the truth is nearly nobody is in trouble at all unless they’re old/frail/obese/already ill and even then it’s no different a risk threshold than a bad flu season…there are no piles of unvaccinated people lying dead on the streets
You also conveniently forget that we were told for 18 Mo this to take the vax and you won’t get it or pass it on
And now we’re told the vaxs wane so significantly better hat we must boost them!! Based on the original formula which doesn’t do anything against later strains.
Stop assuming that you’re going to get really Sick from covid – you’re not, that is the statistic unless you’re part of the vulnerable group and even then it’s clear now the global reaction to covid is extremely overblown.
As to masks?! Go look at zero covid Australian and New Zealand disasters and see how they’re not worth much at all
Wash your hands, stop testing, ignore the news…you’d be amazed that there’s actually no end of days pandemic at all….but sure, keep taking vaccines that don’t stop you getting it any better than if you just had the virus itself, that thing called natural immunity is quite the invention
Isn’t is fantastic how a country with an appalling public education system that has to import highly educated workers into almost everything from the service industry to medicine, mysteriously has so many experts on everything including vaccines and viruses.
Perhaps if these keyboard quacks actually travelled, watched any news that isn’t self-serving US generated garbage, didn’t sit for hours ‘researching’ on the internet, and got on with their lives instead of hiding, they’d see that the rest of the world is coping quite well.
Infection and re infection is here to stay, have the vaccine or don’t have the vaccine, it’s a personal choice and personality protective measure that doesn’t stop the spread.
You have a simple choice, either get on with life or spend it living in fear. But either way, give us all a break from your backwoods medical advice and eternal whining.
The rest of the world is coping quite well, eh?
2 days ago: Japan reports more than 200,000 new coronavirus cases for the first time.
3 days ago: U.S. COVID reports
New cases: 155,216
States reporting:37/50
In hospital: 43,948 (+1,054)
In ICU: 4,477 (+64)
New deaths: 693
4 days ago: Number of Americans hospitalized with COVID-19 reaches 42,894, the highest since February
US population just over 330 million
4477 people represents about 0.0001% – almost imperceptable
Japan has 124 million – 200k is also a tiny number in comparison. How many are in hospital because of not with Covid including the ones in ICU may well have been there anyway
The acceptable numbers guy has enetered the chat.
Wash your hands, stop testing, ignore the news-so you’ll be clueless on important world events such as the resurgence of Covid globally and monkeypox infections increasing.
Just be oblivious to the world around you and believe in natual immunity from a constantly mutating virus.
Namaste!
Dude doesn’t understand mathematics.
If most of the population are now vaccinated, it stands to reason that most admissions will now be vaccinated. It’s not a magic bullet, my cognitively challenged friend. Old people who are vaccinated will still be at risk, just a lower risk.
Excuse and/or justification.
Infection with Covid is just not severe like it used to be. When was the last time anyone even died due to the infection? The data and my own experience with friends and family being infected all show the same thing. It’s not going to be severe and you’ll recover just fine.
People who want to be afraid, feel free to lock themselves in their closets wearing 2 N95’s and bathe in hand sanitizer. For the rest of us, we’re choosing to move on with life.
You should add however: man-covid is much worse than regular covid.
Exactly. No one is saying COVID isn’t real but so was the flu and other viruses. No one talks about early 2020 when we had a bunch of people on ventilators due to upper respiratory issues because no one knew about COVID then and people went about their business. If things weren’t reported as they are now I can guarantee we wouldn’t be having as many in the hospital (mental health is real). The mind is very powerful so when someone is constantly fed negative news etc. they will start believing the worse will happen to them. Think it’s time to let it rest and just let people know what they can do to stay healthy.
Thank you, Sigmund Fraud
What you selfish halfwits and dipshits dont get, is that what may be a “cold” to some, may be deadly for others.
4 admitted because of Covid. None ventilated. The rest is just mumbo jumbo.
Go visit them and read this in front of them and their loved ones
Sounds like your mind is mumbo jumbo and dumbo
health system not under any threat.
th big issue that is giing to cost more lives is the very low upptake in booster shots.
and i personally don’t blame people….we were mislead so many tuimes by government and it actually got us nowhere as people who got vaxxed were treated the same as the unvaxxed idiots.
there shuld be mandated 6 month booster shots for over 60’s or those with serious health issues.

Failed leadership. One can only assume that the current political leaders have resigned themselves to being one term politicians.
Let’s re-normalise the post-bubonic plague etiquette of: “if you are sick, stay home”.
Far too many adults (that are old enough to know better), are out and about, trying to prove they are recovered, coughing their way through activities outside their home.
It’s this pervasive post-COVID selfishness that keeps this tiresome pandemic going. Nothing else. A few months ago, the act of deliberately infecting others would have been $10k and up to a year in jail, go figure.
Except no one ever got fined that much or a year in jail. In fact how many people got jail time at all? Rules that aren’t enforced are just gestures.
Pour one out for Sklyar
The removal of mandates just in time for Caymas and Batabano chickens coming home to roost.
Covid cases are everywhere and sick people are still in thw workplaces, businesses, restuarants and bars, unmasked of course, not safely distancing, and not informing others of their illness.
A total failure to contain the virus and a preview of the next pandemics and climate change.
There is no way to contain the virus other than lockdowns. No one wants that. You can bring back mask mandates and that will make some marginal improvement to infection rates.
But most people don’t think that trade is worth it. That’s why nearly all countries have dropped mask mandates. 90% of the masks people wear don’t stop covid anyway. People are sick of pandemic theatre to make hypochondriacs feel better.
You could stop at “most people don’t think”
Put it on the flag!
This virus is so infective, the best we can hope is to slow the spread and not stop it. From a cost-benefit point of view, the economic hardship and regulations make the effort seem less and less worth it. Individuals need to assess their own personal risk and act accordingly. Completely eliminating Covid is an impossible task. It’s like trying to kick water uphill at this point…
Imagine how many more millions would have died if the world had used this logic during The Great Plague.
How stupid one must be to ignore history.
Lets have a complete lockdown!!!!!
Make face mask mandatory again today
LOL
why? did that work last time?
if you are in fear of this head cold virus….please isolate and protect yourself.
It’s only a head cold virus for the sensible and intelligent people that got vaxxed. For the rest it could be deadly, and wel, that’s a personal choice. Personally, I choose life – even with a head cold virus – if and when it comes…
